I started receiving laser hair removal from Sky Sk...
I started receiving laser hair removal from Sky Skin Center beginning sometime in September 2012 following the purchase for services from Groupon. My technician was amazing. As an African American she had working knowledge of what laser settings were appropriate for my skin. She followed procedure in administering the treatments, was professional at all time and excellent at what she does. I had an appointment with her at the end of October 2012 one week before the laser burn debacle. There was a snow storm and the Center called to cancel the appointment. When I called to reschedule with my technician I was told that she was all booked up and the person who answered the call said that she was helping her out and providing services for her clients would I be interested in scheduling an appointment with her. Knowing that it would be only once as I had no intention of changing my technician I agreed to a one time appointment with this worker. On 11/5/12 I arrived for the appointment. The technician never introduced herself and just proceeded to take me into the treatment room. She had my folder so the information as to the settings of the laser was available. I have never met this technician and she has never worked on my skin. Given this I was surprised when she took it upon herself to increase the laser settings. She never tested the skin area after trying the new setting and before proceeding and there is reason to believe that she never should have changed the settings anyway because it was too early in the treatment of 2 of the 3 areas to do such. As a result I sustained burns to my chain, upper lip and underarms. When I called Sky Skin back to notify them of what happen and ask for the name and license number of the technician the receptionist refused to provide me with the information and informed me that she would contact the owner and let her handle it. Meanwhile my regular technician wanted me to come in a meet with their nurse to take a look at the damage. I was not obligated to do it but I met with the nurse who did nothing but minimize the damage and contribute the problem to my dark skin being susceptible to hyperpigmentation from laser treatment. My response was this was not a hyperpigmentation problem these were burns caused by the negligent professional decision of the technician to change the laser settings. Long story short, they gave me a treatment cream that I was allergic to and which scarred my skin further. The medical form I filled out stated that I was allergic to the allergen sulfate. The owner never called and I transferred to their lawyer who was interested in "resolving this matter" until I demanded to be reimbursed the $298 dollars (Groupon reimbursed me for the other treatment area) I spent for the treatment but could no longer use because of the injuries. To date I have not heard from their attorney again. It looks like in order to get my medical bills paid for, be reimbursed for the services I did not receive and damages for the burns I have had to begin to consider hiring a lawyer as their attorney doesn't look like she wants to resolve this after all. If you're going to insist on using this company make sure the technician's are licensed as they should be since it is a requirement of the state. Get their full name and license number. If you have dark skin be very weary of using them. I was fortunate to get the technician I did but after what happened I don't think the other technicians are well trained in working on the skin of people of color.
