Got her at 5:30, dr seen me and prescribed needs and was done by 7:30, it is now 9:30 and I have been waiting for my meds longer than it took to see the dr, they say the pharmacy comes down every hour but haven't seen him since I've been waiting.maybe they need someone that can put pills in bottles.

Phoenix VA has improved and the staff does try to help save us old guys and gals, often from a lifetime of bad habits.
BUT, there are NO magic pills, and we all are lab rats. Yes, we were once lab rats as enlistees and draftees, and now 50, 60, 70 years later we are still basically lab rats for big pharma.
The staff does try and the squeaky wheel rule does apply. If you want more attention (and do we really deserve it?) for our pains, we must speak up.
I hope this does help

Another garbage experience at the VA. Represcribed the same meds that didn't work 4 years ago for the same injury from Afghanistan that the doctors here haven't figured out how to treat. On the upside I only waited 3 hours for the meds that didn't work in 2013. 4 years and I'm back to square one. I hope every doctor here is someday relegated to the same substandard care provided at the phoenix VA.

The staff is usually amazing here, but as s female combat veteran it's horrible that I have to drive to Phoenix hospital for a female clinic. I live extremely close to the Gilbert clinic but can't be seen because no provider can do a female exam..... I feel this is far from convenient or fair. And ridiculous part is the female clinic won't deal with your other problems at the same time. Little confused how these is great patient care. Think this system needs more restructuring.

I am a 100 percent disabled veteran from Vietnam and have severe pulmonary condition and I am on strong medications that have to be monitored closely because of danger to kidneys and liver. Have been managed and cared for wonderfully by a Pulmonary Specialist in my home state. Unfortunately, had to move to Arizona (ironically for my lung condition). When seen by my new primary care doctor in Surprise VA Clinic, I asked to have a referral to a Pulmonary Specialist in Phoenix. I was told to come back in 3 months and she would then consider a referral. I now have acute pneumonia and the doctor in Surprise prescribed an anti-biotic by phone but will not see me nor refer me to the Pulmonary Specialist. Although I was suppose to be covered 100 percent by the VA related to my service, I now had to buy private insurance to be seen by a medical doctor on the outside. Waiting 3 months to be seen is appalling and refusing medical treatment is beyond words; I would have been dead. Is this what national healthcare will look like; just postponing until the older folks die?

I know the VA has got a lot of bad press lately, but my experience has been very good. I got off active duty in 2015 with a lot of medical problems. I have never received better care anywhere in the world, as a civilian or 12 years of active duty, than I have at the Phoenix VA. I think a lot of Veterans in the VA Healthcare system don't know what medical care is like outside the VA right now, if they could see what the alternative is, and costs, they might gain a new perspective.

For Bertha:

For Bertha:
I had made a VA appointment a few months ago and it got rescheduled without my notice. After another failed attempt to receive care I was all out of options. I haven't had care in Arizona because I moved from Texas a year ago, and I can not deal with the hassle of bureaucracy and paperwork; ignorant desk attendants, changing care sites, waiting for something that takes 10 seconds to do. I decided for the umpteenth time to give the VA another try despite feeling unwelcome, well because I am getting worse and my girlfriend, heaven sent, is concerned about me. I called not expecting anything but grief but Bertha's attitude and professionalism helped me feel like my life is appreciated. She is a genuine, good-hearted person who walked me through step-by-step of how to get a provider, change providers, and get mentally evaluated. She gave me directions where to go and looked up multiple locations because I requested a doctor as soon as possible, the appointment changed from 46 days out to 20. What a huge difference one person can make. She was courteous, kind, respectful, and concerned about me getting care. I know a good person when I hear one and she is it. I hope this review can get to her (no way to send a review on the Phx VA website) as she probably led me on the right path to save my life.

