I will start by saying the beach was great and the plane spotting was fun. My stay was from Aug. 19 -24,2019. The true resort experience, is not what is depicted on the website. The reality is vastly different.
Upon arrival, the website purports a welcome drink and towel to greet you. That did not happen. I don't know if they ran out of drinks and towels, but I feel it was lack of supply and staff.
For an all-inclusive resort, the food was mediocre at best. The eating establishments are limited with difficulty in acquiring reservations for the good restaurants. It took 3 days to receive reservations for the good places. The most accessible restaurant, called the Ocean Point,is an "all you can eat" buffet style fare. The key is to arrive close to opening time, because the food runs out and is not replenished too quickly. The breakfast did not have much fruit available, nor was much available with any other meals. The food was lukewarm at best, most of the time. My girlfriend became very sick from the food on our first night there! I suspected it was a bad reaction to the shellfish.Thankfully, she recovered from her illness on the following day with help from the local pharmacy. During my stay here numerous complaints made about the food and the difficulty of obtaining reservations to the good restaurants. I found the wait staff to be generally pleasant and accommodating, but at the Ocean Point, the wait staff supervisor Leona(I believe that was her name) had a nasty attitude. Also, I was expecting there to be Caribbean cuisine on menu, but it was non-existent. A final note on the food, the restaurants that need reservations are worth the wait!
The rooms were nice, but it was an effort to get basic items(lotion,soap,tissues,etc.). During the 5 days spent there, the refreshments in the room were only replaced once. In the room there was an iron, but no ironing board! The sink had an odor of sewage and the shower floor was slippery.
The elevators in the buildings were always crowded and were always very warm.
The pools there are always crowded and the chairs/umbrellas are limited. Unless you claim a chair/umbrella early in the morning, there will be none available. The same goes for the beach too. Claim early or be without!
As far as entertainment, the Sonesta Showteam was very good. There is really not much night time activities, such as dance parties. There was a beach party one evening and the food along with the entertainment was nice .Generally by 10:00 pm, the place is quiet. Adult night activities are seriously lacking. I really expected more adult evening events.
Overall, I have mixed feelings about the resort. The food is definitely sub-par for a resort promoting luxury and I felt a bit cheated. The plane spotting on the beach is a plus, I must say. The rooms could be cleaned better with better access to basic bath supplies. The resort appears to be geared more toward family, than couples. I was disappointed with the lack of adult activities. It is a good idea to bring extra money and take advantage of the tours outside of the resort. The experience did improve after the first day, after intervention by our travel agent along with venting our issues with management at the hotel. This place could use some improvement. I can not see myself returning for another stay
