I adopted my dog from there about a year and a half ago (Milo). When I found him (or he found me!), I asked about him and was let into a room with him. He was scared, depressed, and shaking. I decided right then and there that I would adopt this dog. When I told the volunteer this, she tried to talk me out of adopting the dog. So much so, that I started crying! She was not going to let me adopt this poor dog that fit my lifestyle perfectly. I was told to foster him for 1-2 weeks prior to adopting him to make sure that I could handle it.

Things worked out perfectly with Milo. He is amazing and I couldnt be happier with him-- and he is so happy! However, I do think that the folks working there could use an attitude adjustment. But PLEASE help these dogs (the facility is great, though) even though the people running it are hard to deal with. If you tell them with enough conviction that you want that dog, they will let you adopt.

We just adopted a wonderful dog here, and all the staff involved in the adoption were great to work with! Everyone was very helpful and kind, and it was clear that everyone here truly cares for the animals they work with. The facility is also very clean, and the animals all seem well cared for. I would not hesitate to adopt another animal from NEAS in the future!

I have been reading all the reviews on the NEAS website. Some people just do not understand. I read all the negative comments and I can absolutely see why they did not receive the pet at that time. What is wrong with people! These poor animals come to a shelter sometime from such tragic experiences. This is not about you, it is about the pet. All I hear is I, I, I! These counselors are trying to find the best home for these animals. My daughter and I adopted a scared puppy a year ago from this shelter. The people were friendly but cautious, the shelter was spotless. They asked us many questions and yes we were permitted to adopt our beloved Bella, she is the joy of our lives. I am so happy that they are cautious it is in the best interest of the animal and anyone that loves animals should know this! I am thankful to all the people that donate their time trying to place these animals in the right home! Bless you all. Bella sends her love!

Love this shelter and the staff. They are very knowledgeable! If they refused to give someone a pet, its for good reason. They work hard to place the pets in good homes. I will always support the shelter and their work.

We went to this shelter hoping to adopt a dog for our family. When we first arrived the receptionist wasn't very friendly but told us where to find the dogs. We looked around at all the dogs then waited to talk to one of the counselors. We told the counselor what we were looking for and she told us there were a few dogs we could meet. The first dog we met we weren't very interested in. Then the second dog was very sweet and very calm and the counselor told us he wasn't showing much interest in our son (1 1/2 years old) because he wasn't interacting with our son other then getting the ball when our son threw it. Then they brought in the next dog and we LOVED her. She was great around our son and we felt like she was the one. The counselor asked if we'd come back again to make sure she was the right fit with our son. I came back the next day to see the dog again with my son. This time the dog was more energetic and right away the counselor said she wasn't a good fit anymore. I personally disagreed but the longer I was there the more apparent it become I wasn't going to be able to adopt this dog. It also felt like I was being talked down to and spoken to as if I had no idea how to take care of a dog or what a dogs needs are.

My main problem was that they seemed to think a dog that was calm wouldn't be a good fit around my son and a dog that was energetic also wouldn't be a good fit.

I'm very comfortable training a dog and taking it outside for play time to get its energy out, but this shelter felt as if they didn't want me to adopt a dog at all. My goal was to adopt a dog and give it a loving and caring home. A home that's capable of feeding the dog, getting all of its medical needs, getting lots of play time outside and with other dogs. Unfortunately it seemed the counselors weren't open to a family with children under 5 years old adopting a dog at all.

We got our lovely kitten from here a few weeks ago, we arrived just before opening and were queuing to get in and it took nearly 3 hours from entering and choosing our kitten to leaving, which wasn't ideal with needing to take our small children. With hindsight we shouldn't have gone on a Saturday!
The staff were lovely and helpful but do be prepared for a wait, take drinks and snacks and if you can avoid the weekend do.
It would be great if you could schedule appointments, there were a lot of people waiting and the animals got chosen quickly. I don't know if this is usual or we just chose a popular weekend.
The facility is clean and the animals all seemed happy and healthy.

