How disappointing this is the face of animal rescue for Douglas County. They do not represent what true animal lovers believe in yet they still grow financially and ultimately more powerful. I believe their philosophy strays from the true love of animals.
Very friendly, love what the do to help the animals get adopted
Got my girl here, and I bought a few things from their store. Very kind and knowledgeable staff and volunteers.
My wife and I got there early to adopt an English Bulldog, we stood in line for a half hour and when we got inside my wife filled out the application...... When she turned in the application we both asked if the dog was still available and we were told yes and to have a seat until my wife's name was called. We waited another half hour and no one came, they adopted out the dog while we were waiting...... NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! This kind of BS is why people shop and don't adopt.
The mountain lion fiasco cost them a star. If they repeat their wreckless and inhumane recommendation to kill I will withdraw all future support.
The best thing about the Nebraska Humane Society is that the number one priority for all personnel (staff and volunteers) is the animals. They make the process of adopting easy and simple, while still being very thorough and thoughtful of each animal s needs. When considering the purpose of any shelter/rescue, the main point should be to help animals - and that s exactly what the Nebraska Humane Soceity does.
Brutus died scared and alone! You wouldn't let me stay with him until the end then you threw him on a pile of strays and torched it! I told you I was going to take his ashes home! You KNEW us!!!
9/6/18 update:
This angel with a tail deserved better. I STILL have nightmares and his brother shakes uncontrollably if we even pass by in a car. He was more than a pet, he was a part of my heart. I can't feel him, he's lost and he died thinking he wasn't loved. I NEEDED to bring his ashes home so he could find us. He's lost and he may never be at rest.
We were forced to surrender our two beloved cats who were both under the age of 5 because our baby was allergic. We had adopted both of these cats from NHS in the first place. Both were declawed, house cats who loved adults, babies, dogs etc. The NHS 'humanely euthanized' aka killed our cats immediately upon receiving them. I highly doubt a behavior assessment was even given at the time of surrender. We purchased them from the humane society to begin with..meaning they had passed the prior 'behavior assessments'. I will never step foot in this murder zone again.
My roommate adopted a cat from here in July. a cat the had been given up a few times for non troubling reasons only thing against him was not good with children which is fine no kids are in our house. He is a pretty affectionate cat but would kinda bite at random and talking to the vet we tried to work through it and keep him, 3 months later and he just wont adjust. so we try to surrender him to the humane society and because he has bitten someone he has to he quarentined, so this cold woman (wish i had gotten her name but she didnt even introduce herself but she was a lead) just sat down, did the paperwork, and said okay its 168$ you have to pay for the quarentine. so we didnt have the money, and she was like well you have to sign away your cat, and my roommate tried to just keep the cat and she wouldnt let her, said no you have to sign away your cat and wouldnt let her keep him. she gave us a number that we could call to maybe waive the fee and the woman on the phone said no because we had the cat for longer than 30 days. So because we tried to make it work, we are being charged 168$ that im sure some bill collector will call for while my roommate is bawling her eyes out after giving up a cat she tried so hard to love, its not her fault the cat is agressive she has had 5 cats over the years.
so the moral of the story is dont try to make it work, return your animal in 30 days. Never getting an animal from here again.
We took a lost cat into the shelter on 4-19 because we felt it was the best thing to do. We told them we felt it was a pet because he was so sweet and friendly and was told he would be put in the holding area for 3-7 days and his picture would be posted for potential owners to claim him. We got attached because we had been feeding him, however, we knew he needed a family to take care of him.
His picture never got posted, we checked the website daily. We drove back to the Humane Society and asked the front desk girl where he was, she looked up my name, initially she said because we are in the middle of kitten season and remodeling, we are shipping cats out to other shelters so they can get adopted soooner. My daughter who has a HUGE heart kept asking questions and the girl then said, I cannot give out any information, when you dropped the cat, you signed a form that says you are not able to get specific info on the animal. Because we didn't like that the cat's picture was not posted for the owner to potentially claim him, we wanted to take the cat back and take care of him ourselves, again especially when we found out that they did not even give an owner the chance to see if he was at the shelter.
The people who work at this shelter are not friendly and do not answer questions correctly and don't portray any compassion toward (in this case) people who took the time to bring in a lost cat to the shelter.
We sincerely thought this would be the best for this cat, our hearts are broken and it's very sad that we took the time to drive back to the HS and inquire where this cat is and they completely did nothing to set my daughters mind at ease. It ruined our day and has left a bad taste in our mouth for the Omaha HS for we both are animal lovers and truly wanted to know where he was for we were ready to take him back, to take care of him.
We will NEVER take a lost/stray animal to this shelter. I know they do alot of good as well, however, they need to have professional people whether volunteer or paid, the people need to be accommodating to the public and compassionate to everyone who walks through the doors. We've donated numerous times to this shelter as well as have 3 rescue animals of our own, so do our part.
Perhaps the HS needs to update their policies and procedures and in this particular case, the desk girl should have gotten a supervisior/manager to help us, but instead kept repeating the same thing that she obviously was trained to do.
This impact that is made on my teenager daughter is not a positive one and that should not be the case.
