Highly recommend you to take this alternative rout...
Highly recommend you to take this alternative route instead of 101. It's not very long and yet very scenic and easy straight drive. Stop by the Big Tree for a break

Stayed here for 2 nights during our family vacation and had an amazing time. There was so much to see and do within a half mile of our camp site that we didn't even end up driving elsewhere in the park. There was a trail starting within 2 sites of where we camped that goes past a gorgeous creek, winds through the woods, etc. Beautiful Sitka spruce and lots of enormous redwood trees to see! Several have cavities big enough for people to fit in. Our kids climbed on downed redwood trunks and played in the creek. Campsite was not huge, but big enough for our 2 large tents and a canopy. Nice metal bear box at each camp site. Great bathrooms with shower rooms. Coin showers- 1 minute per quarter. Saw and heard an elk in the woods right behind our tent.
There are some secret gens to this place, just off the beaten path. I highly recommend you walk around a bit..
We drove there in an RV. I was skeptical about to drive or not, but entering the place when you are on front seat and everyone else is sleeping was a good decision I made [you will see, inclination, trees, fogs, temperature and the colors are changing every minute, if coming from south]. Even inside the forest, you will get all different kind of vegetation and water bodies which all are uniquely beautiful. Also, they have many places like rope way and eco friendly museums to enhance the experience of the serenity of this reserve. For me the value addition was to gobble up the load of Indian food by the Klamath river and hearing that this place is famous for its cryptic ape habitats [I forgot now if that was Bigfoot or Sasquatch :D]
Simply a must go the red wood trees are amazing and so extremely beautiful and they have nice clear trails for you to walk down if you happen to be in the area please stop there and do yourself a favor
This park is gorgeous. I have camped and hiked here. I took the James Irvine Trail from here to Fern Canyon, was magical with all the redwoods and beautiful scenery. Took lots of pictures. I'm glad we had a car at Fern Canyon since I'm not in shape, it's 4.6 miles one way. Camping is awesome, very nice sites and well kept. I have wonderful memories camping with the kids here and I'm sure they do to. Sometimes the elk are around which is very cool. I've had them Chase my dog once so be careful with your pets and keep them leashed. The visitor center here is very awesome as well and lots of info and things to see. I'm looking forward to visiting here again soon!
Beautiful country, and the elk are fun to watch. This part of the world is a fantastic place.
A beautiful park in the redwoods. Also close to a great beach. I got a chance to mountain bike next to an elk herd.
Beautiful place to enjoy the redwoods! Great camping. Interesting trails. Or simply a drive-thru on the old road. A must see in northern California!
Beautiful trees, well maintained campsites, and interesting trails.
Must see. I did the 11 mile loop that goes to the beach and back, and it was a truly great hike. The trees are the biggest I've ever seen, but unlike other redwood parks, this one is diverse enough to keep you engaged. It's much more than just a whole bunch of trees
This is one of the most amazing and beautiful places on earth. 100% worth the effort to get here. Prepare to get wet or muddy. Start your hike at the campground and end in fern canyon.Youll end your hike with a spiritual experience strolling through a cool stream and a jurassic forest covering narrow canyon walls.
Many gorgeous trails. Friendly and informative ranger/naturalists.
An amazing place to stay or just visit Fern Canyon.
Love this place. Beautiful grounds. The bathrooms/showers are always clean and well stocked. It has large private campsites and spaces for RVs. Best to book in advance.
one of the most unusual and beautiful places I've ever seen
Such a beautiful place with breathtaking scenery. There are pull offs on the side of the road where you can stop and enjoy. Many markers for sights you don't want to miss.
This place is beautiful! If you haven't been here yet you need to go asap! It's so perfect it appears as though it was arranged that way. Please go when you have a chance
One of the most amazing places on Earth. A must see for all redwood lovers.
This place is gorgeous! It wasn't too crowded in the middle of June. It's surprisingly cool. Maybe bring a jacket in spring or fall. In my opinion it's the less crowded, just as beautiful alternative to the national park. It's free as of 6/17/18.
I always watched NG with my dad growing up and never got a chance to see the Redwoods in person. Completely different perspective on how massive these trees can get.
What an amazing park, well worth exploring and getting lost in these magnificent redwoods
Nice views of the ocean. Can usually see seals warming on the rocks below.
Best of the Redwood national park, quiet and clean. Lots of options for trails and camping. Highly recommend
A beautiful location for camping! Fern canyon is a must-see if you visit Prairie Creek, although the road to it is rather bumpy.
