They work so hard here to find animals new homes as well as make the sheltered animals feel as welcome as possible. Stop by and save a life! It's also a great place to volunteer if you are looking to spend some time with dogs/cats that need some love. Pretty easy to get started and they have really flexible hours.

Love coming here, usually they have a great selection of animals to choose from. Very well taken care of and location is fairly easy to get to. Adoption fees aren't as bad and most animal needs are taken care of prior to adoption. Will continue to return!

I really love the dog we adopted from here! We are definitely in for some good times with her funny personality. The staff was phenomenal, they did a meet and greet to introduce our dog to her and things went great. They warned us about changes in diet and activity. She was spayed and had been on medicine. This was totally worth it. Thank you

See the review by Megan Hall. This exact thing happened to my daughter. She fell in love with a bunny that was on hold in case it s owner claimed it. She applied and was told she was first on the list, then was contacted and told it was hers and to come and pick it up. She made special arrangements to get there on-time, spent $$$ on special housing, food, bedding.... She arrived with her kids and husband - excited, happy, and ready to welcome a new pet into their home. When she arrived they said, Sorry, we made an administrative error and adopted the animal out, but you can have the other bunny. Which wasn t at all similar in personality and she hadn t felt the same attachment. The system at this facility is completely unacceptable. It s obviously a problem that has occurred more than once, which says to me that they have very little regard for the feelings and attachments that people and animals form. Be very cautious about any animals you are first in line for, they don t check their records before they let it go. Best advise, don t get your hopes up, and get there first thing in the morning on the day your pet is available - or just go somewhere else.

These folks do a great job getting stray animals back to their families, treating abused animals & finding homes for animals needing them. This is my RACC rescue cat. Very well cared for & super loving.

One week ago i adopted a Lab/Sheperd mix puppy (Mr Bucket), me and my wife named him Loki (because we have a Lab named Thor lol). The staff is very good, the process to adopt was easy and they answered all my questions and gave me some advise to take care of him.

Clean, and they care for the animals that are there. They were very helpful for helping me find a new kitty to adopt. My cat had flea treatment, a microchip, and was up to date on her shots.

Warning: If you take a stray cat here, they do not have the room for it. They are currently only able to take injured cats or kittens. The lady who informed me of this originally was quite rude telling me I had stolen someone's cat. When I took the cat back a second time, the 2 ladies that spoke to me, explained it much better.

This place is great. Lost my dog Blue for a few terrifying hours today and RAC&C got back to me promptly to see how things were going -- on a Saturday, no less. Thankfully, Blue had been found - eating chicken bones out of a dumpster at a nearby 7-11. Blue, you are such a prankster.

Although we did not adopt a dog yet, I was very pleased with our experience. The volunteers are truly committed to the dogs, accommodating to questions and helping you make the right choice. I was very impressed they had a behaviorist who had worked with all of the dogs and was truly able to discuss their behaviors and how that would match with your family. They spent quite a bit of time with our family, provided a lot of very helpful information relative to our family, and were very accommodating to let us visit with the dogs inside and outside to see their interactions with our kids.
They are focused on matching dogs and families, not making money off of adoptions or cycling dogs through.

This is a wonderful place to adopt your next animal baby. We recently adopted our dog jax from here and they were the best of help when helping us decide which dog was best for us. They knew all the dogs so well which made things a lot easier. They also showed our pug kobe lost of love when coming to meet jax. Thank you

Love this place. However, the lady at the front desk with dark hair she sometimes wears a baseball cap could be more Friendly. She always seems agitated and she speaks to her staff in a condescending manner. The young girl with the paw tattoos on her leg is such a sweet lady, and very helpful

Just bought our little kitty , Wizard. The volunteers really seem like they know what they're doing, had great knowledge of the animals, and are just overall very helpful. We fell in love with our little guy & knew he was ours from the moment he walked into the visitation room!!!!

I went Wednesday for the $4.00 adoption, I was told by a lady that was working in the cat room that the event was running until Sunday, I went to get a cat I fell in love with today but was told it was going to be $100.00 to adopt him! I was so disappointed.

Absolute worst service ever. ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY!!! I called last Wednesday, 8/14 to report a deceased cat under my next door neighbors (abandoned) house and someone was supposed to come retrieve it shortly thereafter. Called twice again on Thursday, 8/15 and Friday, 8/16 and dispatch was to send someone out ASAP. As of 11am on Monday, 8/19, the cat is still decomposing under the porch. Plenty of children play in the neighborhood and I pray that one of them doesn't discover the dead cat and get some terrible disease due to Richmond Animal Care & Control's complete and utter negligence!!!

I found a dog on the road, took him here. Having never been to a pound previously, I was shocked to find such care and loving workers there. I felt peace for the little guy, after I left. Like a dog Hotel. They're personable and very nice.

I have attempted to get assistance from Animal Control on several occasions and they have never helped me without getting others involved. I have had to call the mayor's office or the councilwoman to get them to do their job. The last instance was when I had a raccoon stuck in my chimney. They not only didn't personally help but they didn't even attempt to provide any information. Maybe if I was a dog they would assist me.

The people are so rude. The place is very dirty, and I get the feeling like they don't care about the animals. The woman behind the counter screamed at me for wearing a smart watch, because she thought it could take pictures.

Adopted our fur baby, Baloo from RACC on Saturday 11/23 and the staff was absolutely AMAZING and Baloo (now named Easton) has definitely made himself at home and is loving every minute of it.

Frustrated and hurt are the words that come to mind when I think of my experience here.

