A well-run beer hall serving decent beer to thousands efficiently. But don't go upstairs to the Brewer's Table, at least not if you're hungry. The food is excellent but might as well be served in thimbles. I had to have a bowl of cereal when I got home!

Great place. Went on a Saturday, for lunch, before a evening Red Wings game versus the Wild in St. Paul. Place was fairly busy,we had a 20 minute wait, for seating for 2. That was alright though, we just used that time to get a few drafts and explore the building. Once were seated (Communal Tables, beer hall style), our server was excellent and very on the ball, despite her workload. Draft selection was great. We had Todd the Axe Man, Cynic Ale, Furious, & Cacao Bender. Food was also great. We tried the pheasant terrine, brisket sandwich, and the burger. All were incredibly good. Prices were decent too. We will definitely be back in the future. Also, the Wings won that night so it was a pretty good day.
Great atmosphere with a huge selection of unique brews. Pizza is a great compliment to the house brews especially the Walter White. Dean was an awesome bartender!
Fantastic beers in a big beer hall. Food is absolutely delicious, though a little pricey relative to food options you'll have at other taprooms. A 'can't miss' if you're making a point of visiting MN breweries.
This place is awesome, the food is really good - just wish the beer was better.
If you're looking for one of the darlings of the twin cities I think you've found it. The outdoor space features fire pits and corn hole (as we call it in the midwest). The indoor area is two levels. One has table service and the other does not (made to order, grab and sit pizza). The brussel sprouts are out of this world good - as is the walter white and wild mushroom pizza.
IMO, the beer is the worst part of this place (and the only reason for it's 4 stars). They sell a ton of it, so It's probably me to some degree but I have two main complaints. One - it's overly reliable on high IBU for "flavor" and not a refined recipe and process. This equates to just a really in your face hoppy beer (in a lot of their main stays) with no complexities and a not so subtle finish. Two - they are ALWAYS changing their taps. Right when you find a beer that is quite drinkable (usually a rotating tap), you'll come back the next week and it won't be available anymore. For me, this means that I'll have to sort through another 3-4 beers to find one that's decent, but by then I'm all buzzed up and have ordered another pizza and am having a blast because this place is totally awesome and you should just go there and make up your own mind about the beer. :)
Surly Brewing provides a delicious variety of beers and timely, professional responses to any questions - how refreshing! If you're looking for a great tour on a Saturday afternoon in the Twin Cities - this is THE place to be!
Only in the cities for a day but I had to stop in and check out the brewery. It was a Saturday and it was packed! We landed a spot at the bar and I figured it would take a while to grab a couple drinks. But the staff was on top of it. Almost immediately after bellying up to the bar we were given beer menus and waited on. Not only is the beer excellent, but the staff works their tails off. And what a super cool setup on the inside. Truly one of a kind!
I would give this zero stars if it was a possibility. If you are looking for a place to go that treats you disrespectfully, rude and only wants your money not your return business, than this is the place for you! Their attitude has gotten as big as their building. Check out the many other family owned breweries in the city that will not only appreciate your business but make your experience fun, memorable and worth returning to. This is not it.
Absolutely amazing experience! I was recommended to tour this facility by a friend. I enjoyed the variety of beers and menu selection! DeeAnna was an excellent tour guide! I recommend the tour before eating! The best part of the tour is the beer samples. The outdoor fire pits are awesome in cold weather! I will return!
Good beer and a good variety of them. It can often be very crowded, especially in the winter when the patio isn't as heavily used and the second service window isn't open. Speaking of the patio, such a cool space with yard games and firepits.
Great Beer and a great place to drink it! I love how Surly is always trying new things and is never boring beer. They have their mainstays like Furious and Bender, but come up with some really interesting beers seasonally. My personal favorite is Coffee Bender. The new restaurant is an awesome place to eat and have conventions there.
My favorite beer is Surly Furious and I have had beer from all over the country! The taproom is great too with great food and a great atmosphere! I definitely recommend this place!
Shitty experience. Beer was good but were there trying to join the tours. Failed twice even though we spent 3 hours waiting for tours. Need to be more tour reservation friendly if they want to win more out of town customers. Just visiting but definitely not worth trying to come here if you are limited in time
LOVE this place! The food and beer are the best!! Unique, delicious meals, and appetizers. Their staff are super cool and there is always an abundance of help. They have a very large eating area indoors & a beautiful outdoor area where you can eat, play games, and relax with a few brews or enjoy a huge meal. Fabulous atmosphere both inside and out. Great place for a date or a large group of friends.
Has gone downhill so far and so fast. Used to be one of my favorite places all year round for drinks and eats. Unfortunately, the food is just no good anymore and the people who work here are so incredibly rude, they're the worst. I gave it a few chances to see if it was a fluke but I just can't get over how awful my party and I have been treated there on multiple occasions! I even brought it up to a manager and he just kinda of nodded and walked away. Super professional. It's so bad I won't even go to Surly Field for a show which sucks because they have good shows! So sad that a new MN institution has turned to a such an awful place.
Huge outdoor seating area with games, small but effective food menu, on which everything is fantastic, and you can order a glass of any beer Surly has on their repertoire. Tons of parents with unruly children (why would you bring your kid to a brewery, anyway?) but that's not Surly's fault, and there's plenty of space to get away from the noisy offspring. This place is always packed, but the staff are very efficient and I have never had to wait longer than ten minutes to sit down, and it's usually only another ten after ordering to get my food. They run this place like a well-oiled machine (with delicious, alcoholic oil).
The facility is impressive and the beer and food is very good. I went last night with a large party (14) and it was a 2 hour wait. Two of us were celebrating birthdays. Even after that kind of wait, we still didn't get to sit together and the hostesses were very snippy and unapologetic. We would have left except we were starving with no other snacks available in the place.
I always make sure to stop by when I'm in the twin cities! The best combination of interesting but still really damn good beer out there, and the tap room is just a delight to hang out in!
As a Wisconsinite, it's tough to compare this to anything in Milwaukee. The expansive space is incredible. The beer is incredible. The food was surprisingly.... incredible. Any beer or food aficionado would be missing out by not coming to surly.
Always knew the beer was very good, came here with my family for the pizza that was reviewed by Barstool Sports. Best pizza I've had in a VERY long time, I will definitely be coming back for the beer and that fantastic tasting pie very soon!!!
Great place to come and enjoy some fantastic beers and good food as well. I ve been coming here for years and one thing that s always impressive is just how busy it is...all the time! It s a testament to the high quality beer (really impressive list something for everybody) and tasty food (the hog frites are the perfect accompaniment to a couple beers). It s a nice place to come with a big group (and they re always good about being able to split the bill), but because of so many groups it does get a bit loud. Service is friendly, but it can be hard to flag someone down when you want a refill. Still haven t tried the pizza upstairs, will try it out on my next visit!
2 restaurants inside is a bit confusing. We chose the restaurant on the first floor, which this review is based on (2nd floor is pizza). Cafeteria style seating. Avoid the chicken sandwich since it was the size of a single chicken tender and soggy spinach. Burger was good, however was not given any option of how you want it cooked, which you'd expect from nicer restaurants. Overall the food was not worth the high prices. Beer was good, naming scheme was very dark.
