I ve been skiing here for about 7 1/2 years and I ve had a great experience. They have a great progressive slopes for new skiers and snowboarders. Great terrain for park rats such as myself. The employees are super friendly and always have the ability to make me laugh. The food is awesome. (I recommend the funnel fries) Anyways, if you re looking to learn how to ski, sundown is a great option.

For a beginner with a 7 year old and a 10 year old our experience was great. The staff did a good job directing us and getting us set up. Our ski lesson instructor was great. We will come back again

This was my 11 year old sons first time skiing and we decided to visit Sundown. We arrived about an hour and 15 minutes after they opened. They were out of ski poles and helmets already. Overall though, my son had a ball and picked up skiing very quickly. So quickly that he found the 90 minute group lesson boring. We will most likely return but getting there early is key if your wanting all the equipment that comes with the rental.

Great Ski School for kiddos!!! Our 7 year old learned to ski in 2 hours and could ride the lift by the end of the day!

The food is beyond horrible and predictably expensive. GROSS!

The lift attendants could also be more attentive. They were pretty slow to react when my daughter and I were struggling to learn our approach to the lift. They should have seen us coming a mile away!

The instructors were great, the viewing and sitting area above the ski rental by the beginner hills was great to watch my kids and also to sit and eat together the food we brought for supper.

First time went this year ordered two sandwiches and they never got them after 45min after going to bar and complaining finally was helped and offered a refund or our food.
Then you closed on February 13 for the cold which was a crock. The weather wasn't even that bad. Drove all the way there. Then you opened Friday even though it was colder. bS go Chestnut! If your even thinking of going here don't waste your time or money!!!

For the Midwest, this is a great skiing option, especially for beginners. The prices are reasonable and it s a good time. If it s busy or you re a decent skier getting done the hill fast, be prepared to stand in line.

Sundown is a great place to ski. The lift operators are friendly. They do an amazing job with grooming. Sundown takes pride in making it the best skiing experience around. Can't wait for the next ski season at Sundown. Also, their fb page gives great snow reports and updates when they'll be closing due to inclement weather which is super convenient.

My wife and I went there this past weekend and she is a beginner, only her second time, and we had a lot of fun. We thought the staff was very helpful and polite and the runs were fun, although not kept up the best, but it was in the low 50's so slush was a given. We were not surprised with the length of runs since it is a ski hill in Iowa, and with that being said we will be back.

This is a great place to go outside of what u think of small hills and Denver. This is built on a river valley and offers a lot of different runs, terrain parks and chair lifts. The lines are very manageable and the kids always love going here

Prices are very reasonable and they have a lot of packages including season long rentals

The main rental building has a lot of space and it's easy to get your lift ticket, rentals and boots/helmets

The lodge - two levels which gives you plenty of room. The bar has a lot of different local and craft beers on tap as well as a cafeteria. There is always live music on Fridays which keeps the adults entertained while the kids spend their energy

Overall, it's awesome

Sundown is your typical Midwest ski "resort". When not too crowded, it is a pretty good place to ski. They have a healthy mix of easy to moderate runs. I would not call any of them overly difficult, especially if you have ever skied out west.

Prices are very reasonable. From the lift ticket, to rentals (they even rent ski pants and jackets for $5 each plus a deposit), to the food in the restaurant, it is all pretty reasonable for a ski "resort".

Stopped in and had an appetizer and watched the skier's. The view was awesome! We could see the river miles away, watched the eagles fly. Food was very good, the beer selection was good and reasonable. The staff was very attentive. It was a nice out of the way stop on our trip.

This was my first time skinig. It had a great bunny hill and I even graduated to more difficult hills by the end of the day. The instructors were friendly. I plan to come back next year!

It's small, the rental shop is new, the Lodge hasn't changed since I was a kid and it's in bad need of some updating but the people here are good and the skiing is fun and classicly Midwestern. While we prefer Chestnut Mtn, no season is complete without some trips to Sundown.

Not even close to one single amenity. Show up for two different events. Both were horrible. The cellphone service is sketchy, the parking was horrible, and the viewing area for the events was also bad.

