I personally was super excited to go to school here. I ve spent the past 5 years of my life attending Sam Houston state and until 2 years ago I would have highly recommended this school to any and everyone. They are going downhill at a rate I can t comprehend, while they spend money building new facilities they don t exactly go above and beyond when it comes to hiring educators. In fact, I would say they cut their budget on salaries for good professors and hire low end ones. I will be retaking many of my core classes for my major from another school once I graduate. I learned very little to nothing at all in my final year at Sam Houston state.

I took one class from SHSU online a couple of years ago and ended up transferring out. The class was fine, but the administrative side was not a pleasant experience for me. They ended up losing my paperwork which forced me to miss the next semester. I also felt fleeced by additional charges. I have had much more pleasant experiences at smaller colleges.
I graduated from SHSU in 2016. There are pros and ...
I graduated from SHSU in 2016. There are pros and cons to going to this school, which I have listed below.
Cons:
-The parking is atrocious. I am angry just thinking about it. I will do my best to explain the parking situation. Imagine you made reservations at a fine dining restaurant where you had to pay a lot of money up front, but by the end of the meal you know you will have paid for something worthwhile. You get to the restaurant with twenty minutes to spare because you figure you can nibble on some bread at the hostess stand. You start to drive around, but there is no parking ANYWHERE. You begin to get frantic; the clock is ticking on as you continue to search for parking. Oh thank god! Someone is pulling out, but just as you are about to pull in here comes BIG-RIMS-ROB to cut you off. You are LIVID! It is time for your reservation, the restaurant is seating someone else at your table that you paid for, and you still cannot find parking. You park five miles away at a grocery store. You have to walk. Up steep hills. It is 105 degrees, raining, and you forgot to wear deodorant.
Now, you know how terrible parking is at SHSU. Only this isn't a meal, it is tuition, and you know you are going to be poor for the rest of your life, and you are late for class because the parking is THAT BAD!
-If you enjoy the sounds of scraping concrete, then you might want to drive in Huntsville. All over town you can hear the loud cries of bumpers and oil pans being battered to death on the pavement as some unsuspecting low car owner attempts to park. I don't really know why this is such a problem, or why the people designing the parking lots in Huntsville had such a hard time deciphering the angle at which you would need to level the pavement in order for cars to pass over it unhindered (they are probably named Rob). Whatever the case, you will have a very hard time driving in Huntsville, and around the campus if you have a low car. In fact, SHSU should just go ahead and add the cost of a lift for vehicles in with their tuition.
-Trying to find a competent person to help you with financial aide, course plans, or your transcript is almost as bad as trying to find a parking spot.
-I was required to do numerous group projects, which wouldn't have been a problem, except that I encountered many people that were content giving minimal to no effort, and all grades were affected. This is frustrating when you pay as much as you do for a course, and your grade is hinging on Suzy-gives-no-effs Jefferson to turn her work in.
-Many of the courses are offered only at night, which is disconcerting when you are trying to take several, and they are all offered at the same exact time as the other courses you need. Quite a conundrum for those of us who cannot be in two places at once! If only time-turners were real.
-There are areas of the campus that are very old and, therefore, grimy. Many of the bathrooms smell of death, and are in desperate need of a remodel. To the credit of the University, funds are being used to beautify and update over time.
-Speaking of death, SHSU is surrounded by several prisons, including a maximum security prison and death row within walking distance. All, probably in closer proximity than most of us had to park while going there.
Pros:
-Small town feel, and small class sizes (especially as you move up in your degree).
-Beautiful scenery, large trees, gorgeous views, and rolling hills.
-Lovely architecture throughout the campus and surrounding areas.
-Friendly faculty. For the most part, I had a lot of wonderful professors, especially as I moved up in my degree and had content specific courses. Many of my professors were dedicated, especially helpful, and knowledgeable.
-Decent sports teams
-Texan/Campus Pride
-Nationally Recognized/Gaining Prestige
-Ability to attend online, and at satellite campuses.
-Not a far commute from Houston or surrounding areas.
Overall, SHSU is a decent school to attend if you can get over the cons.

Having been here for a semester and working on my second, I have lots of love for this school. Being of the fastest growing colleges in Texas, it is expanding very fast. In fact, it is adding a brand new biology building set to open next year, as well as an expansion to the student center.
They also have lots of resources for its students, including tutoring centers for math and writing that are free of cost.
So far, I have loved all of my professors. They have shown great passion about what they teach and it makes me want to learn more.
Though, with fast expansion comes growing problems. Parking has been a huge problem for students and is an issue that must be addressed. If they are charging for a parking pass, they need to have adequate spaces available.
Overall, I highly recommend this school.

I only put five stars so people can see it. This wonderful school most people are talking about it's not. No one answer phones when you trying to get your stuff done in time and get upset when they finally hear about it the last minute. No one like responding to emails or calling you back. You literally have to bug them just to get something out of them and when you finally do half of them don't know what to do and the other half tells you bit by bit and different times everything you need to do or you find out on your own when you have holds on your account. This is a horrible school. I wouldn't recommend anyone going there.

Orientation was great. The faculty, students, and outlying community are awesome. As far as services afterwards horrible. During orientation you were told rooms would be ready 12 July it's the 30 July still unavailable. You can't get parking permits until you have room assignments. However, 17 July is when you can apply for parking permits but without the room that's a NO GO. Concerned parent

Great school. I majored in Accounting and did the 5 year program. I had a job lined up before I finished my second year. I continually reach out to past professors for advice and my career.
I graduated in 2008, and the campus has changed a lot. I still hear a lot of complaints about parking. I never had an issue with it. I lived "close" to campus, but just walked everywhere (if you need a great place to stay, look up "Uncle Darrel's Place" on Ave J). Giving a 1 star ranking for parking seems petty to me.
The only knock I would say is that it IS a commuter school. That's why football games and things like that aren't always full, but we have a high enrollment rate. I get it though, you have to take students you can to grow as a University.
Another note, I was in the Smith-Hutson Scholarship Program through the College of Business. If you need financial aid and have great grades, and you're doing business, apply for the scholarship. I had no idea I would be qualified to get it, but applied because my mom shoved me that way when we visited the school. I met AMAZING people through that and the business school in general.
Sam Houston changed my life.

