My daughter had a recall on the cruise control of her 2014 Charger. She made an appointment to have that repaired, as well as to get an oil change. She took the car to Sport Durst and after a while, the service tech came out and told her that the oil pan plug was damaged, and he would have to "go home and get a special tool" to remove it. He then told her that it would cost $800 to repair the damaged plug, replace the oil pan and then change the oil. She said "No thank you, I will have to think about it." As she left the dealership , the Traction Control and ABS lights immediately came on, and a warning chime went off. She called me, and I told her to take it right back and to tell them the lights have never been on before she gave the car to the service tech. He looked at the car again and told her the right-rear speed sensor was dead. He could replace it for $300. Again, she told him "no."
I work at a car dealership, and so I asked two mechanics there to look at her car. Between them, they have over 50 years of work experience. Both told me that they have NEVER told a customer that they would have to "go home and get a special tool." Looking at the oil pan, both said that they could get the plug off in five minutes or less to change the oil. No special tools needed. They said they could remove the damaged plug, change the oil and put a new plug on in 30 minutes. At $120 an hour (standard rate), that would be $60 for labor. A new plug costs $9. That is $69 total, and the tech tried to get my daughter to pay $800. The speed sensor costs $22, and my guys said it could easily be installed in 30 minutes or less. Again, that is 30 minutes of labor for a total of $60 plus $22. That comes to $82, and my daughter was told that it would cost her $300. Her total cost should have been $161, but my daughter was told $1,100. This doesn't even begin to broach the issue of her never having a problem with the speed sensor. However, when the tech gave her the car back, the lights instantly came on, signifying that problem. It must have been a coincidence. Yeah. Right.
So be forewarned: If any of you have a daughter, wife or girlfriend, DO NOT send them to have a car serviced at Sport Durst in Durham, NC. My daughter didn't pay Sport Durst a dime. You may not be so lucky.
