One of my favorite wine tasting experiences here on a Sonoma vacation! I loved the gorgeous location- boasting green rolling hills a little off the beaten path- and chatting with staff who enjoy their food (food shows!) and wines.
Go for the Pinot flight, y alls! You will not regret it!!
We had a great time at Schug! It was a very personal and relaxing experience with Glen who answered all our questions patiently and enthusiastically. The food & wine were both fantastic, excellent reds! The grounds are beautiful.
We had a wonderful time at Schug! The self-guided tour lets you explore and learn about their vineyard at your own pace. Additionally, our tasting with Kyle was excellent. We were never rushed through the tasting (granted we came on a weekday), and Kyle answered our many questions with genuine enthusiasm. We will definitely be back!
Took the long trail, it was very nice. Tasting was great, service amazing. Thanks for the experience.
I am not a white wine drinker, but their Sauvignon Blanc is so good. Refreshing and delicious. Like, pop a bottle by the pool and love your life. Got a quick tour from the marketing manager just because he saw us and we asked. The whole staff was so friendly and engaging. Gave lots of recommendations for other wineries and knew tons about the wine. Also were great for conversation and just hanging out. If Gordon is there, do a tasting with him. He is new, but knows his stuff.
Great experience here! We stopped after checking reviews for a bunch of places, and we had agreed to only stop at 2 wineries max. This was our first choice. Absolutely amazing experience! Thom was fantastic and walked us through the tasting as well as gave us great recommendations for places to see in the surrounding area (we were traveling through on a 2 month road trip). We had to pull straws on which wines to buy, settled on the Malbec and Pinot noir, and are more than satisfied with our whole experience! Thanks y'all!
Great family winery. We have been members for over 2 years and have really enjoyed our selections. Price point is very good value for the quality of wine you will enjoy. Highly recommend the cave experience. Only downside is that the wind picks up in the mid afternoon and the flies get pretty bad in the warmer months. Great staff!
Bland wines and exaggerated prices from rude and hostile staff is what you should expect from Shug. I'm sure we had the worst experience possible but we were accused of lying despite saying we were a group the moment we walked in as well as being poorly treated overall. Their wines were the most bland of the day and by far the highest priced. The vineyard and winery themselves were gorgeous.
We purchased better wines for 20-30, theirs were 40.
The walking tour was nice and views were nice but nothing too spectacular. But there's cows at the next farm over and you can really smell them, plus the tasting room is small with no seating area, you have to squeeze your way up to the bar to get service.
We had a wonderful time at Schug. We enjoyed the self-guided tour of the estate and seeing their cave. The guys working were amazing, informative, and went above and beyond our expectations. Thank you for the fun experience!
We honestly had a terrible experience. We have been wine tasting in Sonoma regularly for the last 7 years. We called Schug and said we were running 15 minutes late. They said that wasn t a problem. When we got there our friend went to give our name. He was Indian and it was no longer ok we were late. She was beyond ignorant and also referred to him as our driver . Because he wasbrown and the rest of us were white he was now our driver? We had a driver that never left the shuttle. Jamie was beyond ignorant to our group. We told her how unhappy we were with the way she treated us. She replied that s great that s what reviews are for if you re ever looking for a new winery go try DONT waste your time going here.
Our last vineyard stop, we were more interested in their self-guided tour through the vineyards, but be prepared for extreme heat and sunshine! The bartender was super fun; there was no push for buying anything (unlike most other vineyards). We got to try a late harvest chardonnay that was delightful!
I worked there as a temporary bottler in 2002 2003 the owners and the staff were so nice and friendly never made us feel like temps the place is beautiful
My wife and I visited Schug Carneros Estate on a Saturday afternoon in April and very much enjoyed the personalized and warm service and tour from the staff, the delicious wine and enjoyed walking around the vineyard. Schug was our favorite of the vineyards we toured in Sonoma. I highly recommend checking it out.
I typically steer away from most whites, but was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed everything about Schug. Looking forward to returning!
Had a great experience at the winery for my wife s birthday celebration. Kyle took great care of us and spent the time to explain the wines, the region, gave some extra wines to try and was full of energy. It was a great place to kick off our wine tours and the wines did not disappoint! Thanks again Kyle and early congratulations on your baby girl!
Schug was extremely unaccommodating. I wouldn t recommend this vineyard to anyone. Please do not include on your short list if you re visiting from in town, or even if you re local to be honest. Terrible.
Thanks to Harisson and Johannes we had a very nice visit! Harisson does really put an extra effort into it. Thanks!
Great wines; the wine maker has been local for many decades and knows the great growers of the region. Fantastic pinot noirs and chardonnays especially, other good wines as well. Our tasting server on the weekend was a superbly charming gentleman who really got us into the tasting with his wit and charisma. Good times.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Bought a few bottles on our way out after the wine tasting.