Rude, patronizing, and unhelpful staff, hardly any animals yet they're STILL euthanizing healthy animals when they stay too long? Something sketchy is going on here. I'd love to see the profit margins of this privately owned "shelter".

NEAS is excellent! I don't have enough kind words in my vocabulary to articulate my feelings about this shelter. Everything didn t go as planned for us, as our adoption was complicated by some health issues. It was a stressful and difficult situation but the staff at NEAS were fantastic. They went the extra mile for us and our new recue pup, it will never be forgotten. Thank you NEAS from the bottom of my heart!

I tried calling this place multiple times, over the course of several days, and they never picked up their phone. This was about a week ago. I also left a message, and never heard back. I saw a dog online that I loved, and wanted some more information on. I would've just gone in to ask, but I live over 2 hours away. It's sad that they won't even return a call. The dog I was interested in, Duke, still shows as available on their site.

If you go on a weekend be prepared to spend the entire day at Northeast Animal Shelter. The shelter is chaotic, overwhelming, and poorly ran.

See a dog you like and want to meet them? Wait an hour and a half.
See two dogs that you like and want to meet them both? You can only meet one dog at a time.
Have a dog at home and want the animals to meet? They're not allowed inside and they have to wait in the car for who knows how long.

It's hard to know if you'll connect with a dog just by seeing them in a cage. But not sure I want to waste 2 hours of my life to meet a dog only to find that they are not a right fit for our family or we're not a right fit for them.

My advice: Go to another shelter or speak to a rescue. We have had good luck at MSPCA. They are friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. See a dog you like? Take them out for a walk around the premises. already have a dog at home? They will watch him/her at the front desk while you take your new potential dog for a walk. If it's a match a volunteer will set up the meeting process.

Does it still take a bit of time? Yes. But do you have to wait an hour and a half before meeting a dog? No.

My daughter's family adopted Geraldine (now Bella) a few months ago. They had a very positive experience. Bella is the most well behaved dog we've ever had. She is also so gentle with my two Maltese who are much older than she. It's so fun to watch them play together. Thanks for letting us have Bella!!

We had a fantastic experience picking up our dog! Daniel took us through our application process and through the eventual adoption. It only took a couple hours from the meet and greet to walking our new family member out the door! The kennels are well maintained and all of the staff seem to be professional and experienced. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend the shelter to anyone!

Our experience at NAS was wonderful. My boys and I went in on a Saturday, (which can be really busy!!!). We found our love, Reily, and brought her home. It has been an adjustment, but nothing we can't handle. We, like others, were asked a number of question, (not an interrogation, as some might suggest) and given time to visit with Reily. Our counselor felt we were a good family for her. It has been happy ever after, although the counselor did send an e-mail I did respond to, but she did not respond back (?). None the less, it saddens me to think that many have perceived judgement against them in relation to owning a pet. Why didn't they ask for a second opinion, or a manager. In some cases, it's better to ask for a second set of eyes instead of getting mad. If that person sees the same thing, than maybe wait a little while.........

Was surprised to see how busy this place was upon opening one Saturday morning, but once our 2.5 hr visit concluded, I understood why. They take to time to fit you with the right pet. The animal counselors' goal is to make the right match for the animal and the prospective owner. Everyone we encountered was kind, very caring, and genuinely happy to be doing what they were doing. Great experience, and highly recommended.

No one answers their phones to let you know there is a ridiculous wait time to adopt a pet and then are extremely rude upon arrival. Will not recommend. I read other reviews that say during the weekdays it is not much better, so using the weekend as an excuse is a bad one. You won't adopt too many pets turning people away and that is honestly a shame.

Response: Perhaps you should hire more staff, because you clearly need it.

