The Old Croton Aqueduct is a unique attraction that offers visitors an opportunity to explore New York's rich heritage. The aqueduct was built in the mid-19th century to bring fresh water from the Croton River to New York City. It was an engineering marvel at the time and played a crucial role in shaping the city's growth.
Today, visitors can walk along the aqueduct trail and experience its history firsthand. The trail runs for 26 miles from Croton-on-Hudson to Yonkers and passes through scenic landscapes and charming towns along the way. It is perfect for hiking or biking enthusiasts who want to explore nature while learning about history.
The aqueduct also features several historic structures that are worth visiting. These include gatehouses, weirs, spillways, bridges, and tunnels that were used to control water flow along the aqueduct route. One of the most popular attractions on the Old Croton Aqueduct trail is Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown.
