My home , where I grew up.Eastern Long Island ..
East Patchogue to be exact .
The docks on the bay ( reminds me of a song , one of my favorites ) canals , , minutes away from any kind of beaches .ferries to Shelter Island , to Orient point and Connecticut .
Weather ? Let's say , Always set a rain date if you make plans .
Of course everyone has heard of the East and west Hamptons !
Cute country shoppers and streets .
U r only approx. 1 1/2 hours from the Big Apple .
I ALWAYS SAY
" EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE N.Y ONCE BEFORE THEY DIE ."

Long island, little spirit

Long island, little spirit
Of course, calling this island "Long Island" is obvious when sitting in front of a map and having to come up with a name. But if you're on the road, looking at people, entering the buildings, shopping in a shop, you wonder what this "long" could really stand for. No question that it is an island, this Long Island, but really long here is probably only the time in the traffic jam.

Oh mercy. I went to Long Island the worse time and by the not so very best means. It was just a few days after Christmas and snowing. I was accustomed to the weather in Brooklyn and had dressed according to what I knew would have worked in Brooklyn, but little did I know that Long Island seemed to be colder than Brooklyn by far. We ventured out to Farmingdale, Long Island to view my step mom's burial plot at the Pinelawn Cemetery. We took the Long Island Railroad Train and after being dropped off we had to take a 10 minute walk to the to Pine Lawn. The entrance of the cemetery is visible from the drop off point of the train. It was so cold (17 degrees, but it seemed WAY colder). Because we didn't drive, we had to walk to the plot. We did get a lift in to where the plot was, but we mingled by the plot for a while after getting out the vehicle and then we had to walk out back. By the time we got the the entrance and back to he train station, I was so cold I almost died, literally. I was in tears and just wanted the train to come immediately. The bad part was that the train only came to that area once each hour and I just had to find some warmth inside the office, so we turned back to get warmth, waited until the time was near for the train to come and then we left.

A few months after we went back in the spring to dine and it was much better. Long Island for what I saw those few two times seems save and a great place to chill as long as you are mobile.

Great place to be. Anywhere in General. Great access to the city. Astoria has the eats. Modest living. Roosevelt island is not to far. Great views of the city and river. Ferry access. Plenty of space. Feels like home. If you manage to get a space here... You are much more appreciated than living in New Jersey. I have so much love for L I C. I hope you enjoy it too. Best!!!

Long Island has some beautiful places. I was even considering moving to at one point. What I don't like about it is 1) they just love red light and stop sign camera's where they make sure to get you, 2) too many stop signs, even on places that hardly sees any traffic. 3) Driving into or out of the Island means spending a lot of time in Traffic. Long Island express way, or the Belt parkway are almost always congested

Great place to live and raise a family, great food and atmosphere in patchogue. Excellent winery's and farms to visit out east. Close to the city, but not too close. Great fishing and beach life. Long island has something to do for everyone.

Being from NJ I have a certain amount of disdain for Long Island or people from there. They always seemed to be moving down to our neighborhood and bringing their New York attitudes and materialism with them. It got so bad from New York people moving in that I eventually called it quits and left Jersey altogether.

Beautiful to live if you live in a decent area but it's super expensive. You need at least 6 figures per year to maintain. The south shore beaches & vineyards are amazing for people to visit.

Grew up here. Lived here most of my life. Too much drugs and crime. And way too expensive for no reason. People say it's a great place to live and that it's the best, but I think whoever writes that hasn't ever left, been or lived anywhere else. Very disconnected with NYC except for Queens. It is America's first suburb and has some history and some nice areas, that come with a cost. Not too many complete dream towns here, just one big spillover. Definitely has Ocean beaches which are beautiful like most ocean beaches, but people here act as if it's the only place with ocean beaches and bagels. People there seemed overly concerned with one another's business and like to stare at one another. Also a pretty violent place with a tough guy attitude. Some people even have a fake Staten Italy or Brooklyn accent and say things like "do you know who I am". People don't usually talk like that everywhere else. Filled with wanna be thugs and gangsters. People here are a little slow and come off with a know it all attitude. It is kinda like a bubble world. I have many memories here and still have family and friends here and there are a lot of nice people here. But I have kids and I would never raise them here. It's not because there aren't too many things to do here for kids, or the ridiculously high cost of living, but because the drugs, violence and peer pressure. We haven't lived on Long Island for over three years and every time we visit it looks worse and worse. I think it's the people. For people who say there is no where like Long Island, try visiting NYC, New Jersey, Pennsylvania or the Hudson Valley. Those places have everything Long Island has and more. And some of those places have much nicer people and scenery. The drive to the beach may be longer but you see Connecticut, PA, NY and NJ plates at Long Island beaches and at the Jersey Shore. The Jersey Shore is a little nicer than Long Island beaches but New Jersey is not much better than Long Island. Long Island could be fun but today it is not a good place to raise a family. If you have kids and live on Long Island, run as fast as you can before your kids get any older.
