No frills sketchy hotel that takes cash only. The mattresses predate flatscreen TVs, the water pressure is nonexistent. Still, if you need a hotel room at 3am, and sometimes you do, it's a solid bet.

This is the first ever hotel I've been that doesn't accept cards which is ridiculous considering it's the 21st century! When we first arrived the receptionist called someone to spray some air freshener in our room, which didn't fill us with confidence. You'll have to walk up some steep stairs to the rooms which was fine for us but not so good for people who are not very mobile or have heavy luggages. The rooms were small, very basic and looked like they haven't renovated it since the 1970s. The room also smelled a bit musty and I saw some ants crawling on the floor which was a bit gross.
The service was ok, we had fresh towels every day and they made our bed everyday. Toiletries weren't great and the toilet paper were the thinnest I've ever seen!
The only good thing about this hotel is that it's in a great location, and is very close to our favourite Japanese restaurant Kenka. That's what the one star is for.

I have been coming to this same hotel for a few years now. The first time was back in 2012 with my SO and we had a great experience. I recently came back this past month (08/2014) and it was exactly the same! I had a full-sized bed that I shared with my best friend, an extremely clean room with the cleaning staff in their everyday, and the second to best part is the pricing. Now, the best part of this spot is LOCATION, LOCATION. You get a real feel in the East Village, Ray's Pizza and all the fun little spots. I would recommend going to the Flea Market that is held over by 28th Street on Sundays if you have the opportunity.

St Marks Hotel is a fun fine establishment... Friends from LA are in town this week for business and chose it due to its ideal location: the East Village. Its the total opposite of the Jane Hotel which hides deep in the West Village's quiet calm... Both hotels are in the same price range but the Jane is without quick access to trains. St Marks has it all; conveniently located near Union Square, Alphabet City, So-Noho & Greenwhich Village. It depends on one's mood: if yer easily distracted and need a slower based R&R streamlined stay in NYC head to the Jane. If yer in town and wanna feel like a New Yorker, dont fret or be shy: everything is everywhere right on ones finger tips in Saint Marks.

Ideally located near two metro lines. Rooms maybe somewhat dated, but the bathroom was recently renovated again. Good bed: mattress was not too soft or hard. All in all, more than enough for what you need

Friendly welcome and staff.
The place is old-fashioned and the sound insulation of the window needs to be reviewed.
Otherwise for a short stay without spending too much money the place is very good and especially very well placed!
1 minute from the metro and plenty of restaurants to eat at your doorstep including a great Irish pub

Perfectly located in the East Village on St. Marks between 3rd and 2nd Ave. Good memories of staying here since 1991. Stayed in the nicest room I ever had on a recent trip in June. Close to cool stores like Trash & Vaudeville on 7th St.. Plenty of restaurant options like Veselka, the Odessa, and Little Frankie's. Cash only.

Rooms are small and no fancy decorations, that's true. But you will get an excellent location (3 min walk to the metro), a clean space to rest with free WiFi and a nice place for breakfast around the corner. Also the hotel staff was really kind and willing to help for anything you need. Excellent choice for a low cost trip, highly recommended.

I'll start this off by saying that for the PRICE and LOCATION it IS a good deal. The room itself is also a DECENT room. good for what you're expecting, a quick crash pad. Now, the issue with the property is the staff. All, but 1. 1 single man is the literal only reason anyone should stay at this property. Do not expect hospitality from anyone for you will be sadly mistaken.

I had already been there in summertime when the AC mostly covered the noisy 3rd Ave. Not this time: inebriated hoards partied all over banging on buddies' doors by 4AM - making painfully clear how inexistent the sound insulation - and sound-tolerant management - is, while the heating elements only featured two positions: ice-cold or oven-hot. By the 3rd day we considered a room exchange and were presented with an unique option with great view to a wall. In the moving process I had forgotten the phone charger plugged in the first room; when I returned a couple of hours latter to claim it the room was done and unoccupied with my charger gone. Nobody but the hotel's authorized people had access yet they didn't blink a lash and the charger remained unfound.

