Extremely shocked and disappointed with the whole experience. The mark up is completely ridiculous on some of these fabrics. Since buying I now know some of the wholesalers that they get these fabrics from and their prices are extortionate. Heaven forbid you actually pay these prices for these fabrics, Pray they will come correctly and unfaulty like mine and goodluck if you think you'll be getting a refund. That will be out of the question. Stay away.

This is a delightful shop with great staff. Buying online is fine but how lovely to be able to go into a bricks and mortar shop and stroke some fabric. The fabric swatches are a great idea and the owner lady with the red hair as mentioned by some is knowledgeable and very helpful and rather good fun. I bought some beautiful linen for a skirt recently and she was great - helping me with colour matching (which I m rubbish at- standing joke in my family) and even saving me some cash by saying I didn t need quite as much fabric as I thought. On this visit, I pretty much knew what I wanted but have visited before and the staff have quite happily let me browse and touch while I ve had a think and waited for inspiration. Everything I ve bought from here has been very good quality - no visit to Totnes is complete without popping in.
I've been shopping with Stone fabrics for over 10 years. They're my first port of call, a treasure trove of excellence, choice and expertise. While there are many other suppliers of fabrics online nowadays none (not even that huge German one!) can match the all round superb experience offered by Stone. Give them a try... for sure you will return as there is no match.
I buy online at Stone Fabrics and Bess and Jane are excellent at talking through your shopping experience. They are pleasant and helpful, your fabric is well packaged and presented well with washing instructions. All very professional, l have shopped with them for several years. The fabrics are excellent quality.
Puzzling. I have used Stone Fabrics several times and always found their wide range of material impressive and their service very helpful. I rang today to order some material online and happened to mention I have a very small upholstery job (its actually a 45 year old needlework box of sentimental value which needs recovering and re-lining). I was told they didn't sell upholstery material. I knew that as I've been in there enough times to be aware its a dress fabric shop but know that the current Drill Cotton covering (circa 1975) can be replaced by cotton I know they hold in stock. The sale was refused as it was reiterated they don't 'do' upholstery fabric. Perhaps if I was a Londoner my custom would have been accepted in Totnes.
If you are lucky to catch anyone BUT the owner lady, (I assume she is, short red hair) then this shop is fine and worth a visit as they ve got plenty of fabrics. IF, however, you do encounter this woman, run a mile! As other reviewers have noted, she is plain rude, unhelpful, condescending beyond belief. All she wants is to sell, without a sniff of customer service. I never leave reviews and have tried this shop several times, assuming I just caught her at a bad moment, but without wanting to be dramatic, I will not go back ever again based on her behaviour. Finally, don t bring your kids in the shop, because the rudeness happily extends to them, my son found out after politely asking if he could possible take home an empty cardboard fabric tube).

Unfortunately you have misjudged my visit and intentions as I was coming to buy 2 lots of fabric, as you know; I asked if you had them in stock. When learning that you didn t (in a somewhat off putting fashion) I shared that I was starting up a small business and trying to find out about wholesalers. I followed this by asking if you would possibly share the name of wholesalers you knew/use. I was met by your appalled reaction, telling me that you of course wouldn t share that secret . I thanked you, noting my surprise and left the shop (admittingly muttering my frustration on the on the way you spoke to me) . My son never asked for the tube, he inquired whether you still needed it and your response was enough for him not even daring to ask.
In short, as this conversation is a waste of time), with your reply you have more than confirmed my point and that of other reviewers speaking of the lack of customer service and rudeness by you.
Lovely shop. Very helpful staff. Not sure what I wanted when I went in but was able to drape and feel as many fabrics as I wanted with no pressure and thing too much trouble. Came away with two lots of fabric but could have bought far more such was the choice. Will certainly visit again when next on holiday in the area.
I live in London and made an order over the phone. Because of the difficulties currently facing the sorting offices, the delivery of my material was delayed. I contacted Stone Fabrics to let them know I hadn't received my parcel and they were very helpful and supportive. My material has now arrived, packed beautifully and with a kind note. My thanks to Bess and Jane. I will definitely use Stone Fabrics again.
