SaveLIFE Foundation: Improving Road Safety and Emergency Medical Care in India
SaveLIFE Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that is dedicated to improving road safety and emergency medical care across India. The foundation was established in 2008 by Piyush Tewari, who lost his cousin due to a road accident. Since then, the foundation has been working tirelessly to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents in India.
India has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were over 4.5 lakh road accidents in India in 2019 alone, resulting in more than 1.5 lakh deaths and over 4.5 lakh injuries. These numbers are alarming and highlight the urgent need for measures to improve road safety.
SaveLIFE Foundation works towards this goal through various initiatives such as advocacy, research, training, and implementation of innovative solutions.
Advocacy:
The foundation advocates for policy changes at both national and state levels that can help improve road safety standards across India. They work with government agencies, civil society organizations, media outlets, academic institutions as well as other stakeholders to raise awareness about issues related to road safety.
Research:
The foundation conducts research on various aspects of road safety such as crash data analysis, behavioral studies among drivers/pedestrians/cyclists etc., infrastructure design & engineering etc., which helps them identify gaps & challenges that need attention from policymakers & implementers alike.
Training:
The foundation provides training programs for different stakeholders involved in emergency medical care such as police officers/first responders/ambulance drivers etc., which helps them provide timely assistance during emergencies thereby reducing fatalities/injuries caused due to delays or lack of proper care.
Implementation:
The foundation implements innovative solutions like GPS-enabled ambulances equipped with life-saving equipment like oxygen cylinders/defibrillators etc., mobile apps that connect accident victims with nearby hospitals/emergency services providers quickly & efficiently etc., which have helped save many lives so far.
One notable initiative by SaveLIFE Foundation is "Good Samaritan Law". This law protects bystanders who come forward to help accident victims from legal hassles/harassment by police or hospital authorities while providing assistance during emergencies.
Another initiative called "Road Safety Alliance" brings together different stakeholders including government agencies/corporates/media houses/social activists/NGOs etc., under one umbrella towards achieving common goals related to improving Road Safety standards across India.