Side note: The neuter/spay clinic is not a good place to get your pets taken care of, we tried it and did NOT have a good experience, we learn from our mistakes.
Don t bother calling to inquire about adopting a pet, they won t call you back. Unfortunate because a pet could ve been placed into a good home.
They're very kind and do all they can to help animals.
Got this wonderful sweetheart, 9 yr old Joe, the staff is always nice and helpful, and unlike certain places they do truly care about the animals here, i strongly recommend getting yourself a pet from NHS
This is a bad place. But go figure, funded by our taxes. Damn shame.
I wonder why the Humane Society doesn t let us bring our dog to see the dogs up for adoption. They told me to leave my dog at home before coming, but how I will know which dog will be friendly to my dog if they have never met? I will go somewhere else to adopt.
this place is awesome, they are very clean and they care and respect the animals , I adopted a very cute dog there and i just love her , thank you NHS
the building is confusing to get to also it's very expensive to adopt anything and you have to jump through so many hoops it's ridiculous
Due to lack of kennels during construction, the Humane Society reduced their fees from several hundred dollars to $50 for dogs - a great deal.
The kernel workers go beyond to make sure that the candidate dog is a good match with the household adopting it.
The staff was helpful but I could not find a dog to rescue me.
Gone multiple times to save a dog just to get rejected. Kids to small or fence not tall enough, dog is to big might knock a kid over. They have a fear if pitbulls/pit mixes. Sad someone cant take a chance on a dog and possibly save its life.
had to license my pet. staff is alway nice and helpful.
Make appointment to adopt shorter staff due to covid
My daughter has had a couple of cats that turned up missing and the HS was great about explaining to her the procedure of finding her cat....that's IF you can get them to call you back!! Leaving a message is the only option you are given.
Update: we just adopted a cat from the Humane Society! His name is Arthur and he is an angel baby boy. He was left in their overnight drop area with no information, so one of the staff named him Arthur. The Once and Future King was one of my favorite stories as a child, and he already seems to recognize the name. It's very apropros.
The adoption visit was scheduled due to COVID. Their vets cleaned his teeth (deep cleaning, root scaling) and tested for FeLV as well as vaccinating for FVRCP and rabies. He is 7 years old. With another, hopefully, at least 10 years of living ahead of him as a cherished indoor cat, we are very grateful to have found this sweet boy to join our family.

Our squirrel looked like he had fallen out of his tree last night and wasn't able to climb back up. By the time I found him, there were already flies crawling on him but he was still breathing. The animal control officer who came to help, J Johnson, was very kind, and gentle with the squirrel. He obviously cared a great deal. Ultimately we were not able to save the squirrel but it was good to see how much they cared!
We adopted our puppy there, had a great experience, and now we are taking the puppy training class, highly recommend for anyone with a dog!
Always wonderfully nice people to work with in the shop.
I often see the Humane Society have commercials saying there is a great need for people to adopt dogs.
My wife, adult daughter and I have all put in applications and each of us have not received responses. Even a no answer would be better than being ignored. Perhaps the need for new owners is not that great.
Very unorganized and inefficient. I filled out a survey like they have everyone do, which included all of my information including ages of children. I then spoke with two employees about my circumstances and the dog we wanted to meet. I came back later at adoption hours, like I was told to, and waited for two hours to meet an adoption counselor. Once my name was called, the adoption counselor told me I couldn t meet the dog because I had children. Why did no one tell me this the first time I came in and filled out the survey for that specific dog? Waste of time. I appreciate what they do for the animals but they are ran very poorly.
My dog was attacked a week ago. I have called at least 10 times to file a report. When the Humane Society came to where the situation occurred they did nothing to the two dogs that attacked me and my dog. I have left so many messages it s ridiculous and nothing was done to the owners of the two dogs or the two dogs themselves. Even while the Humane Society employee was there to check out the two dogs they attacked another dog walking with its owner. I have filed a police report and done everything I possibly can to get information about the owners and the two dogs. Disgusted with how the Humane Society has responded.
Dropped off old blankets & towels for them. Always friendly & appreciate donations.
My girlfriend just adopted a dog from here recently; and throughout the adoption process our confidence in the knowledge, good intentions, and care the employees expressed toward the animals waned with each hour we waited throughout our time there.
Our dog received a neutering his first day as a "humane society animal" meaning he had to spend 3 days in his own urine and manure before they could conduct any treatment for "legal purposes." After his neutering the staff members failed to implement ways to prevent the puppy from licking his wounds and further infecting them.
Not only this but the apparent "walks" the employees take the dogs on obviously don't include any sort of care or well-being measures being conducted for the animals, as any one spending even 2 minutes with the dog alone would notice how frequently he licked his neutering wound, and his need for a cone as any good puppy would need.
In the adoption room the employee who was adopting out our dog knew nothing about the dog's personality except a very brief basis they do which is about as in depth as a middle school history project. My girlfriend and I were the ones to notice the dog ever so frequently licking his wounds, and after a good 30 minutes they finally had time to "re-assess" him only to find they wasted their time with the first surgery and needed to clean out the infection that ensued after his constant (and understandable) licking of the wound.