Moved here in June 2016, had a few problems when we first arrived but once we understood one another things have been great. The Dr & Nurses are amazing. Dr Gilbertson in the Gilbert office is so good. He is such a wonderful & supportive Dr. We could never have imagined that we could find such a fantastic physician. We came from Cincinnati, they were fantastic. Give Phoenix a chance, they are trying. They hated all the bad publicity. Because some made mistakes, all suffered. Give them a chance & have patience. They are all trying their best.

If your looking for somewhere to go to be treated and talked to like a piece of trash by substandard medical personell just entering the work force or old washed up and waiting to retire then this place is for you.
People say its getting better but its not . When people screw up there are no reprecussions for their actions so they flat out dont care.
I would recommend either moving to a different state for VA care or just ending your life. Either one would be better than dealing with the people and care at this location. This facility more than earned the horrible reputation they have

Jesus Christ the people that work here should be ashamed of themselves. They have no manners, no empathy, no respect for the veterans that come in here. The fat girl at the check in desk in the emergency room is lazy and just sits back there on the phone laughing while people sit in the waiting room, ill, waiting an absurd amount of time to be seen. The emergency room nurses are unemotional hags that act like you're wasting their time by being here. This place needs a major upgrade. And I'm ONLY talking about the people who work here. Just a disgrace. I'm ashamed that our veterans have THIS sorry bunch caring for them. It's no wonder the VA has been in the news more often lately. I can only imagine how many poor souls have been lost thanks to this establishment

Moved here two months ago and have had the worst experience with my primary care doctor and her nurse practitioner. They don't listen to what I'm telling them, talk over me and ask the same question to get the same answer I already gave them. They have very poor attitudes and bedside manor. I'm not getting the healthcare I need to work on my medical issues. Complained to the patient advocates office to have him ask me what I wanted him to do with my complaint since in his words it didn't warrant investigating. I can ask the same question three different people and get three very different usually incorrect answers. I signed a blank check up to and including death when I joined the Army. I became service connected for disabilities in 2006. Our nation's Veterans deserve the excellent healthcare they were promised. If a medical professional in the VA can't offer the level of service Veterans deserve, then they need to be replaced with someone who cares. I've had excellent care at every facility I've been to except the Phoenix VA. Everyone here seems to pass the buck and push you off on someone else so they don't have to take the time to listen and help you get things sorted out or to give Veterans the service they deserve.

I have consistently received excellent service at the Phoenix VA Hospital. I have chosen to receive much of my medical care at this hospital rather than using non-VA providers. The doctors are proficient and they care about their patients. I am tired of hearing and seeing negative comments about this hospital and its staff.

I just started using my VA benefit in January. The care that I have received has be top notch. I was concerned that I would be seeing a different person each visit. I was please to find out they use a team approach, I see the same team each visit, my primary care provider is a Nurse Practitioner with an assigned MD. The team has a Pharma D and Dietitian. I would have awarded 5 stars, they one major problem that needs to be corrected ASAP. Parking is impossible

I usually go to the clinic in Gilbert, but I hurt my back and had to get testing done. They did x-rays, CT, and an MRI and they got me in and out of there as quick as possible without making me feel rushed or insignificant and everyone I spoke to was friendly and helpful if I had any questions or concerns. Good experience.

I have been going here since 18Nov2016 and I have always been treated with respect. No, I haven't always been able to get appointments within a week, but always in a decent amount of time.

Being a male to female transgender veteran, I am not always treated properly, but here, I have never had a problem with staff using the correct pronouns and supporting me using the correct restrooms. I have only had one person try and make a fuss, and the staff supported me 100% and said to the upset individual, "I'm sorry you feel that way, but if it's that much of a problem to you, maybe you would feel more comfortable getting your healthcare somewhere else."

Because I am mute (I am unable to speak), I get a lot of people pushing me aside because I can't "speak up" and they don't want to take the time it takes for me to write it out. The staff at the VA have always been patient with me and I have never felt overly rushed to "get it out".

