I went there on an evening organized on Valentine's Day. The whole thing was truly spectacular, they made us first see the stars through a telescope and then they took us in a sort of globe in which all the constellations were projected on the walls. It was really suggestive, even if in that precise evening the lines were long

With its neoclassical style it represents an exceptional example of the Neapolitan architectural artistic heritage. But the position where it rises allows you to enjoy one of the most evocative views of Naples! It seems to be in another dimension.

Today, with primary school pupils, fifth grades of the IC Romeo-Cammisa, of Sant'Antimo, we visited the observatory. Beautiful experience. Thanks to Professor Gennaro of the observatory. Exciting to watch the Sun through the telescope. Thank you

For a long time I wanted to know the observatory in Naples, finally we went and I must say it exceeded all my expectations. The historical charge of the scientific to the stimulus unit building I hit a lot and my old passion for the stars and the universe has asked me to find new outlets ... I would definitely go back

Fantastic place to "know" with a long and fascinating history. Wonderful interior museum full of instruments of observation of the past. The telescopes are breathtaking you often have the opportunity to use them with the techno-scientific staff, staff of international level. In the efficient auditorium halls, conferences, debates or simple "explanations" for the less expert are organized periodically, on curiosity or new topics that the research proposes. Not forgetting the unparalleled view of the city and the Gulf of Naples.

Beautiful ... always reminds me that while in Naples they looked at the stars and we were European capital of culture and science in Milan they tried to survive smallpox, tribal wars and famines ...

Last June I attended an event at the Osservatorio about Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe with my 3 sons. I was positively surprised to see that the parking was well organized. After entering the park in the observatory I noticed a statue of Gagarin and wondered what was the connection between an astronomical observatory and the first man in space. In any event, the presentation was, using my 17 years old son, underwhelming. We also asked if we could tour the annexed museum, and were willing to come at a different time; a nice lady try to talk with the professor responsible for the observatory, but he claimed that the observatory was a research center and not a museum. The whole purpose of our visit was the tour of the observatory as claimed on the ticket that we purchased. Never mind! The only positive aspect was the capability of looking, through small telescopes, at Jupiter and its moons. For the rest, una noia totale!

The Museum of the Observatory is everything touris...

The Museum of the Observatory is everything tourists hate about museums in Italy. The information on the website about visiting the museum is not accurate. The bus line listed to the observatory has a typo. The line is c63 from Piazza Dante, not the r63 given on the website. When you get to the stop in front of the Museo di Capodimonte there are road signs to the observatory, but not the museum. When you get to the entry gate, there are still no signs about the museum. The gate guard only speaks Italian and knows nothing about the museum. After he made a few futile phone calls he tells me the museum is closed, even though the website says it is supposed to be open. And so he sends me away and I never got in. I went to the Museo di Capodimonte instead. If you try this visit yourself, be prepared to be turned away, but you can go to the other museum instead so your time is not totally wasted. However, the Museo di Capodimonte is an art museum and not a science museum so you may not be interested in that one, but there is a nice view of the city and the bay of Naples from the grounds. The bus ride from piazza Dante was about 20 minutes. You get to the piazza on metro line 1. I had to wait 40 minutes for a bus to return to the piazza.

The charm of the knowledge of a starry sky that allows you to experience an incredible emotion, that of being able to see the past by living the present. How many questions that take shape with the upturned nose, how many discoveries and how much to discover. Endless.

The astronomical observatory of Capodimonte is loc...

The astronomical observatory of Capodimonte is located in a suggestive location, the Miradois hill, a hill close to the palace of Capodimonte. It was the first structure designed and built as an observatory, at the behest of Gioacchino Murat, the works ended in 1819.
Today the observatory is the seat of the Neapolitan section of the National Institute of Astrophysics, INAF, the main Italian body for astronomical and astrophysics research from the ground and from space. The Observatory of Naples is involved in major research areas of modern astrophysics in collaboration with universities and other national and international institutions. At Capodimonte they study the Sun and solar system through the analysis of cosmic dust and construction of tools for key space missions of ESA and ASI. With the observations made to the large telescopes of ESO, located in the Atacama desert in Chile, we investigate the life of the stars, from their formation to the last evolutionary stages characterized by the great explosions of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, these associated, in some case to the emission of gravitational waves. With the observations of satellites we study the physical properties of extreme objects such as neutron stars and black holes, while with research on the evolution and dynamics of galaxies we understand the properties of dark matter. New generation instruments are designed for the large telescopes of the future such as E-ELT.
Finally, the Capodichino Astronomical Observatory also houses the only public astronomical museum in central-southern Italy open to visitors, the "MuSA" (museum of scientific instruments); which also contains a library, with ancient texts, starting from the middle of the 16th century, works of art, prints, drawings and paintings. The Observatory is open to the public through organized events and conferences, for a guided tour of the museum, and for visits to the new planetarium, one of the largest in Italy by diameter of the structure.

A beautiful structure, a beautiful Neapolitan reality that I confess I didn't know (many attempts at events but always failed). Yesterday a beautiful and magical evening organized by Wine & thecity with lots of conference and degustation of wines and sincerely delicious foods. Treccione di Mandara, finger food, pasta timbales, sweets by the famous Capparelli and Kimbo coffee with ice cream with coffee cream of course .. a real genius !!! A beautiful evening, with active telescopes to watch the moon and specialized personnel x information ... sin in small part ruined by the really cold temperature (for our semi-spring clothes) and in large part by a really unseemly initial waiting for those like me it was cold for 45min. before the start of the conference. Question: but the doors open at the beginning of the event (yesterday even a little later) or guests are received, if anything in great discomfort, even a few minutes before ??? Official excuse: we are not ready !!!! Help.

The observatory is one of the oldest and most pres...

The observatory is one of the oldest and most prestigious of astronomical institutions in Italy. It is situated in an extensive park which is itself an area of great natural beauty. Though the reality of light pollution in a modern city places severe limitations on observation in the visual part of the spectrum, the observatory makes a great effort to involve local schools and the public of Naples in its activities to popularize astronomy. Visitors should be aware, however, that this is a working observatory with significant technological investment in computer technology within its structure, and so access to the museum and to the wider grounds is only possible on days, indeed evenings, in which public events are organized. Such events are fortunately organized frequently on many evenings during the year, thanks to the scientific and cultural commitment of the observatory's director. Talks are given in Italian (resources do not yet permit translation) and recent events have included a history of the exploration of Mars, the use of 'gravitational lensing' to understand the universe, the discoveries of planets beyond our solar system, and the frontiers of our knowledge regarding 'dark matter' and 'dark energy'. Every effort is made to pitch the level of talks between that of a beginner and those who have more knowledge of the subject. All talks are followed by the practical possibility to observe the night sky above Naples, courtesy of the telescopes and commentary of the volunteers of the UAN, or Union of 'Astrophiles' of Naples. Details of events can be found on the Facebook and web pages OACN and UAN. Visitors should be aware that the bus service C63 is not as frequent as other bus services in the centre of the city, though improvements have been made. Taxis can be taken for an affordable cost (around 10 euros one-way) from the centre of the city) and many buses go to the Capodimonte Park, from which the Observatory can be reached after a 5-10 minute walk. Car parking is also available within the grounds, though places are limited so those interested should arrive early.