I snowboard here every once in a while and never had a bad experience, the staff is really helpful and on a more down to earth level than chestnut but doesn't have as many jumps or as good jumps as chestnut. All that being said it really is an ok resort. If your afraid of snobby snowboarders go here this place doesn't have near as many of them

This is a great place to go skiing when you don't want the long drive out west. We drive up from Missouri which is only about 5 hours away. It is a great place to learn how to ski on their bunny slope and gradually move up from their little lift to their larger lifts. They have a good variation of slopes and trails, which makes for a fun day. They also have a nice area in lodge to have a picnic style lunch if you bring your own lunch.

My first time snowboarding and went with my husband and brother, and I absolutely loved the hills and ski lifts and mountain Lodge you can eat in while over looking hilly mountains getting the full effect.

If you live in the Midwest, you probably have a pretty crappy ski resort in your area. I live in St.Louis and our ski resort is one of the worst ski resorts. It is always slushy and watery, definitely not a good place to even practice skiing. Sundown mountain is so refreshing. It is well maintained, it has slopes for all levels to enjoy. The instructors here are amazing. I just love this place. This is the only reason we come to Iowa every winter!

Best resort you can goto in the area. Although, thats only my opinion. I have a few friends that say the machines don t produce the smoothest snow and the grooming usually isn t done well.

Let's be honest, when you go to this resort, don't expect to be waist-deep in powder. This is Iowa skiing! And for the great plains, this is a cozy little resort a short distance away from Iowa City. Rentals are quick and easy, but there can be lines when waiting to get your boots fitted to your skis. Keep in mind, they don't offer "demos", but the skis you get are good enough for a day on the slopes. Expect runs to be short, no longer than a minute or two. The lifts also take a while to get to the top of the hill. The snow made by Sundown was a bit icy the last time I went (during Febuary, it was a couple degrees above freezing) but you should expect this when the temperature is above 32. For lunch, I advise you bring your own food, as prices are steep. But the environment is nice. From the North Lodge, there is a great view from the balcony, and there is good service. Overall, a great place to ski for a day, and while it might not be up to par to resorts in the Rockies and other mountains, it's the best you'll get in Iowa.

Great skiing, especially for the kids! And they love night skiing under the lights. I am thoroughly impressed with their snow making ability. Will be open and great snow, even if the landscape is brown the whole way there. Kid friendly staff and facilities, my son got hurt and they took great care of him. Lift tickets and rentals add up but the equipment is good. Can bring your own food! This saves a bunch. I have noticed if you do purchase food it isn't too far out of line. (But the new coffee place could back down the prices a bit.) I hope to go back soon!

Sundown Mountain is such a fun place to ski! I last skied there two years ago with my dad, brother, uncle, and a family friend. The staff was quick at getting us ready to go. They had great food in the cafeteria, and hot, tasty food was something great to look forward to after skiing in the cold for a few hours. I highly recommend coming here because it has some great slopes and rates!

Well maintained, friendly staff, especially the tune up shop guys - our boards required multiple fixes and after the first time they didn't charge us which was very appreciated! The bartender in the lodge was also really friendly. Highly recommend!

Great hill as far as Iowa goes, nicely kept up with a reasonable variety of slopes. Staff were accommodating and friendly. Lodge space pretty limited. Overall, a great place to spend a day.

Not for advanced skiers. Very few runs and they are short. Good for beginners. The snowmaking is better than other places. But most of the time the snow is icy when temperature drops.

Food is not very good. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

Terrain park is decent.

Ian and Emma were very kind getting me set up at the front desk. A man said he would be praying for me, as it was my first time skiing in a few years, and then a worker named Jonathan said he'd take me down the hill. We went down a few times and he pushed me (not literally) to go down a blue hill, which I would never have attempted otherwise.

The chai lattes are also fantastic @MountainTop cafe.

A great day!

Great ski resort when you take into account you are in Iowa. The one bad this is the food prices. If you go make sure to bring your own food unless you want to pay $12 for a meal that will half fill you up.

Our group just had a great day at Sundown. Staff was very helpful. Our ski instructor was very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with our group. Food was good and the beer was cold. Thank you Sundown!!
