Innovative take on inexpensive diner fare. Open all night and really solid. Not a very savory location, but the atmosphere does not suffer from it.

It's your ordinary weird Austin joint so if people don't like it then you know why :)
The menu is extensive, the atmosohere is perfect and there was no issue taking our time to order -- no pressure to push the customer out. The food was good but I'm not sure we got exactly what we ordered. We ordered the migas and neither of ours seemed to have any tortilla chips which I think is part of the point of Migas. Anyway, I'll go again should I be passing by at 3 AM again.
My favorite little hole-in-the-wall dirty spoon diner. Huge probs at good prices. They general play good music too (it's the wait staff's choice) instead of the generic garbage they play at chain restaurants. Definitely an Austin icon.
Great food! Wonderful people. My granddaughter loves it too
Good food good place to stop in the middle of the night
After 30 years of eating drunken breakfast tacos, I finally went back sober for coffee and a taco. It was just as delicious sober as it was drunk. Enjoy the ambiance. It's one of the last few Austinesque places.
Star Seeds is the best. Great service and good, easy food.
I've been coming here for about 25 years. It was better the ownership then. You could smoke inside, there was a list of rules at the entrance (general guidelines mostly for not being a rude customer I.e. Don't sit at a dirty table, don't stare at the cooks). Now you can't even vape indoors. It's just kind of lost it's soul. But as far as a shell of what used to be it's not bad. Decent American fare.
I have been eating here since early 2000 s. I LOVED their tacos and burgers. Especially their Eye Opener breakfast platter.
I was, still am extremely disappointed with my last visit. I had not been back since they began making changes to the restaurant outside and apparently the inside with their cooks. It lacked gravy which caused it to be extremely dry. The worst part was the fake butter the biscuits had. Horrible after taste.
I am very sad my favorite late night diner has lost their unique flavor and quality in their entrees. I won t be going back for a longgggg time.
Kind and helpful staff. Great waitress with traditional Americana style cafe food.
A diner in the classic vein, Star Seeds doesn't pretend to be at the cutting edge of food trends, but delivers a solid experience across traditional American and TexMex breakfast options, as well as a few specialties of the house that span the two. If crowds, waits, and overly precious menus at other 24 hour Austin eateries are a turnoff, this is a fine alternative.
What a delishous breakfast I just had. OMG. Come here if not you get the chance. Last stop before heading back to the Rio Grande Valley.
Um? This place always seems like a good idea but then... Well, it's interesting people watching.
Cute little diner. They have vegan options and amazing fries!!
Don t know what the hype about this place is. I m assuming because it s 24 hours & not iHop or Denny s but tbh you d be better off going to one of those. Or just stick to Whataburger.
Very underwhelming, gummy chewy over done medium steak & no ingredients for what you order but they just bring it regardless instead of letting you know.
Service quite a lot to be desired.
Our party of 7 was told by the waitress after we gave her our order time to go be killed by the cooks
Listen if you don t like working after 12am go to a breakfast restaurant otherwise deal with it.
The food is good and the coffee is OK, but this place is always nice to spend time in. The staff and customers are all very friendly and it's often the best option for a late - night meal in central Austin.
Weekend delight, early Sunday morning on our way back to Houston. Quiet, comfortable, and excellent service. Coffee bold and fresh. Food was absolutely well prepared and great taste. Very quick service. Everyone including customers were so nice and friendly. Appreciated plastic shields between tables, also cleaning of surface areas, and masks required.
The place looks pretty cool inside. It seems like a good place to study. Food was decent but not incredible. The waitress was alright but for some reason a lot of the people were really annoying that night so she had a lot to deal with. She dealt with those people really well but service was sort of slow for only having a few people there (late at night).
It's the best slice of cherry pie you can get in Austin at 3am without having to drive all the way to Jim's. Breakfast all day and an Austin-weird crowd. My #1 late night food spot.
Love coming here, food is always great and so is the staff
So this place is under new management. That would make all Past reviews invalid. Now I've been coming here for 6 months now. I always get in the same order scrambled eggs with cheese cheese grits and bacon. They're the only place I can get decently cooked grits. The new management took that away. They took away a lot of other stuff. Let the record show this is the first review for the new Star Seed Cafe under a new name The Star Cafe. I'm pretty sure they going to make a whole new review page and I will transfer this to that page.
Good classic food. It's an little different then lucha a McDonalds but that's what makes it an austin staple
The best lil hole in the wall in Austin! Food is so good!
All night diner. Nothing fancy, but the vibe is great.
Great place. The chicken fried steak sandwich is my favorite.
Cool old-school diner in downtown Austin. Food was better than expected and really good for the price. Service was a little slow and it took forever to get seated on a Sunday morning, but once our order was placed the food was out in record time. Definitely would recommend for a breakfast or brunch any day of the week.
Great brunch spot, never really a wait but it's always poppin. Only place I know that sells $12 carafe of mimosas too
Excellent food, wonderful staff, this is a go-to place! Their 24 hour breakfast offerings are sure winners.
This is not the same place it makes me sad to see to see where it has gone we use to love star seeds it was my wifes and my favorite date night go to now "stars" for 1 they are not kid friendly no high chairs no kids meals where needless to say this will be our last time here
ITS SO SAD WE HAVE TO SAY GOOD BYE TO WHAT WE ONCE LOVED
Fantastic food and Nikita was an absolutely wonderful survey. I was in the service industry for 15 years and he was incredibly efficient with a decent amount of tables. Impressive.