I will never stay at this hotel again. old smelly bedsheets, dirty bathroom where l could see small insects on the floor.small room which looked like the floor hasn't been cleaned and vaccumed and smelled really bad as soon as we entered the room.no elevator and narrow stairs .you have to pay cash only!

At first it didn't make a good impression. Reception on the first floor without a hall. No elevator. Room furnishing loooong essential: double bed leaning against the wall, no bedside tables, no desk, no wardrobe only a small piece of furniture 20 cm deep with 2 shelves and 4 hangers and 1 chair. But clean, attractive price to be NY and very strategic position on the corner with Astor Place very convenient for metro and surface lines. Below the hotel is a Greek restaurant where we ate very little and spent many other places in the street and nearby. Nice neighborhood. If I went back to NY I would definitely stay there again.

No hot water, no lift, disengaged staff, terribly dated rooms and infrastructure. Like time travelling to a bad time warped memory of the 1970s. There are MANY much better options to choose from in NYC. Absolutely not recommended

The room was tiny and smelled weird. No elevator and very narrow stairs. Not good at all for senior citizens. Everything outdated. A/C did not work properly at all and it was extremely hot and humid in the tiny room. Location is EXCELLENT ! If you just want a bed to crash on after a whole day in the city, this is probably the place for you.

I mean if you see this place on any by the hr place this is NOT by the hour anymore.they have a standard rate and you can check out when ever so unlike spending 150 for 4 hrs somewhere you can pay 120 for the whole day and leave whenever u want.you get what you pay for, the rooms are decent and they give you alot of towels. The bed is ok, sheets are decently clean (no pillow cases though) shower is powerful as hell and one little twist will turn your blazing hot shower to a blizzard. But it ain't bad...

I have never been here before, but for some reason Google's algorithm thinks I have and keeps asking me to rate. I think it's because the liquor store I go to is next door. I digress, I give this place 5 stars bc it looks like the kind of place that charges by the hour and has people sleeping on the stairs. I can't confirm that, but it's still in business and I give them a lot of credit for that. This is a tough market.

St. Marks Hotel is a slightly refurbished pay-by-the-hour hooker hotel. It's still just as dingy. Some of the windows face very loud streets, particularly Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The TVs get ten blurry channels. So why four stars? The location is absurdly amazing, and it's really the only hotel in all of the East Village. In most seasons, it's far cheaper than other hotels, always ranging from $120-150. And you can almost always get a room.

Check the reviews before you go! All of the good reviews are all from months ago. I stayed at that hotel for two days and it was horrible experice!

During my stay. I was told that I was not allowed visitors. My cousin had to leave. What Hotel has a rule like that? I will never stay there again. Embarrassing, and Rude. Never again, will I stay there. Zero stars if I could, for that reason alone.

A put .. antro. Of those in which they charge you per day and do not even give you the time. A garbage, it's worth more to be a bit far. Do not be fooled from the outside it seems something that is not even a joke.

Not to mention that there are thousands of stairs of the smallest and most dangerous

So I was nervous going in. Had never stayed here before and after reading lots of positive reviews for price and location we decided to take a chance. It is absolutely dated and old so if you want new then go somewhere else. The room (double with one bed) was as small as I have ever seen, hot water in shower was a roll of the dice. AC unit is loud. Tv sucks. Bed and pillows not that comfortable. NO BED BUGS!
We would absolutely stay here again for the location and price, nothing else.

A small hotel with stairs leading up to the rooms. People say the rooms are small however, every New York hotel has small rooms. If you want to sleep in Manhattan for $ 100 a night, this is the best place you'll find. The hotel is reasonable and very basic however its location is excellent and it is clean. There is a small pizzeria downstairs tasting and in front of the hotel there is a place of cool desserts. Please note that payment is made in cash only. Bottom line, a reasonable and clean place in Manhattan at the price of Brooklyn.

DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL. I walked in and was told I need to pay cash and was fooled into signing a sheet that said no refunds . What hotel makes you pay cash? I walked into the room and it was TERRIBLE. There s only window unit air, and the furniture is old. The bed was HARD!! And the linens looked aged and dirty. After brushing my teeth and assessing the room I decided that I did not feel safe or comfortable in this room. I went downstairs and told the front desk man that I d like a refund because this room was not what I expected and I do not feel safe. He rejected my refund due to me using the room . I did NOT sleep or get into the bed. I was unable to get a refund and because I paid in cash, there is nothing I can do. Please do not get tricked into this like I did. I will be calling the NYC business bureau about this establishment.

This is a great hotel for young couples. It's located in a very accessible area with many places to walk around and see. There are a lot of bars, restaurants and it's close to the metro. The staff was really friendly and nice. The price was just for a New York hotel in a great location. The room and bathroom were small, however you don't spend so much time in the hotel so it's worth the price.

This place is awful. After we saw our room, in which there was only a window unit that seemed to be blowing hot air, we got our money back. We went to a bar nearby to call and book another room somewhere with working a/c and a person working there said they wouldn't stay there for free.

Checked in to find out that it was cash only and payment was upfront, neither of which we read or were told about prior to arrival. Room we were assigned had a leaking heater which meant that it had to be off overnight (on the coldest night of the winter 1 degree F, -18 degree C). The next morning we changed rooms and that room was sufficient, but overall the experience was fairly poor, the hotel smelled strange and the walls were paper thin. Cheap accommodation, but probably worth spending $30 a night extra somewhere a little nicer.

I state that we are in New York and the prices in central areas are high, but alas also the minimum claims of a resident if you pay 140. Poor value for money. The hotel does not have a lift and has rooms on multiple levels, so you have to drag your suitcase up a narrow staircase. The furniture of the hotel is essential and this would not be a problem if it were functional, although the wardrobe that you can see in the photo is jeopardized. The thing that makes me express this vote however was the air conditioner: very old, very noisy and impossible to switch off. It made noise even with the switch set to off. On the other hand, the location is just a few meters from the subway in a neighborhood full of life and clubs.

The hotel is not bad, there are staff who speak Spanish and are very friendly, and at the reception there are little cards with discounts for many places, but the rooms are very small, although you really know the city so it does not really matter much, in a few words if I recommend it

This hotel does not have elevator and it is really old! Instead TV, rooms should have a fridge which in this hot weather, guests could have cold water in their rooms. Hotel provides free wifi so, there is no need for TV since everyone has cellphone. There is a 24/7 bagel/pizza shop exactly below the hotel. Customers making too much noise and those rooms above the shop, will not have a sleep during the night. The hotel s location is good and accessible to metro.
The shower has problem, you will either freezing or burning! The rooms need improvement.

Horrible service. No air flow inside the room. AC was not working and front desk refused to fix it and asked to just crack the window and never offered any compensation. Haha! No customer service skills at all. Convinced to get maintenance guy to fix the AC after arguing for about 5 minutes. Will NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN.

Probably the most important thing to know is that ...

Probably the most important thing to know is that it's CASH ONLY. That would have been exceptionally helpful to know, and neither the St. Marks nor Trip Advisor notes that anywhere. Once I got past that shock and withdrew the maximum allowable from their ATM, the check-in process was fine. The rooms are quite small, one double bed filled nearly the entire room. The bathroom was clean yet also minuscule, with zero counter space, no towel hooks, sparse amounts of towels & toilet paper, and the water in the toilet ran constantly. Showering was an experience! Hot & cold fluctuations in the water temp kept you from taking too long of a shower, that's for sure.
Having said all that, at $130/night, it was fine. No frills, good location, clean, nice black-out curtains, and friendly staff. For the price, I would stay there again.