After she picked him up, she made a sweet comment about the dog being like a person and very sweet, at which a volunteer claimed that the animal was simply an animal. Finally, we were given no time lapse as to when to take off the cone for the puppy or any information as to the healing process for the poor animal.
Overall I give you 1 star, as I have to give you some rating, but I an thoroughly unimpressed with the measures conducted at your facility. Your name, and your building is all you may have, but you better believe I am going to warn every one I know who is considering your facility as a means to adopt an animal. I won't say the animals won't need adoption, because to be honest they do, they need to get out of your poor facility and away from your "caring" staff members who clearly have little to no customer service, nor much animal care experience prior to their hiring.
I thoroughly hope that change may be implemented in the Nebraska Humane Society, as ever since I was a young boy my family has adopted from the organization. I am sorry if this review seems harsh, but I have to be entirely honest to hope for any sort of change to be instilled into this poor excuse for an adoption agency.
I've rescued most of my animals from here. They seem to take great care of the animals before they are adopted. I would recommend this to family and friends. Wonderful selection of kitties and dogs.
We had a scare with our small dog. He snuck out of the house behind my 13 year old son. I went to walk through the kennels of the lost and found. They were clean and the staff was very compassion and understanding. My "guide" even spoke baby talk to some of the dogs as we went through...he very clearly loves his job and animals!
Don't attempt to adopt if you live in an apartment. No other metrics matter beyond that one.
Love the selection of dogs. The wait is frustrating.
Nebraska Human Society does a wonderful job trying too find a forever home for unwanted animals. Love NHS
They had a perfect match for me!!!! Sams the man!!! Yhey helped my with training and health with sam the only place ill go with my pets...
Best place ever to find a new family member. Meet ours his name is Joseph
Front desk person did not give correct information. Wrong open time on this particular day.
I'm not sure why, but the Spay and Neuter Clinic never answers their phones and when I dial the operator I'm put on hold for about 15 minutes and then I'm told there's nothing they can do about it.
werst survis gate cat help got me my perfit cats 100%.
Very helpful and friendly. Very kind as I went and returned so many days in search for my lost dog. It's still missing but the humane society has assisted me along the way. Thank you
Great place to volunteer or rescue a new family member
The vets and nurses were really nice and accommodating. The only thing that wasn't cool were the people who didn't follow the nurses advice to leave their pets in their car while they check in and pay for the services. Those people made it a nightmare while a dozen people filed in small room for check in. With that said, the nurses were amazing and they cut through all the commotion to focus on me when I was up and they were even done earlier then they said they would be.
They were nice. We adopted a beautiful t year old chihuahua named Cinnamon.
Took our 5 months old puppy to the Spay and Neuter Clinic to be neutered. Inexpensive yes, but you get what you pay for. Impersonal process, staff was not overly friendly, a bit uncaring even. No contact or consultation with the vet, no update on how things had gone. If you are a protective and caring pet owner, this place will not be for you. I will never use this clinic again.
They need to lower the cost to adopte the anamils. So people can take them home.
The process took a very long time, I spent like 4 hours there. But it's okay because I went home with two very loving cats:)
I'm not that old but I can tell you that I've gotten my fair share of animals from this shelter and they do a very good job of telling you off the bar what the best environment for each animal is. They also do a great job talking about temperament of the animals as well, so pay attention, these men and woman are usually pretty good about this
They have the cutest animals and great staff. I just don't like the fact that in order to get pets you have to see which ones you are compatible with.
Had a tour with my daughter's girl scout group. While I was surprised at how long the tour was definitely felt that they were not prepared for her age group so had to spend a lot of time explaining things to the girls.
My visit was not a happy one, not for anything they did..just a sad day. But the staff was kind and respectful and very helpful.
Good place to get your pets tags and to get adog and cat
Wish I could get a pet... ..I just made a donation that visit.
Great place....very helpful......and the workers rock....
The love for all animals were definitely felt & seen while I was there.
My family & I were looking at dogs online. We met a dog we really loved. So we filled out the paperwork & waited 3 hours & was told that we couldn't adopt because we don't have a fence. Never heard that in my life.
Ps
The dog we wanted was not a threat or even aggressive!
Construction is making it harder for people to find their furever baby, but be patient and look for the purple arrows. Fingers crossed construction will be done in April 2020. Beautiful lonely pups, kittens, turtles, rabbits you name it and they have one needing a good home. The volunteers are amazing playing music for the babies but they do have a lot to do. If you have questions ask them, they're more then happy to help.
We have adopted several wonderful personal from NHS. I appreciate how hard they work to make good matches for their animals. My latest was a wild puppy and they included puppy obedience class to give us the best possible chance at having a long wonderful life together and, so we are.
We donated empty medication bottle for them to send pills home with the adopted pets.
What more can I say other that I met my best friend and companion there, a dear little Yorkie mix dog. I'm so happy. They have a pet supply shop and discounted used items.
Was looking at a beautiful puppy online and went to see her right at noon and filled the paperwork out, just to find out she was on a medical hold with no estimated end date, and there was no notice online or on her kennel about her status. There was never one put up before I left either. Other than that people were nice along the way.