Recently approved for VA Health Benefits and called for my first appointment. Was scheduled for July 30, 2013 some 9 months away even though I have a heart condition and this type of wait may cause me to be dead long before my appointment date. I was told this is due to a lack of doctors because so many have retired or just left the system. In addition we have a west side clinic in Surprise, AZ that now states they are no longer accepting new patients. What? The main hospital is 1 1/2 hour drive from me no matter how I get there. The VA Administration should take a look at what's going on out here in AZ because I'm sure we are not unique to the system and if it's happening here it's happening elsewhere as well.

I Started going here in 2007 it was absolute hell to get a primary or appointments. Over the next 7 to 8 years it bounced from ok to do not go here if you have an emergency or need help. I got transfered to the SE clinic and My 2 PC's have been awesome most of the nurses are nice and usually do not have to wait more than 10 mins to be seen if you have an appointment. However if you have to go to PHX VA for orthotics or prosthetics its a nightmare even with an appointment.

The Phoenix va health system is a disappointment s...

The Phoenix va health system is a disappointment starting from the top including the director of the hospital who is either aware or does not care about standard operating procedures. After years of medication now in quick fashion to save money for "my benefit " the va is making full disabled vets with epilepsy jump multiple hoops making it harder and harder to get medication that the veterans association has been prescribing veterans for years using drug test or blood test as a way to disqualify patients to cut down cost. Not sure if current presidential administration or who is changing policy to protect the dollar of big business. But it's unfair to the ones that really need it or can not afford to drive downtown multiple times a month at the drop of a hat. Medical marijuana was used as a tool but now is used as a way to take away benefits we have already served for. I have reached out many times to the phx va explained my story with no reply or compassion not sure what I served for.

Veterans languish, die on a VA's secret list

Veterans languish, die on a VA's secret list

Um...

(CNN) - At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list.

The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources.

For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care. But the new revelations about the Phoenix VA are perhaps the most disturbing and striking to come to light thus far.

Internal e-mails obtained by CNN show that top management at the VA hospital in Arizona knew about the practice and even defended it.

Dr. Sam Foote just retired after spending 24 years with the VA system in Phoenix. The veteran doctor told CNN in an exclusive interview that the Phoenix VA works off two lists for patient appointments:

There's an "official" list that's shared with officials in Washington and shows the VA has been providing timely appointments, which Foote calls a sham list. And then there's the real list that's hidden from outsiders, where wait times can last more than a year.

Deliberate scheme, shredded evidence

"The scheme was deliberately put in place to avoid the VA's own internal rules," said Foote in Phoenix. "They developed the secret waiting list," said Foote, a respected local physician.

The VA requires its hospitals to provide care to patients in a timely manner, typically within 14 to 30 days, Foote said.

According to Foote, the elaborate scheme in Phoenix involved shredding evidence to hide the long list of veterans waiting for appointments and care. Officials at the VA, Foote says, instructed their staff to not actually make doctor's appointments for veterans within the computer system.

I had my first disability appointment today after waiting 6-months. My appointment was at 0700 in the Topaz clinic. The doctor called me in at 0702 because the receptionist was late. The doctor made a few entries into his computer and said your all done no need for any follow ups go to the window and check out. I was handed a travel pay voucher @ 0715 with directions to the travel pay window. Upon arriving at the window the sign said " go through the door take a ticket and have a seat". Well the door was locked. A women came by scolding me like a child "we don't open until 0800". She was nasty like someone pissed in her Cheerios. They need to do a better job checking their attitudes at the door and posting their office hours.
Never want to go back there!

It s just terrible how the staff treats our veterans. I walked in to the pharmacy only to witness a staff member snapping at a man who was only trying to ask her a question. The look on his face was that of utter embarrassment and humiliation. This place is disgusting and the staff member didn t care that I was standing there witnessing her rude behavior toward this older gentlemen in a wheelchair. HE S A VETERAN FOR PETES SAKE! Something needs to be done regarding the piss poor treatment of those who fought for our country and now need medical care.