We visited the shelter and fell in love with a dog that was still on stray hold. We even visited the shelter twice that day because she was everything our family wanted. We put in a application and were told to come back yesterday as we were the first application and could hold her till close. We were told to bring our dog in as well the make sure the two did okay together. The day before we were supposed to get her the staff even called us to confirm that yes, we will be taking her. So my husband and I got off of work earlier to bring the new addition home. So we arrive the day that was promised to us to find out she had been adopted out earlier that day. We had my kids and my dog and we re told that it was a communication error on their part and that they were sorry. My kids were completely devastated. Staff did reach out to us about an hour later to make it right but we re still extremely hurt and disappointed. How do you lose documentation of an application (in which we have a note they gave us when we put the application in stating to come back yesterday) as well as a phone call to confirm the adoption?

The kids and I will just visit, she said. It's good for the kids AND the animals to socialize, she said. We'll just take some toys and food, she said. Then she said, honey, aren't our cats cute?

My fur baby passed away on Friday. They were not only very appreciative of the items that I donated, but also genuinely apologetic for her passing. Please consider donating items items in memory of your pet

Staff is really invested in what they do. I went in to report an animal neglect case, as I couldn't get someone on the phone. The woman at the counter, a long-time volunteer, explained that the phone rings very quietly and that they were extremely busy that day. Regardless, they passed the message along and got an officer out to the site of the neglect. After that, I had a brief chat with the folks at the desk while my friend considered adopting, and all of them knew the animals by name, and clapped and cheered when an adopted animal left. So heartwarming to see folks in the animal welfare industry who care so deeply.

Adopted two amazing dogs from here! RACC is our city pound, but they are NO KILL, and raise funds constantly to offer life saving surgery to animals that may or may not even make good pets, which I believe shows not only caring, but the sort of optimistic outlook essential for the job. Recently they even had a diaper drive for our local child services, since child protection agencies (rightly) don't have access to the same social media outreach RACC does. On the rare occasion I've had to call about a stray dog or had another question, the staff has always been prompt and polite.

It blows my mind this place doesn t have a 5 star rating overall! The staff is so knowledgeable and truly live for their work. These folks are true heroes! You d be silly to not adopt from them.

They're wonderful. The staff put their animals first, period. They're really thorough with making sure that potential adopters are a good fit before they'll let you go through with the adoption process. Their trainers absolutely help the pups learn the basics. In my experience, even though the pup loved my human family, we weren't able to adopt because my dog wasn't open to a new pupper friend. If the staff just wanted to get the pup out of there, they would have sent him home with me.

Go there! Don't just try to call in and follow their social media. If you can't handle getting to the shelter and finding a good match, you don't deserve an animal.

A great animal shelter you would think it was a privately owned shelter. Plenty of animals, their own doctor a very knowledgeable staff. Very friendly and caring. Very nice accommodations considering it's not a vacation kennel. Thumbs up to them! They go above and beyond

Had been looking for a puppy for a long time. The staff here helped me find the perfect little guy, and they were so kind, helpful and flexible through the whole process. Plus the adoption fee was SO reasonable considering it included getting him fixed, microchipped, and boosted on his shots. Can't say enough good things!

I just adopted the cutest dog. She is housebroken, knows commands and is a great car companion. She s been here s couple of hours and is asleep from running around the yard 100 times. Thanks to the wonderful staff at RACC for being so helpful and loving the animals.

They took very good care of my oscar catwhen I surrendered him three years ago because I needed to go back to Florida to work on my recovery and do some IOP, I at first was apprehensive of surrendering him there as the word control is in their name so when you hear that one can assume that it is a kill shelter pound but that's further from the truth. This week the week of August 6th they had gone out to do a welfare check on a bunch of dogs and a house and they found two small children in the house sitting at a table surrounded by needles and condoms and they took them in and provided them support and comfort. So what they did was to partner with the DCS and they have been accepting donations for the DCS diapers baby wipes baby food and strollers so they can get them off to the DCS so all hats off to RACC for all of their help.

They cannot manage troubled dogs. I went to get a rottweiler and because he bit someone they sent him to a rescue. They did not even give me an opportunity to reach out to him. This place sucks

Some of the staff had an attitude, like they are better than others. I do know a few of the officers personally.
Aside from that I do a lot of donating cause I know the shelter needs it. Shredded paper, newspaper, blankets, towels....
I've not adopted from RACC before but I use to work for RACC & help w rescue & fostering.

This place appears to be a loud, concrete shelter like any other. However, the behaviorists have great insight about each animal, they are careful to hand-select new additions into your family, and they know and care for each animal as their own. My sweet new pitty is a great fit.

I have reached out and left messages at this location several times over the course of a couple of months. They NEVER answer the phone and they do not call back yet, every time I visit the location there are at least two people sitting or standing while simultaneously staring in my face. When asked why no one ever answers the phone I m told that they are very busy. I know what busy looks like and it doesn t look like multiple idle people with empty hands. When I need information or help I actually have to get in my car to drive down to them. I cannot keep my pet now and I had to bring him and his possessions to the animal shelter to try to rehome him. I was told that there was nothing they could do because they only have space for pets that animal control brings in. I had to explain my situation multiple times for her to even offer any alternatives. I was also told that if I leave the dog with them involuntarily, I would be charged with abandonment. I m in a situation and just needed help. I took the dog off the street in the first place but i am simply unable to keep him now. I had plans to donate to this location in the future but I have definitely changed my mind. Thank you RACC for being completely useless every single time I have reached out to you.