If you are driving up the 101 it is absolutely worth it to take the scenic route through this park. The trees are huge and its a very straight and peaceful drive. Some very good hikes or pull out spots to look around. Very cool place.
I camp here year round. All 4 seasons. A lot of fun and lot of elk!
Fabulous 7 mile hike in the forests - the team at Orkin Visitor Centre set us up perfectly: the colours were just amazing!
Beautiful place, love taking the kids and dogs for a walk through the trees.. a definite must, if you never been..
The 14,000 acre park is a coastal sanctuary for old-growth Coast Redwood trees
Awesome place . We did the 10 mile round trip hike on the James irvine trail to fern canyon. We took a break on the beach after ! Beautiful hiking. Very shaded through the redwoods so bring a sweater. Very dense . Water at the trailhead and at fern canyon parking area. We saw no one on the trail but fern canyon was a little busier since it s accessible from the parking lot .
Crown Jewel of Northern California! An increadible wonderland of beautiful trails, canyons and campgrounds to visit and explore. All the staff I dealt with was super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I just love this place. I go in the off season because it looks like it can get crowded and I go there to get away......Best thing they could do is expand this Park and create another campground. I love the interpretive trails, really educational. Elk and salmon were both plentiful while I was there.
Great place for hiking in beautiful nature. So untouched and well protected place. I don't think there are many place like this, where you can enjoy the silence in the woods. Could use some more waypoints, though.
Wonderful, magical place to hike. You can spend hour here eyeing the giants!!
It's is truly epic and the pictures do not do it justice!
Gorgeous spot for a hike, the rangers were very helpful.
Great campground and the drive to gold bluff beach was awesome
Check out corkscrew tree! Great place wish we could walk dogs there though :(
Wonderful place to visit. No charge to enter most areas. Worth the trip.
Beautiful place to camp. Very well monitored and maintained. Showers are very nice, restooms are very clean. All workers were very welcoming and knowledgeable. 9
Only about 45 min drive to the beach, tall trees Grove and fern canyon which all make for a nice day and camping experience.
Lovely views of ancient redwoods through twisting roadways. Elk common in the area. Consider stopping for a short hike along the mystic Fern Canyon, a popular spot, but does require several mines on dirt roads.
Amazing hike!!!! We went on the 7 mile hike because that's all we had time for. It took is 3.5 hrs and we stopped multiple times to take pictures. It was breathtaking and I would love to go back and go on the long hike that goes along the beach. The hike was definately a challenge and very muddy at some points so dress accordingly.
It's a 30 minute drive to the campground and a bit further to Fern Canyon, but it's worth the drive. The campground is right on the beach and has flushing toilets and showers that were kept fairly clean. Be prepared for a lot of sand (it is a beach after all). There's a trail close by that takes you through the hills all the way to fern canyon if you want a medium difficulty hike.
One of the best places to see these beautiful trees up close and personal without having to hike forever. We came in November and it seemed we had the park all to ourselves!! Found the Corkscrew Tree...amazing!!
So much funn! If you like hiking and and the beach and the Forest. It's an awesome playground for anyone. Please go, camp, hike, lounge at the beach and get this experience.
The Redwoods are amazing and the trails are brilliant. The staff at Prairie Creek State Park Visitor Centre are really helpful.
My favorite place in the state virgin redwood forest with several miles of wild beach, great meadows with elk herds. Streams run the forest and go through sand dunes to the sea. Must see: Fern Canyon.
Amazing trees and trails. We had a great time and wish we could capture how magnificent these Redwoods are on pictures. Strongly recommend to come and experience it yourself.
Hands down the most amazing redwood experience for me! I had such a great time there :)
Beautiful, clean park. I would recommend getting here early if you want to enjoy a hike without any distractions. We started around 7 AM, doing a 11 mile loop. We didn t see anyone until the last quarter of the hike. We were also lucky enough to run into two sets of elk grazing on our hike.
Also, this park is free, I couldn t help but want to donate to the park. It s so clean and well kept, I don t want to see a park like this decline because of limited funding.
Amazing place the redwoods are unbelievably amazing I highly recommend this place and explore all the routes around
big trees, beautiful forests, and a fern canyon. what's not to love?
Drove through and stopped by to check out the large trees and a herd of elk blocked the path while leaving. Very nice drive. Was once the only road through the area.
