A visitor to Melbourne should not miss the State Library of Victoria.Apart fro a superb collection of books and collections of Victoran history the library s central reading room, recently renovated, is well with a look. Or you could just come in to read a current newspaper or magazine while surrounded by the many students and other visitors busy at their research.

Reopened after repairs, looking forward to a long time today finally arrived!

The inner environment is very large, the space is very wide, simple and bright.

Center observation deck, visual effects are very good, very powerful!

Personally, the only thing that is not enough is the collection of books in no other language...

Very nice library. It has millions of books catering to all kinds of readers. You are not allowed to carry the books but you can read.
I love kids section in particular. Kids can play, paint and participate in many events.

There Will be nice events organised through the year especially during christmas. The light show during 2019 christmas was fantastic.

I would have gladly rated the Victorian State Library five stars, but for the rude librarian I happened upon when enquiring about becoming a member of the library.
Never before have I been challenged with why I wish to join a library, and her attitude from the first to the final word of our interaction was hostile. With libraries focusing more and more on customer service and community, you'd think all librarians would be expected to display excellent customer service at all times.

Despite this, the older sections of the library are quite stunning, while the new sections are relatively pedestrian, and really not worth a second look. If visiting the library, just go and see the dome, because that is the only redeeming feature.

The best public library that I have ever been to! Very historical and an amazing selection of books. The reference section has a very extensive amount of resources that should help with almost any research. The life sized chess in the front of the library was very nice to see. There truely is something for everyone at this library.

State Library Victoria is the central library of the state of Victoria, Australia, located in Melbourne. It was established in 1854 as the Melbourne Public Library, making it Australia's oldest public library and one of the first free libraries in the world. The Library's vast collection includes over two million books and 350,000 photographs, manuscripts, maps and newspapers, with a special focus on material from Victoria, including the diaries of the city's founders.

What an awesome place. Many floors of galleries and the main room reading room is so beautiful. I can imagine it might be a little bit annoying for the people who try to study there because of all the visitors taking pictures and tripping around. The entrance is free of course and no membership required.

This is a gorgeous, old library with a lot of history. It has numerous areas to visit, such as Geneology, rare literature, ancestry and many more. There are places to study, get online or simply enjoy a good book. Head up to Level Four to visit the Dome galleries with a stunning, light filled view of the top level. Take the stairs to see some beautiful artwork along the way.

Tip: The State Library is one of the biggest Pokemon catching areas in Melbourne with a large number of Pokestops and spawning creatures.

There are paintings and historical exhibits, so if you have time, you may want to stop by. There was a chess table, and people who enjoyed playing chess while looking at books were like my father who enjoyed playing Japanese Go.

A beautiful building in the heart of Melbourne City, as you get off Melbourne Central Station, your eyes are drawn to the majestic building right opposite, and if it's a nice summery day, you'll see many people chilling outside on the grass or the steps! It has its own cafe, but it's also near many other places if you're looking for a bite to eat. Lots of spaces to study, but it can get quite busy on weekends, filled with many university students who have gotten there early to get the best seats! Free wifi is a plus, and free airconditioning on those blistering hot days!

This library is huge and very good in terms of space and the facilities they are providing in the heart of city.
One can easily went there after reaching Melbourne central. Its in front of Melbourne central.
This library not only provides books to read but also give lots of interesting facts regarding the history of the state.
One can easily chill outside also where lots of people spend quality time and there is big chess also in the outside gate and you can also play with it if you are interested in that.
Overall experience in and out was very good and will surely visit again, as it very near to my uni RMIT. And helps me a lot in terms of everything:- books, people and getting peaceful vibes.

Notable both as a great library and a great museum. Regularly hosts notable exhibitions and has some remarkable permanent exhibits, like Ned Kelly s armor and other transportation-era artifacts.

Wonderful place. We were there for an afternoon in one of the meeting rooms. Not the newest set up, but everything worked flawlessly. Great and super friendly staff, and very well catered.

Definitely recommended.

One of the most interesting libraries I've seen! This place is not your normal library! Not only has it got an unusual design but it has about 3 levels of a museum type set up where you can walk around each level and find out interesting facts about Australia, Melbourne and its surrounding areas, history and also art work too. It's both visually impressive and serves its primary purpose of being a good sized functional library.

Self proclaimed as one of the best around, and agreed... renovations ongoing in Dec 2018 but a great facility for researchers . I became a member in minutes and could access most online digital references via institutional access using my mobile phone!! Works only in the building though but what a great Privilege!!

Beautiful historical library in Melbourne CBD.
Victorian State Library
It is a beautiful library both inside and outside. In addition to its function as a library, paintings and exhibits that give a glimpse of Australian history are also on display. Above all, the reading room in the center is a masterpiece. Anyone can use it for free, but there is no rental of books. There is also a small stationery shop.

Beautiful library that I wish I could go to every day. Really the Reading Room is the highlight of anyone s visit so take your time walking around the floor and then going up to the various levels to see the exhibits and to take in the view. Staff is very friendly and helpful in explaining the history and resources within the library.

I would definitely recommend a stop here to see what a real library looks like! Enjoy!
