I came here a few years ago because my car was overheating. I took it here and they mentioned I needed a new water pump as well as a new thermostat. Paid for both and it still overheated. I even got a brand new radiator during this time and it still overheated. Took it back here and they said the problem is actually that I need a new head gasket, which as you may know is one of the most expensive repairs on a car. I know that overheating can LEAD to a new head gasket, but the issue the entire time was the head gasket, not the radiator, thermostat or water pump that I paid for.
My issue is that they didn't properly diagnose the problem in the first place. While they are very friendly and have a great reputation around here, you'll notice other reviewers who had issues also point to diagnosis issues where you end up paying for fixes that were not needed. I feel to really be a great auto repair shop you must excel at diagnostics otherwise you're wasting your customers time and money. So if you just need routine maintenance they are probably good at that, but if you truly need someone to spend time to get to the core of an issue (especially if you don't want to throw unnecessary money at an older car) then I can't recommend them for that.

I just move from Florida and most the auto repair will say you need to change your tire or they will charge some $$$$ to do that but here in Roy auto repair they check of my tire 2 of them make sure everything good and ready to go NO CHARGE at all

I've been going to Roy's since 1997 when I moved to the area. They are a very trusted business and customer service is excellent. They've always be extremely honest with me. It's very hard to find skilled people like the ones at Roy's that are also good, honest, and trustworthy. I've brought a lot of different cars to Roy's over the years and I can't imagine going anywhere else. Steve worked very hard and creatively on one of my older cars in late 2014 to send my car's computer board to a company to work on it for a few hundred dollars instead of a simple and standard option to just replace it for a thousand dollars. They're great and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Went in to have my recently purchased used vehicle diagnosed due to a noticeable misfire in the engine. Was quoted for $1,800 worth of work (even after requesting only the necessities for budgeting purposes). I then brought this vehicle to my 75 year old family mechanic, and he fixed the misfire in one day with a basic $500 tune up. Interpret this however you please. These guys knew I was young, desperate, and clueless.

Biggest waste of money. Charged me upwards of $800 to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to my car. If there's actually something wrong with your car, I highly recommend NOT going to Roy's. I came in because I heard a noise from the rear axle area of my car. I was told it has a bad differential that will need replacement, among other miscellaneous things that I probably didn't need replaced. But since I'm a sucker, I trusted them and went with it. They couldn't find the diff, so I ordered it. After it being in the shop for 3 weeks, it's finally done but with a $700 bill. I drive it maybe 20 miles and the problem starts again, but much worse. It starts smoking out of the diff. I take it back in and it turns out the diff I just bought overheated and is now ruined. I then discovered on my own that if the tires aren't all the same size, it can cause uneven wear and overheating. So another $130 for new tires. I got the car back and Bam, the noise is still there. It probably needs another whole new differential or who knows whatever else. In conclusion, they fix symptoms, not problems and will squeeze as much money out of you as you'll let them. So here's to waiting with my car in the shop for a month and paying $830 for absolutely nothing to be done to my car. I have NEVER been screwed over so bad by a shop before. If you need an oil change, they're probably fine. But if you need competent diagnostics, and fair service, keep looking.

Look, I hate going to a repair shop as much as anyone else. That being said, I would go to Roy s anytime! I have had to use them 5 or 6 times and each time I have been impressed with their communication and honesty. Where others have tried to charge me hundreds for a gamut of different reasons, they were able to advise me on only the necessities and save me a ton of money! In fact, last time I was there they needed my car longer than anti pirated to try and diagnose the issue. Due to the extended time, they didn t charge me the diagnostic fee! Go to them and you won t be disappointed!

This is an honest to goodness auto repair shop. They are professional and competent and they went out of the way to diagnose my electrical system for no charge. Turns out my battery ground needed cleaning.
10 bucks for the service and I was back on the road. Also, they gave me a quote on an alternator that was half the price of my dealership. Go to Ray's with confidence.
I needed to renew my plates and the mechanic I used to go to quoted me $1,200 for the needed work before they could pass my vehicle for inspection. I didn't believe I was being shot straight so I took it to Steve and his team at Roy's to get a second opinion. I didn't give him any context, just told him the same thing I told my former mechanic, "tell me what I need to pass the inspect." With complete sincerity Steve broke the bad news to me that he couldn't pass my vehicle for inspection without having to do $80 worth of repairs! I'll never forget that moment when I realized I had found my forever mechanic who would always be honest and treat me fair. I've taken my vehicles to Roys for a decade now and every time they come through with elite professional quality, care and more than fair pricing. These guys always manage to get me in pretty quickly. They always seem to have pretty good rates on services, especially over the shoddy work you'd get at Dobbs or Firestone across the street. They are reliable and do good work. Parking lot is kind of a pain to get in and out of though.
Can I give these guys more than 5 stars? They are a hands down honest mechanic shop, I always feel like my car is well taken care of with them. We've moving to Kansas City and I'm super disappointed that I can't take them with me.

Was on a road trip and stopped in for some desperate work. They were uncommonly accommodating and truly made me feel like a unique and valued customer, even though I had never been there before. They offered a free shuttle service to a nearby airbnb that I rented. They worked with me to find the best and most affordable options for my repair. I am totally satisfied and recommend them highly.
Let me preface this review with the fact that as of right now I have not had service done to my vehicle here, however just in dealing with their technicians in refuting absurd charges from another shop (firestone) I would say they are extremely honest and good people here. They saved me about $500 in labor costs when the other shop was trying to double charge me for labor costs.

Awesome, awesome, awesome repair shop. I've never had an issue here and what I like most about them is that they are HONEST. Leaving your car in someone else's hands involves a lot of trust. I recently took my car there because my hood would't open. When I got there apparently it started opening again. They told me that it was working fine and that the latch was a bit gummed up but other than that it was working fine. They could have easily charged me to repair it and not told me that it was working but they were upfront and honest. In addition, since it was only there for a few minutes they didn't charge me anything. I don't let many people work on my cars as I do most of it myself but Roy's is one that this unskilled amateur gearhead trusts. I can't recommend this place enough.

I completely trust this place. Steve made calls for us to see what we should do while we were stuck in a hotel in Kentucky recently with a transmission out on our car. We called to get his recommendation and he volunteered to check into pricing and did so....and promptly called us back within 30 minutes. Other things have caused us to be amazed by the high level of service received. We've gone here for about 20 years and never regretted it in all that time. Highly recommended.

I have been going to Roy's for nearly 30 years. It is one of the most reliable, high-quality, top-notch auto service centers in the St. Louis area.
