An architecturally stunning country church; if you visit, be sure to glance upwards at the painted ceiling and walls. It's also one of the best maintained churches I have seen in eastern Ontario. The preaching here is especially conservative in tone and substance (more so than at most Catholic churches). Regardless, the interior is worth a visit--20 minutes before 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass begins is a good opportunity.

About St. Peter Celestine Catholic Church

St. Peter Celestine Catholic Church: A Historical and Spiritual Landmark

St. Peter Celestine Catholic Church is a historical and spiritual landmark located in the heart of Ontario, Canada. The church is known for its fine building and superb original interior decor that has remained intact since 1892, making it one of only three Canadian churches to retain Classic Italianate decoration.

The church was named after St. Peter Celestine, who was a hermit before becoming Pope in 1294. He is known for his humility and simplicity, which are values that the church strives to uphold.

The History of St. Peter Celestine Catholic Church

The history of St. Peter Celestine Catholic Church dates back to the late 1800s when a group of Italian immigrants settled in the area and began attending mass at a local schoolhouse. In 1891, they decided to build their own church, which would serve as a place of worship for generations to come.

Construction on the church began in 1892 and was completed later that year. The building's design was inspired by classic Italianate architecture with ornate details such as arched windows, decorative cornices, and intricate stonework.

Over time, the church became an important part of the community's social fabric as well as its spiritual center. It hosted weddings, funerals, baptisms, confirmations - all significant events in people's lives.

In recent years there have been renovations made to ensure that this beautiful piece of history remains standing strong for many more years to come.