Went looking for a puppy for my son who i would love for him to grow up with a dog! I stated that i had a previous dog with a previous relationship the dog wasn't spayed which was not by choice. They wouldn't let me adopt the dog all because my past dog wasn't spayed even though it was 7 years ago and no longer lives with me. "they said policy doesn't matter how long you've had the dog if your dog wasn't spayed we cant promise youll spay this dog" i waited 30 minutes to see this dog. I came here because my friend had just adopted from them and gave me high hopes of adopting the dog today! awful awful experience.

We went in there the other day to take a look at the dogs they had and wow they had so many great ones!! I really wanted to take a bunch home with us but we ended up with two!! (to our surprise!).

We adopted Tim and Shelly and I'm so glad we did. They are small and medium size so it worked out great and now they play together all the time!

The facility itself is great. They have rooms where you can sit and play with the dogs and we even got to take them both outside in the pen to see how they would get along.

The staff was very friendly and helpful and I give kudos to all of the volunteers there helping to take care of all the animals and helping them find good homes. If you go there looking for a dog block off some time because it might be hard to choose! I would recommend this place to go.

After spending over 3 hours with the dog i knew for a fact i wanted to adopt (his name is max) I was told to sleep on the decision and then call back the next morning. I called and spoke to Janice and she was literally nothing bus discouraging. Said that Max was a terror and that he had a real dark side. Said he did all these terrible things and that he probably wouldn't be a good fit for me. There are no children in my home, I can come home mid day easily, and have a fenced back yard. When i finally convinced her that I knew what I wanted to do she made me a vet appointment for 5:20pm...when I told her specifically only 10 mins prior that i get out of work at 5pm and knew she wanted me to fill out even more paperwork before stopping at the vet. She acted like I had inconvenienced her SO much, huffed and puffed, and then said she'd call them to try and rescedule. She didn't call me back for about 2 hours and then it was just with the news that somehow all the appointments had now been booked up. I stated I would still go by the shelter to see Max because at this point I really doubted Max was getting any love or attention (although the 3+ hours i spend with him were 100% peaceful and lovely). I got to the shelter and was told i wouldn't be allowed to adopt Max, just was't going to happen, because he's so bad and turns on a dime to attack people.... They then insisted that i look at other dogs (they had just gotten about 30+ in from Georgia). I looked around but the only dog I wanted to visit with was Max. At this point, someone else was visiting with him. I tried to go back on Friday after work and at noon Max was still available for adoption and by 4pm he was adopted and gone. I am BEYOND frustrated and sad after this truly terrible experience at NEAS and have heard from literally everyone I've talked to that this shelter is sketchy and that the staff often discourage people from adopting more popular breeds so that they can save them for friends or others. It's truly disgusting that Max had to wait so long for a loving home when i was ready and happy to take him home on Wednesday evening or Thursday even. I'm still going to adopt a dog because I know there are plenty out there who need a loving home. I will NOT be going back to NEAS just so they can tell me I don't know how to deal with a 13 pound dog who sometimes nips at people because he was neglected for his whole life. The whole thing is so disturbing and I don't think I've ever dealt with someone as difficult as Janice, especially while i was trying to provide a loving environment for an animal who deserves it.

I came at 2.45pm to speak with someone about an animal and I was 4th in line. It was 6.50pm and I was still 4th in line. These people are very busy and will not hesitate to schedule you even though it is obvious that you will not be seen that day. We recently went to adopt a kitten or cat three times. The first time we went the cat we wanted was being kept for observation and they would call us and hold the cat. That never happened, never recoeved a call, so we went back again and tried to find another cat but we got there they told us they were no longer doing adootions that night, although i witnessed them tell another family they would take them. Even after this we returned a third time and the only one cat room was open that had zero cats and when we asked if the other room would open no one knew anything about and one of the ladies at front rudely reponded "I dont want to know" . Seems to me they have rude volunteers and staff who are far from helpful. It shouldnt be this difficult to adopt a cat. We are never returning there and we are just going to buy a cat from a breeder

i wanted to get involved to help my local shelter ...

