About Old Croton Aqueduct

Old Croton Aqueduct: A Historic Site in New York's Award-Winning State Park System

Welcome to the Old Croton Aqueduct, a historic site located in New York's award-winning state park system. With 180 state parks and 35 historic sites, the park system offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages. From campsites, beaches, and golf courses to hiking trails, historic homes, and nature centers, there is something for everyone.

The Old Croton Aqueduct is a unique attraction that offers visitors an opportunity to explore New York's rich heritage. The aqueduct was built in the mid-19th century to bring fresh water from the Croton River to New York City. It was an engineering marvel at the time and played a crucial role in shaping the city's growth.

Today, visitors can walk along the aqueduct trail and experience its history firsthand. The trail runs for 26 miles from Croton-on-Hudson to Yonkers and passes through scenic landscapes and charming towns along the way. It is perfect for hiking or biking enthusiasts who want to explore nature while learning about history.

The aqueduct also features several historic structures that are worth visiting. These include gatehouses, weirs, spillways, bridges, and tunnels that were used to control water flow along the aqueduct route. Many of these structures have been restored or preserved over time thanks to efforts by local communities.

One of the most popular attractions on the Old Croton Aqueduct trail is Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown. This Gothic Revival mansion was built in 1838 by former New York City mayor William Paulding Jr., who also served as one of the commissioners responsible for building the aqueduct. Today it serves as a museum showcasing American decorative arts from 1790-1860.

Another must-see attraction on this trail is Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where Washington Irving (1783–1859), author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820) rests alongside other notable figures such as Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919), Walter Chrysler (1875–1940), Elizabeth Arden (1884–1966) among others.

Visitors can also take guided tours or attend events organized by local historical societies or Friends groups dedicated to preserving this important piece of history.

In addition to its historical significance, The Old Croton Aqueduct has become an important natural resource providing habitat for wildlife such as birds like bald eagles which have been spotted nesting near Ossining Reservoirs; fish like bass which thrive in its waters; turtles like painted turtles which bask on rocks near spillways; mammals like beavers which build dams along streams feeding into it among others species found here making it ideal place for birdwatching enthusiasts too!

Overall if you're looking for an escape from city life while exploring your natural environment then look no further than The Old Croton Aqueduct!
