A really clean and tidy hotel, built in the 17th century it has great local history. Staff were very friendly, the prices are modest enough for the average budget. The food is outstanding. There's enough to do or not to do, it's worth the 10 minute drive. Definitely visit this hotel, it's worth it.

My wife and I stopped here for one night in October. The hotel staff were very friendlyand first impressions were good. The hotel is a lovely mix of old and new, being a converted cartridge house, with nice modern touches.
We ate in the Bar which was both reasonably priced and good quality food. They were able to cater for my gluten free needs. The vibe was very warm and cosy and there were plenty of locals and families to add to the atmosphere.
The hotel was well kept and tidy and only 20 minutes away from Carlisle, which has a good selection of shops.
Room was not double single wardrop no drawers to store anything had to live out of suitcase computer chair ( plastic)toilet full of dust check behind door beasts crawling in moved 2 left 1 as proof key did not work right in door staff and food 10 out of 10 a complete waste of money would never go back or promote this hotel
The most lovley little village pub. The family that run this place are wonderful. The food is lovely pub grub (the fish and chips are awesome), and the bedrooms are lovely, chic and rustic. Always a pleasure.
Lovely nostalgic old inn with lovely comfortable beds.. if your after a very quiet few days away then this is the perfect location to choose. If your a trekker and love history make this your destination.
Nice little place, visited for a 30th birthday party and was impressed that such a little place had such a good selection of beers on tap. Was not there long but really liked it.
Excellent food and good service by very pleasant and attentive staff. Room was a bit on the small side. Good off the beaten track location which is good for visiting the area.
Lovely old building with a relaxing atmosphere. Didn't stay here but had a delicious evening meal with family and was very impressed with how reasonable the bill was. Would definitely go again when in the area
Staff are amazingly friendly and the food is absolutely delicious. There are beautiful walks around this place, and the owners are lovely people to talk to. The food is all home made and well worth it. Excellent selection of craft beers as well.
Just back from a few days at the String of Horses in Faugh. Wonderful food, enormous portions, very friendly and helpful staff, well appointed room. I would highly recommend this hotel and hope to return in the future.
Lovely 2 night stay. Beautiful room, big comfy bed, Jacuzzi tub was perfect after we had been out walking. Food was great and large portions. Would definitely recommend
Beautiful location, amazing food and great staff who are very helpful. The room was lovely, had a very comfortable bed and it was very nicely decorated
Staff make you very welcome. Room very clean and meals are more than ample and reasonable cost. Coal fires throughout in public areas. Great to sit beside a real fire
What a lovely old school pub set in the heart of a beautiful little picturesque village. The staff are very warm and welcoming and the food is good hearty grub that s been lovingly made. There is a good selection of gin and the beers and cider went down a treat albeit a touch on the pricey side. The room we had was ok, a little cold when the heating was off but we did stay while there was snow falling! Overall a wonderful friendly inn and we would definitely love to return, cheers!
Excellent band b clean comfortable and very hospitable. Excellent customer service from the owner Colin excellent food from his wife who is the chef nice relaxing place.
I was only there for one night but I wish it had been longer. The room was clean and comfortable as well as a good size. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent both at breakfast and dinner.
Enjoyed a fabulous meal last night at the String of Horses Inn. The salmon topped with king prawns and a margarita sauce was perfect and my friends flat iron steak looked and was reported to taste incredible. Our Brockman gins were served with Fever Tree, garnished with blueberries and not a plastic straw in sight - all boxes ticked!
Our room was clean and the sheets white and crisp on a super comfy bed - had a great sleep.
Breakfast - poached eggs and bacon on an English muffin with a fresh homemade hollandaise sauce - I stopped short of licking the plate clean - which is quite something given that I don't like hollandaise sauce!
Had a fabulous night away, thank you to Colin, owner and host for such a warm welcome - we will definitely be back.
This was a real gem of a place and i'm very glad we booked a night here. A very well kept building and bar that is deceptive in size. Once inside, our family room was incredibly spacious, well furnished and very comfortable. We didn't hear any noise from the bar or other guests despite the place being full. The staff here were very attentive, helpful and welcoming and the breakfast was wonderful. I left here wishing for a longer stay and was very sorry to have only one night. Thanks guys!