i wanted to get involved to help my local shelter by offering to foster a dog in my house, i have experience rehabilitating rescues and was in a good enviornment with several animal lovers living with me. i filled out an application online and talked with several of my friends who foster dogs in their house, noone said anything about a fence. when i drove down to this shelter to talk about the process, the woman at the front desk was incredibly rude and demeaning, she mocked and ridiculed me for having the audacity to come and apply if i didnt have a fenced in backyard. i tried to explain to her that i m a dog trainer and that that s a loophole i can and have gotten around, and in my years of experience having a fence is not a non negotiable requirment in this field. but she continued to insist that it was. disheartened, i applied to be a volunteer at this location since at the end of the day all i wanted to do was help the animals. it s been months and i havent heard back on the application, so i m guessing she manually rejected it. this entire experience made me so sad seeing as my entire childhood i would come to this shelter with my parents frequently to visit the cats and spend time with the animals, but it looks like at the end of the day the staff isnt really concerned with the animals wellbeing. if you have any experience whatsoever with animals then you know that a loving home will always be a better option than a 24/7 cage with infrequent outdoor time. i feel bad writing a review, but i think its important to let anyone who s looking into fostering: 1. the staff are very condescending and rude 2. according to the woman i spoke to, they only need foster homes for puppies that have JUST been rescued. (this makes almost no sense, but i didnt question her in the moment. i have plenty of friends who foster senior dogs for the sake of freeing up room in the shelter for other dogs, which saves lives in the process...) 3. if you dont have a fence in your backyard, and apply regardless, the staff at this shelter will take that as a personal attack, and mock you for even trying.

About Northeast Animal Shelter

Northeast Animal Shelter: A Haven for Abandoned Animals

The Northeast Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization located in Salem, Massachusetts. It is one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in New England, providing a safe haven for abandoned and homeless animals. The shelter has been operating since 1976 and has helped thousands of animals find their forever homes.

The shelter's mission is to provide a loving and caring environment for all animals that come through its doors. The staff at Northeast Animal Shelter works tirelessly to ensure that every animal receives the best possible care while they are waiting to be adopted. They believe that every animal deserves a second chance at life, regardless of their age or breed.

One of the things that sets Northeast Animal Shelter apart from other shelters is its commitment to being a no-kill facility. This means that they do not euthanize any healthy or treatable animals, even if they have been at the shelter for an extended period. Instead, they work with local rescue groups and other shelters to find homes for these animals.

The shelter offers adoption services for puppies, kittens, cats, and dogs of all ages and breeds. They have an extensive network of foster families who take care of animals until they are ready to be adopted permanently. This allows them to provide individualized care for each animal while also freeing up space in the shelter.

In addition to adoption services, Northeast Animal Shelter also provides low-cost spay/neuter services for pets in the community. This helps reduce pet overpopulation and ensures that more animals can find loving homes.

Northeast Animal Shelter relies heavily on donations from individuals and businesses in the community to fund its operations. They offer various ways people can donate such as monetary donations online or by mail; donating supplies like food or toys; sponsoring an animal's medical expenses; volunteering time as well as hosting fundraising events throughout the year.

If you're interested in adopting a pet from Northeast Animal Shelter or want more information about their programs/services offered please visit their website www.northeastanimalshelter.org where you can view available pets online before visiting them during open hours which are daily from 10 am - 8 pm except on major holidays when closed.

In conclusion,

Northeast Animal Shelter is one of New England's largest no-kill animal shelters dedicated solely towards providing abandoned pets with love & care until finding them permanent homes through adoptions & fostering programs along with offering low-cost spay/neuter services within communities it serves.
Their commitment towards being "no-kill" sets them apart from others by ensuring healthy/treatable pets aren't euthanized but instead given another chance at life.
They rely heavily on donations & volunteers' support which makes it possible for them to continue serving communities around Salem MA area.