I love finding places like this. Good wine, relaxed atmosphere, very reasonable prices, and fun employees who make you feel like you're there hanging out with friends. The tasting room is small, but it didn't feel crowded or uncomfortable at all. This place should definitely be on your list next time you're visiting Sonoma.
My experience here wasn't my best tasting room experience in terms of service, although the person working was friendly and attentive without being over bearing. She also seemed a little withdrawn and disinterested. This is a little out of the way, but the wine was spectacular. We tasted 5 wines for $10, and each just got better; there were several not available for tasting that day that I would certainly enjoy trying or perhaps buying. The sparkling Pinot Noir was very interesting, though my favorite of their offerings was the chardonnay. Their distribution varies depending on whether the grapes are estate grown or purchased, as that they do both. I definitely plan to be back with my husband so that he can try their wines, too.
Wine is decent nothing to write home about, but their reds werent strong. We also felt a lil rushed as we came here half an hour before closing. if you like chards its worth a stop.
Beautiful vineyard with optional self tour available. Posted signs and arrows lead you through the rows of vines with numerous photo ops!
Went because of good things I heard about the pinots. However, the chardonnay surprised me in a great way. I don't like the usual buttery concoction. Their's had some interesting tastes to it.
But what made this great was the staff. We were helped by Harrison. He knew his stuff with interesting takes on wine and history. It was obvious he really enjoyed his job and believes in Schug.
Also, really liked the winery itself. It feels quaint and similar to a family European winery. Plus, surrounded by amazing hillside scenery.
Always enjoy the food, drinks, and cozy modern atmosphere and it's near everything downtown!
My husband and I just experienced our first ever Schug cave tasting this past weekend and we LOVED it!!! Kyle should win the award of World s best (and most knowledgeable) manager! He was simply phenomenal and was the main reason why we joined the Schug wine club! Of course, the wines speak for themselves, but there s something about a wonderful, knowledgeable staff member that makes the whole thing just work. One of the best places in the area for sure!
This winery is located amongst a winery-packed area and was a nice, convenient stop between going to a couple others but I have to be honest - it wasn't my favorite.
The scenery was gorgeous, but there's no outdoor seating for tastings, so you're standing inside this little area doing the tasting and it feels more like a "please buy our wine and leave" experience than a "come have a nice time and enjoy our space and buy the wine if you like it!" space. The host was super nice, but being inside standing just made it feel uncomfortable.
Overall, I'd recommend it to fans of red wine - that definitely seemed to be their specialty. But if that's not your thing, maybe drive in for the scenery and then head out.
A boutique gem , quality second to none . Knowledgeable staff , everything your looking for in a winery . Enjoy
Very nice place. We tasted all kinds of wines with pleasure. Service was frendly and information of wines very interesting. Worth a visit!
A must visit . A true gem , boutique and very personable experience with quality second to none. Enjoy
Glenn (and Melissa) was a fun, but informative host. Really enjoyed the wine...and the whole experience. Small tasting area, so luckily got a table.Beautiful view. FYI, no picnics/food with wine any more. INCLUDE this winery in your itinerary!
Reserved online with credit card and all. It's a mere placeholder and you actually pay when you get there. Or, they would charge you their no show fee. Confused me for a bit as I thought it was all paid for already. Automatic gratuity was added on for our party of 2. It would have been more respectful if there was an optional line to add tip if desired. We felt like it was snuck in. It was our first tour and sample, ever. It was not a good experience and we felt rushed. Our tour guide was Glen and he definitely makes it known that he does not like kids. We didn't bring our kids but felt a bit offended. Very small tasting room, honestly fit maybe 4-6 adults comfortably without rubbing shoulders.
Great private tour and tasting. The grounds are scenic and the cave is nice
My son and I flew in from NC yesterday to tour the vineyard. The owner, Axel Shug and his entire family treated us as if we were part of their family! I have never received such kind, warm, and caring hospitality as we received from them. The wine tastings were exquisite as was the entire experience! What a beautiful place with amazing people and fantastic wines! This should be a MUST SEE for everyone! The Shug family deserves the highest accolades!
My sincerest thanks to them for an unforgettable time and their true servant hearts!

First of all let me say that Schug has good wines and I've purchased their wine during my previous visits. I had memorable times at the old wine tasting room with the previous staff. I believe they had a few elderly gentlemen that are sweet and charming. I wish I could say the same about the current staff. In particular, I do like to point out their Outreach and Estate concierge manager (Jamie) was not so hospitable. Wine tasting is an experience that comprises of wine and the memories built around it. Thereby, I certainly do not recommend Schug for their lack of hospitality which is a bit disheartening as they do make memorable wines. In the interim, I do recommend a visit to Anaba or Gloria Ferrer for their wines and hospitality.
Tiny tasting room and a bit out of the way from Wine Road, but great outdoor views and exactly the kind of creamy, buttery chardonnay I enjoy.
The staff is very knowledgable about their wine and very friendly. They have excellent wine. Glen is amazing .
Brilliant! Has a self Tour... you get to take a stroll through the vineyards. Excellent Pinot