Tonight I had to go into the emergency room for my service connected back pain. Since I had just moved to the area, I was worried about what to expect with the check in experience. I was registered with ease by a really polite staff member working a busy ER evening by herself. And in just under 2 & 1/2 hours, I was seen by the nurse, the doctor, treated, had my prescriptions in hand and was out the door. The doctor even went a step ahead to make sure a PCP was requested for me in my doctor's orders for a follow up since I'm new to the Phoenix VA system. For the last 15 years I've been in the Southeast DC VA hospital, and more recently the WEST LA VA hospital system for my care. I have to honestly say that vets here in Phoenix should consider themselves lucky to have a VA that has the quality of service that this one does. It is hands down 5 stars compared to the others I've been unlucky to experience. I know that results can vary, but I also believe it starts with YOU. Remember it's a government run system, these people are doing their best with what they're given, and there's a lot of injured vets out there to care for. So start with a smile even if it hurts, have some patience, be polite and most importantly remember, it's not ALL about you! Cheers.

At the VA right now. They're slow but they are doing their job. There's so many veterans that need help and they are trying to help each one but they can only do so much because they are understaffed. The Government need to hire and train more individuals who are willing to serve. I personally am grateful that they even exist.

Have had a REALLY tough time with the VA lately. T...

Have had a REALLY tough time with the VA lately. There have been a few improvements after months on end of stress, phone calls and emails.

Had a bit of a slight rough start with an ER Doctor tonight. Probably because I have excessive chart notes due a very complex and chronic issue. I also think they may have been slightly perturbed because I was in the ER. However there is where my PCP team directed me to go.

I give the Doctor a lot of credit for at least hearing my out and taking the time to througly explain some things to me. It's ironic the I got a bit more attentive care hear that with my last several PCP'S.

It's really sad the an ER Doctor had to take the time to be more involved than my Primary Care Doctor's. I guess they are pressed for time.

However only giving a Veteran 30 mins time for a first time visit with Primary Care seems a bit hasty in my opinion. They need to hire more Doctors or send more Veterans out for Community Care or something has to given.

It isn't fun feeling like your pitted against the Medical Staff just in order to try and get proper care.

Still a tad bit frustrated with the Director's Office Staff and some of the Patient Advocates not seemingly following through on a few of my requests even after several months of efforts. I've been under severe stress and sleep deprivation because of my situation. Many things have been well below expectations, even for the VA.

I'm sorry I really wish this wasn't the case. I'm not deliberately looking for things to gripe about, sincerely.

I've just really been frustrated by the level of difficulty I've had with trying to get some care needs recently.

Praying to God my records can be corrected and that things will keep getting better.

I REALLY REALLY appreciate the ER not playing games with me and making me wait for several hours in the lobby just to be seen.

Their level of professionalism and understanding made me change my rating from a 1 to 3 rating. It was a 5 previously.

However overall the past few months have been almost pure Hell with trying to get my care needs met. I don't say this lightly.

The process for Community Care is insanely difficult and tedious at times.

Thank You thought for trying to make a serious effort with me as of recent.

My problems first were the experts at this place. I seemed to get PA's or Docs that were just ass holes all the time and didn't really care. they always were trying to prescribe instead of treat systems and it was always see you next year we can't help you. I received a new doc last year and he was awesome, but he was also former navy seal so of course he is going to care. Now I call, cant even make a simple appointment told me to call back in an hour. If veterans are suppose to have access to care 24/7 we should be able to make an appointment 24/7 because in all honesty when you call the nurses there with "symptoms" they are going to make you an appointment to see the doc anyways, or say they left a note for you clinic and you will get a call with in 24 hours only to have to call them yourself again in 48.

