Beautiful Gallery! A pleasure to walk around the pristine space, deeply respectful of the art it displays. Each piece is given the space it needs for the viewer to intimately relate to it without the nagging distraction of a descriptive tag, without the clutter of too many of people fighting to view it.

Fascinating gallery housing beautiful photography collections. It is free by appointment, and definitely worth it! The images are displayed blankly, however there is the option to purchase a booklet guide that gives credit to the photographers and their images. Overall a great place to marvel at for a while as the sounds of the Bay Bridge echo overhead.

Pier 24 has a great collection and the exhibition is well displayed- nevertheless as a photographer myself I was seriously disappointed over treatment at the reception as well at the telephone when I was inquiring to speak to the director for a moment. I felt it was unprofessional and extremely rude.

Such an awesome experience! The docents attend to one's every question and query. You must make reservations, however. And one should be aware that reservations often need to be made a few WEEKS ahead of time, so plan far ahead. This isn't the type of place you just drop in at. It's special.

This is quite possibly the best kept secret related to art in the entire Bay Area. A unique, tucked away location underneath the bay bridge, this is actually the largest exhibition space for photography in the entire world. Whodda thunk? A small nonprofit runs the space and limits the shows to generally only per calendar year. The work is hung free from wall text so that you engage with the pieces in a much more direct, personal way. The care they take is evident in all of what they do, from the publication of their exhibit catalog, to the relationship of each room to it's adjacent rooms, to the lighting levels... you won't find another space like this anywhere in the world. Oh, and did I mention that it's FREE? The mind boggles.

Great place to see unusual and interesting photography exhibits. Not far from the ferry building and right next to the Bay Bridge. Not open for months between exhibits. Attendance by online reservation only. Free. I think they're now preparing their sixth or seventh exhibit (August 2016). I haven't missed one yet. Have lunch at the ferry building. See the exhibit. Then take your own inspired photographs on San Francisco's captivating waterfront.

This gallery houses currently a exhibition called COLLECTED. They have combined photos from different collection from people based in the Bay Area. I enjoyed the exhibition and the information given within a book guide.

Unique photo gallery, they have a simple online appointment process for viewing which is free. Weekdays only and last appointment is at 3:15 PM, so that needs some planning.

The old state belt railroad tracks are visible on the right of the entrance where you announce yourself so they buzz you in. The tracks are from another era and it was incredible just imaging a train on those almost dilapidated tracks.

Smallish gallery and armed with a map it should not take more than 45 mins to go through all the exhibit rooms.

Excellent photography space, booking in advance is required, I did so on the day, space allows for contemplation and would allow an hour to view current collections. High quality documentary, portrait, photo journalism, filmic and a refreshing find to a while away a few hours under the bay bridge. Highly recommend

Just go! You won't regret and it will probably be the most fantastic photo gallery you've ever been too. Bookings only.
EDIT: be respectful of the time you book. A senior staff member gave me quite an attitude because I arrived 20 minutes after the scheduled time - despite the rain pouring down outside and the fact that the gallery was relatively empty. It was my third visit then. Haven't returned since.

This is a San Francisco gem. A stunning, massive photo museum that takes up all of Pier 24. It is the love child of an individual who grew a large well curated collection, rented the building to keep his collection in and decided it could be used to share his love of photography. They mount a new exhibit each year. Entrance is free. 20 people max have the place to themselves for a two how visit, so it feels like you are there alone. Reservations made online are a must. You gotta go!

Interesting collection of photos for this current exhibit. I like all the seperate rooms for each photographer. I'm still undecided on the book verses wall cards for the photos. I love the space.

This place is so under the radar. Most San Franciscans don't even know about it, although Pier 24 does photography shows that are the equal of SFMOMA and MOMA NYC. Here I've seen shows including Dian Arbus, Nan Goldin, Richard Avedon; and they also champion new works by up and coming photographers that are nearly always fantastic and high-caliber work. By appointment only! (Reserve a time online.)

I always have a lot of fun at the Art walk in DTLA .
Especially in spring/ summer :)
Me & my friend loves to get a henna tattoo ( I forgot girl name who does henna ) and just walk around and enjoy little shopping . Take Uber to get there because it's DTLA. especially when they having a event like this, you can't find a parking.

Excellent space to enjoy curated collections of photography. Guidebooks are provided so that information about each photograph doesn't detract from the aesthetic experience.
Negatives: collections change infrequently, and the gallery is only open during regular working hours.

One of the best galleries in the US. It's reservation only, so you never feel like you're in a mob. And the curators are top-notch, so you're guaranteed to see something interesting no matter when you come. They produce good catalogs for each show so there's always a chance to learn something new about the artists and their work. Finally, the location is great - right on the waterfront. You can easily find a great place for lunch or dinner nearby.

About Pier 24 Photography

Pier 24 Photography: A Haven for Art Lovers

If you're a photography enthusiast, then Pier 24 Photography is the place to be. Located on San Francisco's Embarcadero, this gallery provides a serene and contemplative environment for viewing photographic works. The gallery houses the permanent collection of the Pilara Foundation, which is dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting photography.

The Pilara Foundation was established in 2005 by Andrew and Mary Pilara with the aim of promoting public appreciation of photography as an art form. The foundation has since amassed an impressive collection of over 4,000 photographs from some of the most renowned photographers in history.

Pier 24 Photography was opened in 2010 as a space where visitors could view these works in a peaceful setting without distractions or interruptions. The gallery occupies over 28,000 square feet on San Francisco's historic Pier 24 and features state-of-the-art exhibition spaces that are designed to showcase photographic works at their best.

One thing that sets Pier 24 Photography apart from other galleries is its commitment to providing visitors with an immersive experience. Unlike traditional galleries where photographs are hung on walls with little context or explanation, Pier 24 Photography offers visitors detailed information about each work on display.

The gallery also hosts regular exhibitions featuring both established and emerging photographers from around the world. These exhibitions are carefully curated to provide visitors with a diverse range of perspectives on contemporary photography.

In addition to its exhibition spaces, Pier 24 Photography also boasts an extensive research library that contains over 20,000 volumes related to photography. This library is open by appointment only but provides researchers and scholars with access to rare books and publications that are not available elsewhere.

Overall, Pier 24 Photography is more than just a gallery – it's a haven for art lovers who appreciate the beauty and power of photographic works. Whether you're interested in classic black-and-white prints or cutting-edge digital images, there's something here for everyone. So why not plan your visit today?
