After a diligent search for a primary care provide...
After a diligent search for a primary care provider upon moving to St George, we settled on Southwest Internal Medicine and set up a first patient visit with Karl, the Physician's Assistance to establish care. Our first visit went off without a hitch. Karl was polite and professional and addressed our needs well. Upon returning for a 2nd visit to discuss some other fairly urgent issues, we arrived at the office and were put back in the exam room where we waited for over 45 minutes without an explanation of the delay. I went out to the nurse's station to inquire about the reason for the unseeming wait and was told that Karl had gotten caught up with a previous patient. I explained to Tiana, his medical assistant, that I had no problem with a wait and that I understand that is the nature of clinical medicine. However, I explained I DID have a problem with the fact that we waited for upwards of an hour with NO EXPLANATION by anyone for why we were waiting. I told her that was poor customer service and not in line with the good service we had received previously. At that time, another medical assistance (her name started with an M) turned around and brazenly gave me a disgusted and nasty look for what I had just said. I was firm but polite in how I explained myself to her and for an uninvolved party to the conversation to interject herself so unprofessionally was uncalled for. I asked to see the Practice Manager and returned to our room. Brittany I believe came in and I explained what happened. She told me that "was not what I heard" in getting the other side of the story and became very dismissive. I told her that the wait was not my problem, it was the lack of proactive and professional customer service. The provider then walked in and with a very sarcastic and dismissive look on her face and tone in her voice, she laughingly told Karl "I'm just gonna let you handle this."
At this point, we got up and told them we'd take our business elsewhere. To be made to feel so uncomfortable in my doctor's office where we go for very intimate and personal issues is heinous. I explained the situation to Karl who had walked in on the tail end of it and he was indifferent. He had nothing to say as I expressed my surprise that the providers would allow this kind of treatment to patients. I reminded him that doctors ARE in the customer service business, an often forgotten fact of clinical medicine. We were refunded our co-pay for the day and left.
I STRONGLY recommend that if you want more personal care and want a physician's office that makes you feel welcome, comfortable and valued as a CUSTOMER, you avoid establishing care at Southwest Internal Medicine in St. George. We called Dixie Primary Care who was able to get us scheduled in just a few days. I highly recommend you give that practice a try and avoid the unprofessional and indifferent attitude shown to us at this practice.
