One star is just for the animals and their care. I've never experienced such rude people in one day. All the restaurant staff and gondola loading people were super rude and ghetto. I guess they don't have very many choices since it's located in Oakland.

Beautiful zoo with an excellent assortment of animals that are very obviously well taken care of! The ride up to California Trail offers spectacular views and even more cool animals. This zoo is great for people of any age and isn't too expensive. Staff all seem to love working there and are knowledgeable and helpful. Definitely recommend spending a day here!
The Oakland zoo is fairly well maintained. Some of the animal's habitats seen smallish (giraffes, chimpanzee's) . Only one elephant out at the exhibit. The gondola ride to the California trail was the highlight of the entire trail experience. It did have quite a bit for smaller children to climb on . The Australian train ride was worth the extra money. This zoo is on the lower end of the spectrum for Adult customers. I would rate it higher for children who like rides and diversions.
Very nice zoo, only reason i didn't give 5 stars is because in addition to paying the zoo entry fee, if you want to see the bears, or wallabees, kangaroos you have to ride the train over to see them which is an additional $3 per person.. other than this inconvenience i really enjoyed my time spent at the Oakland Zoo
Outstanding place to entertain the family especially your children. A great place for them to learn about animals from around the world also there's a section for children to ride cars airplanes and roller coaster plus a train ride that's the best around where you can see kangaroos and emos crossing the tracks in front of you. The restaurant just inside the gate has exceptional food including a children's menu with seating inside and outside. There are other attractions such as the sky ride and a cable up to a restaurant on the mountain that has very high ratings. Along the way you pass over Buffalo kangaroos and other animals what you see from the air. There so many species to see it's too long to name here.
What a great place for a weekend gateway with family and friends. All the animals are very healthy and well managed. They also have very friendly staff around, and a well mix of mammals, reptiles and birds, and of course bugs. The only downside is the parking space constraints , and the place can get really busy over weekend and expect to spend quite sometime to find parking spot.
Haven't visited in years. It a a nice small local zoo with hand sanitation station through out. They have a gondola car to reach the back part of the zoo as you can't walk and they sanitize the cart after every guest and everyone must sanitize hands before entering. Felt safe and the park was enjoyable with time entry
I was there at the Oakland ZOO 9-19-19 @ 11:00am to 2:00pm healthy living festival's events for seniors healthcare thru Alameda county health systems over 100 vendors for seniors only and different information booths to care for seniors healthcare things we needs to know to better ourselves if live along or by our self, but in the future I will try to get to the Oakland ZOO restaurant and ZOO for the animals this seniors healthy living festival events was a one time only until next and never been to any thing like this before so that you Alameda county for health to surport the seniors in the bayarea county
Best zoo i have been too! Lots of things to see here. And the new california trail was great the food was not so great though. The food area was too crowded where people were couldnt have a place to sit and the food was expensive and not to good quality.
Nice place to take the family. However doesn't even hold a candlestick to the San Diego Zoo. Not even close. I only mention because I read a review saying the Oakland Zoo was better than the San Diego Zoo... Not even a candlestick. ..
Facebook page said open. We took a 2 hour detour to get there, only to find them closed. They say they only close in inclement weather. It was 51 degrees and misting. Their definition of inclement is odd.
The Oakland Zoo is absolutely one of the best zoos in the Bay Area. It is clean, well laid out, family friend, well kept and fun. It is apparent that the animals are well cared for and a lot of thought has been put into their habitats. It is very easy to spend the entire day walking this spacious zoo.
All of my life we have been coming to the Oakland Zoo and my memories of it are from childhood to adulthood are wonderful and precious. We have take nieces, nephews and now grand-babies here.
The Oakland Zoo is a Bay Area Gem and it promotes wildlife education and conservation. If you go to its website you can access their wildlife cameras and watch the Sun Bears, Black Bears, Elephants and Condors live. It is an excellent place to spend a day relaxing individually or as a family and build your own special memories. This is a must do if you are any type of animal lover! Don't miss the train ride, merry-go-round or especially the Gondola/Sky-Hi ride that gives you spectacular views of the SF Bay Area. We love this Zoo, its animals and the team of people who make this place so magically wonderful. Enjoy!