Excellent atmosphere and food is always great. Try the Frito pie or bleu cheese bacon burger (gotta order off the menu?) It's a secret treasure.
Laid back place.. Very small and cheap place to hangout
Service is notably excellent. Attentive and friendly. The quality of the food is what you want from a diner, properly cooked and served hot. Coffee is light, smooth, highly drinkable, and frequently topped off. But the service! Wow. Highly recommended.
I don't understand why my friend's like this place. It will do, cool vibe I guess but food is lackluster
the after hours breakfast. or the mid afternoon mimosa and food.
An Aston staple that hasnt totally been able to resist change, but it still feels old Austin. Drew Carey was eating there like 13 years ago by himself at 2am...my rowdy crowd chased him away. I think he was trippin
... good food, great value, outstanding service and hospitality. I've only been here once, but I'll be coming back.
typed this into the GPS and saw a bunch of not-so-hot reviews. I was going there to meet some musician friends... They chose this spot. Anyway the waitress was super awesome and smoking hot. Can I say that? Food was fantastic as was the coffee. I got the house salad (hey I already ate beforehand). It was huge and delicious. Never felt so good after going out to eat. Now, the guys got pancakes, biscuits and gravy and sandwiches which were all fantastic. But certainly didn't result in them feeling half as awesome as I do right now. Prices are excellent too. They surely seem even more excellent at 2 a.m.
Some people bemoan the change in ownership. The menu hasn't changed though and it's still pretty good. Classic late night greasy spoon but with a bit of Austin style.
Just a normal little diner. But a damn good little diner.
This place is great. Quirky Austin vibe and great modern diner fare. Open late, after show great. The coffee also always rocks. That's important at 3am and 3pm.
Anyhow, went in earlier this afternoon and saw a new face. Jason was handling the whole floor and was easily the best service I've had there. That was nice, it was just a quick/casual meal, but that made an awesome difference.
Thanks Jason, you helped make our afternoon.
Very quick service. Reasonable prices. The french toast and fruit was really good and was $6.95 without tax or tip. Parking available, but not too much of it. We ll probably be back.
I'm not sure why this place is rated so highly? Sure, the prices are low, but you pay for the poor quality of the food. There were dirty napkins scattered on the floor and both mine and my partner's chairs were broken. Even a leg on our table was broken. I added a star just because our server was friendly, even though she forgot a few of the things we ordered.
The food here isn't anything special. It's a greasy spoon, you're not going here for a culinary experience. I go here for the hours and the wait staff. Try the pie, it sucks.
Classic dinner down to the tee with an Austin flair! Had a great experience, food came out fast and was tasty, the music was amazing, and the server was super nice and funny. Good prices as well! Definitely coming back for that perfect late night or breakfast spot!
It was ok until I was about half way through my meal. The maintenance guy started tearing down the wall from the outside. Debris was thrown all over me and my food. I quickly jumped up and let the waitress know. I was covered in a white powder and my food was ruined. They did nothing to compensate for this. No new food. No partial charge. Nothing! I do not recommend eating here!
I love this diner. It is so cozy, affordable, and friendly. If you are looking for a chill, laid back place to eat and hang out, this is it.
Our waitor didn t put our order in and told us 45 min later he forgot and it would be out in 35 min, when the order came out none of our orders were right. Food was not good, service was bad.
Great breakfast food. Friendly staff. Interesting decor
I love this place. Casual, funky atmosphere and exquisite diner fare.
I suggest the A-Baum or Croque Madam.
Absolutely amazing food and service.
My favorite date place or after a show or bar.
Close enough to downtown.
Nice place for a late bite after the clubs. Good food. Great service!
I absolutely Loved this place for years. And still do. But the guys that bought the place (owners of Esther folly) have taken down all the local artist artwork and will no longer be supporting local artist. Instead there is just one terrible looking print of the painting "night hawks" by Edward Hopper.
Bring back the local artwork. Support your local artist like an Austinite should. Bring back the classic star seeds. And bring bag the chocolate cake. Then You get your stars back. (Previous gave you five stars)
Excellent breakfast and hungover food. Interesting atmosphere. Look for Zaphod Beeblebrox.
Chicken Fried steak was not very good, service was good.
Got rid of all the employees got rid of everything on the walls got rid of favorite menu item ... good jod new owners
Delicious! And the Brunch was amazing! 2 dollar mimosas!!
It s like my secret spot. Good location, quiet. Foods pretty good too, especially the Spanish Omelette.
A must visit if in Austin great food...don't forget a black sharpie
My girlfriend and I had some great biscuits, sausage and gravy at 1 in the morning. Kind and quick service, we will definitely be back and the waiter split a hundred no problem and without giving us a dirty look too haha. Just the kind of cozy environment and filling late night food for Austinites who aren't uptight!
This place is hard to find, attended mostly by the UT crowd, but has great food, wow pancakes and fair pricing. Parking is a hassle and service is slow, but all worth it (eat, sit and watch the customers).
Very cool place to eat! The waitress was down to earth and very nice! Our baby boy (and me) LOVED the rainbow windows
One of atx's hidden gems. Food is good and fast. Staff is friendly. The parking situation sucks but that's life. Go get an eye opener at 2 am and you will not be disappointed.
Best hidden gem. Rarely crowded always open. Good people good food good times.
