I am so proud to have volunteered as a coach with Special Olympics MN for over 10 years. It is a wonderful organization that does so much to better individuals and communities.
Truly one of the best and most passionate organizations in Minnesota. They do so much for individuals with and without disabilities and have so many programs (most around sports obviously but not all of them by any means). I highly encourage people to donate, participate or volunteer...it will change your life.
Great organization. It has offered our son the opportunity to practice sports in an environment that better suits his needs. Every event is energizing and uplifting because our son is happy. In addition, being surrounded by parents that do understand the struggles related to special needs provides us with a sense of relief.
SOMN was the best place I could have had an internship my senior year of college. Enthusiastic, fun, and kind staff, volunteers, and athletes made my work easy! I looked forward to coming in every day, just as I am looking forward to continuing my relationship with such a great organization.
During my kids time with Special Olympics and the Northern Lights delegation, I noticed that if you want to compete at the national level, you need to KNOW people and be favored with the coaches. Our kids were also told to score less during certain games to ensure they got a better seed during tournaments because it s all about the medals which are plastic anyway! I m all for supporting special needs people but I m not for cheating to get a plastic medal. I think this whole organization needs an investigation into how coaches interact with the athletes and where all the money goes. I ve heard other delegations having the same issues with the Northern Lights delegation. I still support Special Olympics.
My brother Sam is a Special Olympics MN swimmer and runner. SOMN has given him confidence and leadership skills that inspired him to start his own business selling sweet treats! He's able to stay fit in the midst of all of his baking by participating in SOfit - An incredible opportunity for him to learn all about how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Special Olympics MN is truly a movement; Breaking down stereotypes and changing the world.