My four year old daughter has a blast at the Oakland Zoo! The place has improved since the last time I have been there. The only downside is the rides, unfortunately they didn't have enough staff on hand, so we had to wait for one person to leave one ride to operate another ride. I will be coming back very soon fingers crossed we won't have the same problem. Fun times and beautiful animals!!!!!!!
Amazing selection of animals and rides. My son loved watching giraffes, lions, elephants, zebras, monkeys, camel and other animals. He also enjoyed the mini train to watch emu.
A family favorite and great for school outings. Costly, but beautiful gem in lower Oakland hills near 98th exit off 580. Beautiful grounds. Picnic areas, snow building, and few classes are offered like summer camps 4 kids. COOL RIGHT?
We love visiting the animals with our daughter. It's small enough to see everything in 2-3 hours but large enough to have a good variety of animals, which are well cared for. The gondola is amazing, with spectacular views of the bay, and the new California Trail is beautiful.
This zoo is beautiful and great to visit year round. There is a ton of shade on hot summer days and a great new play area for kids in the new California Trail area. They have lots of benches to rest while you view the animals and several spots to eat if you bring your own picnic lunch. Food and rides at the zoo are pricey but the proceeds all go back into the zoo and their many charities so totally worth it.
Fun for the whole family. Plenty to see so plan on spending a least 4 hours. To see everything you would need 6 hours. Oh, you should bring your own food and drinks, it's expensive at the zoo.
I had to walk everwhere,,, they need golf carts for free use. My hip hurt because of the elephAnts. When I was trying to think,,,the stupid birds made too much noise
A local and small zoo in Oakland. You can see the regular animals here, e.g. lion, tiger, giraffe, zebra and bear... It spend around 3 hrs to visit all the area. There will be an extend area at summer 2018, you can expect of it.
Thank you for taking such good care of the animals. I know I can count on Oakland Zoo to keep my kids smiling. The animals always look happy. It's more like an animal sanctuary. I'm a vegetarian and I support Oakland Zoo. I know many vegans that do as well. They've added a new deli center at the top of the rise ride. It's a great cafe with healthy foods. There's a restroom up there as well. Upon entrance to the zoo there's a gift shop, bring a few extra dollars, support the animals and staff.
Went to the Zoo on Saturday. This is a very beautiful Zoo we love the terrain and how well kept it is. I was really disappointed at how crowded it was. I felt really uncomfortable at how many people the Zoo let in at once. It was very hard to social distance because it was that crowded. I did appreciate the staff cleaning the high touch surfaces and keeping the Zoo clean.
Excellent environment for little ones to explore and connect with nature, bugs and animals and the Hayward fault line. The animals look healthy and relaxed. The zoo is little hilly, provides a little cardio for the adults accompanying the little ones.
Sooo many childhood memories here.. This little local zoo is very fun for a kid.. The zoo is small but perfect for knocking off a couple of hours to make some good memories with the kids.. Down the hill is also a park beautiful Red woods and a small playground.. I love the location of this Zoo
Surprised at how great this zoo was. Parking was a... zoo, but that's be expected on a Sunday with nice weather. We really enjoyed the elephant exhibit, the Gibbons, and the orangutans. Plan on spending a couple hours to see all the animals.
I worked at the zoo for a while in college and loved it. Today I went back for the first time in years with a group of students with my current job. It was enchanting to see the animals again and watch the kids interact with the exhibits. They all had a blast and so did I! This place is so special to me and so many of the folks around me. I feel extremely lucky to have this incredible resource in my neighborhood, and it s one of the gems of the Bay Area.
We couldn t see many of the exhibits because we had to wait over an hour for our food. Even worse, the staff rushed the meals after many were complaining about the wait and served undercooked food. Two people in my family who ate the burgers got horrible food poisoning and were throwing up the rest of the day. I m very disappointed with our experience here and I hope the others who also ate the burgers today don t end up in the hospital.
Fun urban zoo nestled in the Oakland hills. Great for kids, parents and grandparents. When you tire of the animals, the views of the Bay will take up the slack.