I transferred to SHSU from TTU. I love Sam, it has the small school feel with very strong academics. My class schedule is very flexible and I have a class size of no more than 35. All of the professors I've had are dedicated and want to help students succeed. The only thing that really sucks is parking. I can't wait to graduate in Aug 2018!

SAM is a great school and I loved my time there. The campus is beautiful! I found SAM to be staffed with an assortment of very qualified and talented instructors. All of my professors had their doctorates and were well established in their respective fields of expertise. Unlike many larger Universities, the professors I had actually taught every single class and did not rely on Teacher Assistants to do the teaching for them. It is evident that Sam Houston State was first established as a Teachers college because they get teachers who are qualified with the education, plus field experience to only confirm their knowledge. The town is not too big, but not too small. You see new people all the time, but will run into friends, too. Although Huntsville was much different from my home town of Austin, I quickly fell in love with the town and still go back a few times a year to walk the campus and eat at Zach's. I loved going to the football games and still make it back for them! Their football team is stout, going all the way to the Div I National Championship in 2011 and 2012! Eat 'em up, Kats!

If you want to dig yourself into debt to a tune of $90k in student loans I would recommend this school. Otherwise, push them into the top 10% at A&M or UT. So much for retirement. If I could give zero stars I would.

It's a long one but it's a must!!!!!
The university itself is great! Amazing professors, the environment and the resources here are great! BUT!!! parking is incredibly terrible especially if you commute! If you live on campus then it's fine because there's literally parking everywhere for people who live on campus, which in turn does not make too much sense to me. Anyways I pay $180 for parking that can range between a half a mile to about two miles away from campus depending on what time you get to campus and god forbid you forget something in your car or get to campus after 7am be prepared to hike to class! I guess it would be ok if there was at least a shuttle taking students back and forth from campus to the ridiculously far parking spaces but no! If you can afford purchasing a permit for the resident parking spaces after having to deal with tuition plus the cost of commuting to campus then that's the best option but like most college students we are most likely more times than most usually broke or on a tight budget! Lastly, this year they have added tons of metered parking which is great for those who go to class once a week but it will burn a hole straight through if you have class everyday. Besides the parking situation and the construction going on literally all over campus the university itself academically is great!

Beware of the art department. They force you through a "project runway" like experience which is torture: AKA WASH. They purposely assign materails that dont work well together, and give due dates for one project during other courses. Over all their "prized" program, which they take pride in is GARBAGE. Do not buy into it. It is set up just to torture students. If you hand in anything late, or dont get along with classmates during group project you get automatic zeros. Even if you have the item by the end of the class. The program is set up to make students fail. Take your money, and laugh all the way to the bank while they torture you. If you have any other school you could go to do it. DO not entire this art program. DON'T do it.

I love this school. I am in a PhD program here now, but I also have two other degrees from here (a bachelor's in psychology and an M.Ed in Education). The teachers are great and the school has lots of resources to help the students out, including a writing center, financial student education, and job and interviewing technique trainers that can help with resume's and interviewing tips and tricks. While the parking is an issue, I will say that the staff also pay more for parking than the students, which in some ways makes me feel better. Also, they are working on parking solutions in the future. Plus, most schools do not allow their freshman cars on campus, but we do. We allow all students parking. Look at some of the other major universities and you will find parking issues everywhere. The professors are great, the staff wants to help you, and I found a job with my M.Ed teaching less than four months post graduation. I worked that for 4 years. At any rate, campus is safe, clean, and the teaching is great.

Am a current student as this school and i HATE IT, they are charging way too much for parking and to make it worse majority of the green parking lots they had for the commute students are now for the students that's living on campus. This is totally unfair because we pay $180 for a permit and have to struggle to get parking space.

I'm a student in this college and let me start by saying DON'T COME HERE unless it close to home or scholarship. This college does not have the best professors and they are not willing to help where it matters. They think you should already know the material before stepping into their class, which I think is crazy because that's why I'm attending their class, to LEARN, NOT to teach myself.

I loved SHSU while I was there. I never truly once had a bad professor. All of them were caring and helpful towards me and wanted to see students succeed. Great faculty. There are ample amounts of free resources that the school has to offer students, but unfortunately many students don t utilize them or are unaware of the resources they have access to as a student.
I m glad I chose SHSU. I enjoyed it while I was there, but I m glad I got out of there when I did. I personally like the small town/historical feel SHSU and Huntsville had when I was a freshman (before all the construction). My favorite part of campus will always be the Austin Hall area. Not a fan of the new, modern buildings going up everywhere, but hey, it s great the university is becoming so successful like it is.

The teachers are the only redeeming quality of the school, aside from one or two. I have struggled since the first day I transferred to this school; not with my grades (honor roll student) but trying to find a staff member that wants to help me succeed. Stop letting your advisors rely on DegreeWorks to get out of doing their job. Stop letting them belittle students by telling them a course is "too difficult" so they won't recommend it to them. Stop letting them pass students around from advisor to advisor until they don't even know who to email anymore. Stop allowing faculty to talk over students and dismiss their concerns.
I'm putting myself into debt to get a degree from a school that could care less about what happens to their students. It's heartbreaking and SHSU should be ashamed for how they make their students feel so worthless.