Charming old Inn. We have stayed here twice as an overnight stop when driving up to Scotland from the South. It is ideal for this - just a few minutes from the M6 but in a lovely village and close to Hadrian's wall. Rooms, bar and restaurant were cosy and welcoming. Good traditional food.
What an absolutely gorgeous place to stay. The pub is absolutely lovely, real 'oldy worldy' place but just what I love. The bedroom that I had was absolutely spotless. Unfortunately it was just a place to bed down for the night, wished I could have made more of my stay. The breakfast in the morning was also delicious and I could not fault the place. If I ever end up going this far north again, I know where I will be staying.
If you want peace and quiet, in a lovely hotel away from it all, this is the place for you, great staff, great food, already booked to go back in the new year and can't wait
Had a great weekend at this beautiful Inn. Lovely large clean room with spacious en suite (with jacuzzi bath!). Very comfortable bed with crisp white bedding. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and the food was delicious and good value. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again.
Lovely little place, all rooms should have a bath though. Excellent breakfast and very clean standards throughout. Wasn't too keen on evening meals as i found rather bland tasting
Loved it, Jacuzzi bath was excellent, food in the pub was amazing, breakfast was lovely and fresh produce, staff were lovely. Stayed here once before and will be bringing friends and staying again thanks Colin and staff.
The meals here are amazing and really filling. The dishes are nice and big and the puddings are really nice. Also the service is exceptional and they serve you very quickly and efficiently.
A very warm & welcoming establishment. Colin the owner always has a smile on his face & always has time to talk to you if you need advice on things to do in the area.
Our double room was very spacious, warm & clean. The building is full of character & the bar area is very cosy with it's multiple log burners & open fires.
This is a perfect place to stay if you are looking for a bit of character & peace & quiet away from the busy hustle of daily city life.
Cosy , wee Inn , our bedroom was a bit dated but reasonably priced , the food was tasty and priced fairly , I did however think the bar prices were a touch expensive. Overall , a warm and friendly welcome , great staff and breakfast !!
Pleasant surprise, room renovated, great, although it was in England the theme was Paris, but only in the room the rest was England total, had even a Pub downstairs, family administration of which the boy hit the corner, ran to nod and then came back to defend the crossbar, , but incredible as it may seem the understanding was flawless. As the name says on the outside, you could even smell the manure from the horses, but the place was very nice, then you get used to it, we just smell it outside, run to the car, close the glass and go though . The way I said it looks like it was bad, but no, it was fantastic I really recommend it, really!
A very friendly little olde worlde hostelry providing comfortable clean accommodation and good quality freshly cooked food. The bar is well stocked. The locals are also friendly. This location whilst just outside of Carlisle is a fantastic base for touring south Scotland and the northern part of Cumbria. We would be happy to stay here again
Authentic place, clean rooms EXCELLENT food & service. Extremely helpful member of staff, very pleasant, helpful & friendly. Very suitable for the job! Highly recommend
Colin and Jill are lovely people and wonderful hosts. Jill's cooking is exceptional. Her Cumbria breakfast is enough to keep you going for the rest of the day but then the dinner menu is so enticing you just have to make room. We've stayed there a number of times and have always felt so welcome.
Lovely 2 night stay. Such a welcoming little getaway. Rooms are spacious and clean. Food is excellent. Service is excellent. Bar is traditional and quaint with open fires and cosy, friendly atmosphere. A little out the way but we liked that as was very peaceful, and still in easy distance to all the lakes have to offer. Will definitely be going back
Wonderful location just a few miles from Carlisle. We were able to drive to nearby Wetheral to catch the train into the centre. Food was excellent and our room was very comfortable with a huge bed. This Inn is highly recommended by my sister and me.
Beautiful looking hotel, and very traditional. Great sized rooms and beds, good facilities. Free WiFi was a huge bonus and it was so quiet - far enough from the beaten track as we heard no traffic noise or anything - bliss! Close to Carlisle city Center and Hadrians Wall - would definitely stay here again.
Comfortable and cosy traditional 1700's hotel, very friendly family run business, good food home cooked, comfortable and well equipped bedrooms, 3 miles from nearest main road as such a very peaceful environment, ideal location for exploring nearby Hadrian's wall and miles of good walking countryside. Just 10 miles from the city of Carlisle.