This is the worst VA center I have ever been to. I came here because while out here in Arizona on vacation I lost my inhaler so I came here two get a replacement this place had me register with them then told me to go to pharmacy to pick up my inhaler. Got the pharmacy and was told by Pharmacy that they don't have any documents showing that I have an inhaler. So I was told to call my Hospital in California and to request the prescription to be sent to this office got a hold of the folks in California and they said of course my information would not be there because I am registered with California and that they should have looked up the Nationwide prescription logs rather than a local log so apparently that goes to show they don't know what the hell they're doing so after all this three and a half hours of dealing with this still no inhaler finally I was told by a gentleman just go to the ER and do it that way because you will be here at this place forever they don't know what they're doing at all and now I can clearly see that horrible Place beware

Appointments for serious issues can take weeks and they always try to shove you off into small local clinics which are ill equipped to handle them and will prevent you from receiving continuation of care. Will never go back to this underfunded cesspool. The entire VA system is a sham and is only there as a proxy to give the appearance that this country actually cares for its veterans.

So I just got off the 5th floor my first experience with this VA I didn't care much for it. The thermostat in my room was not able to be changed and it blew freezing air constantly I slept with 3 blankets and 1 around my head I suffered every night and I informed multiple staff on multiple occasions room was not fixed . There were a few nice nurses but I thought the staff overall were unfriendly and had sour faces. I will not be going back there I'll find another VA if I need that kind of help again. 9-18-17 I've went back there multiple times lol. I stayed in the same room and it was very comfortable and the nurses were very helpful.

If I could give this place a negative rating I would. It s not about health care here, it s about control and power. The absolute contempt of the senior leadership and the medical staff with few exceptions is appalling for lack of a better word. I could write volumes about the horrible experience I have had at the hands of these horrible people both as a Veteran receiving care here because I have no other choice and as a former employee who resigned after being bullied and threatened weeks prior to the Director and other senior leadership being relieved or resigning in Feb 2014. CNN, the OIG and the FBI got it wrong, because they wanted to get it wrong. Smoke, mirrors and political BS. This place should be shut down and burnt to the ground. Not surprisingly it is built on top of the unmarked graves of Native American Children who were murdered by the staff of the Indian School right next door decades prior. This facility is cursed and if you value your life and have any other option you will shun this place. They literally ruined my life and tried to kill me and they will never lay a finger on me or unlawfully detain me again. Everything I have just said is discoverable (counselor)!

Can I give zero stars? You have some stellar employees who are trying hard but as a whole, you are still failing our veterans. Shape up or ship out. I think you need a complete overhaul to ensure that you are caring properly for the men and women who have cared and fought for us voluntarily. Bottom line...you guys suck. Fix it. Getting an appointment there is a freaking nightmare. If you need a specialist, good luck. You guys are a horrible mess. Even the 5 star reviews say they have a hard time getting an appointment! They are pleased with the caring people who are helping them! I am not a vet but I love many who are close and all who fought for us. I have been dealing with you guys for a loved one and after working in privatized medical care for 15 years, I am shocked at the incompetence, ignorance, lack of care and ambition and just over all disregard that has been extended to these patients. Shame on you!

I usually am seen at the Southeast location in Gilbert, but I had to go to the Phoenix location for neurology. I had a morning appointment, it took me almost an hour to find a spot to park. (Due to my ignorance of the area, I was unaware that there was an offsite parking garage/lot) I drove around and found a spot to park, finally! It was a lucky break.
The hospital was packed, it was like an airport. The staff members seemed bothered by the fact that I didn't magically know my way around. I asked for help a couple of times and I was answered by both employees in a grumpy manner. The staff members seemed more interested in socializing or treating patients like they were a nuisance than actually being helpful. There needs to be more staff, or less patients. And since the patients who come here are kinda sorta required to, they need to fix the staffing and facilities issues.... and quick.
My doctor didn't see me for some time. Given the amount of people there, I wasn't surprised. I can understand being swamped. My doctor was awesome. He was very attentive and spent almost 45 minutes with me, trying to figure out where my migraines where stemming from. I over heard him telling a nurse he'll be working though his lunch break again just to catch up on patients. He's the only reason why this place is getting any stars.
I have to go back there for a followup and I am dreading it.
