The new owners are working hard to keep up the high bar set by Bernard and Cathy over 20+ years. When it's busy (weekends) expect long wait times. Mostly the menu and food are the same and very good. Details like fresh baked baguettes and pastries are no longer available.

I've been going to Cafe Bernard for five years and although ownership has changed and they no longer serve morning buns the atmosphere is the same and the food was good as well. Very cute and the patio is a nice option as well. Service was cheerful and attentive.
Been going to Bernard s for as long as I can remember It s under new ownership now, but the food is still just as fantastic as it always was. They even have some new additions with their smoothies and juices. The pastries are awesome. Hey Katie Crooks, your review is absurd and as a local guide you should do a better job of guiding people. Owning a new business can be difficult and if they have to work out some kinks in the beginning maybe you could give them a break before you start complaining on the internet.
Best kept secret in Basalt or valley ! Chef has depth of experience resulting in producing the best, most sophisticated meals. Friendly service , excellent wine list and stellar offerings make this our number one dinner destination.
Love this little French inspired cafe. Wonderful food and maybe the best hot chocolate I have ever had. But on a busy Saturday morning there was only 1 waitress working, who was doing incredible, which caused for somewhat long brunch trip. Oh well, I had time to have another hot chocolate so all is well
The food was phenomenal! The decor was pleasantly appealing, and the staff were attentive and courteous. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.
My experience in France is that you go to the simplest of cafes, roadside stands, even gas stations, and get amazingly good tasting simple fare. This is that type of cafe experience. Cute, cozy atmosphere, not a lot of seating, but outstanding simple French-inspired creations.
This is our number one choice when in Basalt for lunch
I m partial to the Turkey sandwich on a baguette. Served with potato salad. Simple but delicious!
Update 2020: A couple, Anabel and Alejandro bought and have been running Cafe Bernard for a couple of years now. The food was good before, it s even better now! Alejandro is an amazing chef! Still our favorite in Basalt (and the whole mid-valley).
They kept the menu pretty much intact but have added their own twists. Great food before......even better now! Still with a French-inspired influence. My favorites are the eggs Benedict, the salad Nicois and whatever special Alejandro has created for the day.
I felt they don't skimp on food costs and bring quality food and service to your table. If I want breakfast and I'm in the Roaring fork valley this is my restaurant of choice. The new owners are doing an exemplary job!
This place has some of the best breakfast/brunch I've ever had! Definitely the best breakfast/brunch I've had in Colorado. The waffles are to die for and the benedicts are incredible!
Disappointed! We used to love coming to Cafe Bernard, and always had timely and courteous service. Unfortunately, it seems that has changed under new ownership. They seem very disorganized. Waited a significant amount of time for food (a couple who arrived after us had paid and left before we even got our food...), and one of the plates was bone cold once brought to the table. They've also swapped up some of the recipes, which is a shame. Not the same anymore, guess we will have to now find a new weekend breakfast spot!
Best dinner in Basalt ; rivaled best in Aspen where chef trained extensively . Caesar salad, bread, ratatouille, trout all outstanding . Great wine selections. Good music, intimate.
Service was terrible. The waitress was rude and pushy and the atmosphere was tense and unenjoyable. The food was average at best and for that price you can find much better venues in the area
Quaint spot. Wonderful service. Delicious food. It's been awhile since we've been here. So happy that the "new" owner/chef is serving beautifully prepared food. My husband had the steak and eggs. The sauce was amazing and the steak was cooked perfectly. I had the lox and bagel - simple and fresh. We're going back for dinner tonight!
it's like small business with nice decoration. food are good and variety. recommended to who are not in a hurry coz not many staff to work here. it's for enjoying the breakfast.
This is a charming restaurant in downtown Basalt that needs to be on your list if you are in the area. Yes, I did read all of the reviews prior to our visit but frankly, I just never thought that the Alejandro and Anabel team were going to completely blow us away especially with all of the fine dining options that are available in the area. Over the years we have found it hard to find a place that fires on all cylinders. Typically my wife tends to always win the teddy bear when it comes to the main course, however, that was not the case this time as both entrees were prepared to perfection and that includes all sides.
We shared the mussels appetizer (almost a meal in itself) and had the shrimp curry and pork osso buco for the main course. Frankly, both were the best we have ever had! The wine selection is excellent. Unfortunately, we did not sample the desserts as we were stuffed.
This place reminded me of dining at a wonderful street-side cafe in Paris 40 years ago. No blaring music or part-time wait staff. Anabel was efficient, pays attention to detail, and seems to do a great job of covering it all. We will definitely be back! P.S. The single gentleman behind us raved about his pasta dish.
BEST morning buns and cappuccinos on main street. The owner is the sweetest and kindest woman, working hard to upkeep and maintain the old-school vibes and traditions of Bernard himself a must visit when we head home to the valley and a must to support in old town Basalt
In town from Seattle. Was really looking forward to trying this place on a recommendation, but they were closed on a Wed during their posted open hours with no note
My wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at Bernards last night and had such a nice dinner. The service was fantastic! Anna and her husband are great people. The clam chowder was the best I've ever had. The Caesar salad was perfect. I had the Elk and my wife had the Salmon. Both were excellent. Can't wait to go back soon. Thank You
One of the best breakfasts I have ever had. I enjoyed the French toast while my husband had the trout scramble. Great coffee and friendly service as well. Small little seating area made for a homey feel. Strongly recommended if you are in the area!
I LOVE this place. Cute, 20 seat cafe. The food is fantastic and if you want their famed morning buns you better get the when they open because when they're out, they're out.
Incredible breakfast! The smoked trout hash with two eggs over easy is mouth-watering and the French toast is scrumptious! Prices are definitely reasonable for this high-quality experience. We can't wait to come back and try dinner our next visit to Basalt.
Four friends on a lovely evening last week had a great meal at Cafe Bernard. It s a little cafe tucked away on Basalt s main street. Surprisingly, not busy we enjoyed a great meal for a very good price. The menu selection was varied and sharing 2 table appetizers everyone left quite full. The Caprese salad was well prepared and presented. The steak was perfect! I ve never tasted better mushroom filled ravioli but would recommend it rather than the lobster filling. The shrimp curry garnered praise even though it was a little hot for some of us. With a nice wine and beer selection this Cafe is not to be missed.
