Always worth a visit with regularly changing exhibitions, both free and paid for.
Beautiful classical and contemporary works are displayed here.
I regularly visit here and always enjoy it.

Went to the Cindy Sherman show at the NPG...expensive but so well done. The NPG is such a great place to visit any time of year.
Wonderful pictures of the great Mamters, impressed me, Holbein, van Gogh, Lukas Cranach, Brugel, Renaissance paintings, Michelangelo, Rafael, Leonardo da Vinci, works by the Impressionists: Degas, Monet, Manet, Toulouse de Lotrek, Gauguin, Pissaro, Cezanne and others .
Incredible showing of the Pre Raphaelite Sisters. Don't miss the Elizabeth Peyton exhibit.
Wonderful portraits some old some new all beautiful in there own way
Beautiful paintings undoubtedly, but the 20th century deserves to be enlarged, a little short I think.
Beautiful museum, worth visiting. Free, supports donations.
Great place many fantastic art pieces and some great pay for exhibitions that are worth the money
British history being brought back to life
Many portraits of the monarchy, and famous Brits and those who have made a significant contribution start down at you. Often sternly.
Lots of information about last 400 years of world. Nice to see in portraits.
The one nice thing about these paintings is one knows the subjects (well most of the time) YOu can't get all your culture from yogurt so this is a nice balance especially if in covent gardens (especially if it is raining around trafalgar square)
I'm not arty but I have been twice and will definitely go again
An excellent collection of works, well laid out in chronological order, allowing one to see the development and change in style over the centuries. A very entertaining diversion for an hour or two, and worth regularly revisiting with the changing exhibitions.
One of the best art galleries in world, def a must visit!
Good museum about history of England's key players through portraits. Free admission. Gve yourself 1-2 hrs to tour. EXCEPTIONAL restaurant and great lunch spot woth views of London. 26 GBP 2-course lunch that was excellent with great service.
It's a cool place to see portraits of famous and we'll known pictures
Love the National Portrait Gallery, as it contains illustrations and photography from various stages of history. Would definitely attend yearly and recommend this museum to those looking for British art free of charge.
I thought it was pretty cool. I didnt see the michael Jackson exhibit tho so that might've made it better for me. Overall tho cool with lots too see from yesteryear to today.
Quirky, very British, high quality of work on display
Loved the MJ exhibition, totally love the NPG too. Really nice staff and so much to see!
The National Portrait Gallery provides a vast opportunity to explore the elements of the history of England via art. The size is quite deceptive as it is grand once you enter inside. The staff are friendly and helpful for what appears to be a tiring job. The different eras are labelled though with such a lot to cover it can still get a little confusing to navigate. There are some interactive elements, but more may be warranted. Particularly, for younger visitors. This perfect for a rainy day or to gain insight into British history. Well worth a visit.
I love the Portrait gallery, tons of inspiratinal stuff. Had great fun spotting people getting how look similar to the portraits and then posing for me.
A wonderful collection of portraits with many well known figures on display stretching from the 15th and 16th century up to modern times. Would have appreciated it more If I was British or if I had thorough knowledge of British history because I only knew about half of the portraits on display but still I would recommend it.
Wonderful free art gallery with additional pay-for exhibitions. Loses a star for being sponsored by big oil company BP.
Beautiful and insightful portraits . Free with suggested donations. Great restaurant on roof top.
Excellent collection. Very well curated, one really feels as though they connect with the art and the individuals depicted. The modern Britain section also fascinating, especially with Johnny Ive
It has lots of good stuff:
1. George Romney's Emma Hamilton
Lovely, calm atmosphere, an air conditioned oasis in the heart of London.
Perfect for sketching.
Wonderfully redesigned since my last visit. The large escalator means a 30 minute visit is possible and positive
Lovely gallery of portraits spanning British history. Nice cafe downstairs too and good shop for souvenirs.
Great collection with a lot to see but not as overwhelming as the National Gallery.
If you go to London do not miss the chance to visit this gallery
Very rich, colorful and strong informative experience. See all the historic figures and stories/ events come together in a single place
Free entrance and good to study portrait. You can see works from the best to the "worst" periods of paintings as such almost every famous artist in art history.
A place where history and art converge in a way unique to the genre of portraiture. It's interesting to think about how the subjects are portrayed and what criteria for inclusion the museum uses. Where else can you see multiple portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and a portrait of Ed Shereen? It's also fun to play the what-historical-figures-can-I-recognize game.
Exquisite and interesting. Portraits were my least interesting art subject, until I came here! The history that these paintings expose to you help explain people and their significance in the world we know today. From the very historical, to the contemporary, it presents a view of people in a way that is so unique and personal. Forget Instagram - visit this incredible gallery!
Really cool exhibit especially the Michael Jackson exhibit, staff is very accommodating as I have seizures and one video had flashing strobe part so they helped me get through it while it wasn't flashing and even let me stay in a private area while it was flashing
Really worth a visit, when the BP portrait competition is showing. A lot more eclectic. Some are painted so exquisitely, that they look like photos.
One of the most beautiful museums I've ever visited .... a must for art and history lovers
One of the best gallery in London. Audio guide along with the pamphlet helps a lot. There are some good paintings from wide range of artists
Always a pleasure. What beautiful works of art and all free!
The exhibitions where to a high standard enjoyed my visit, good location and easy to travel to on a main road and the gallery was busy. The gift shop was well stock and full of customers I brought a few items the prices where a bargain.
nothing really to add, a place you have to see in London, unforgetable
Just a wonderful gallery ! Don't miss it, the National is great, but it's better here
Excellent time there, need to go back to see what I didn't see on last 2 visits.
Could easily spend hours and hours here!
Free exhibitions as well as some visiting exhibitions which you have to pay for. Prices vary
Ask at info desk for directions to the 20th century gallery.
Limited range of contemporary art, but enjoyed the (paid for) photo portrait exhibition.
Overshadowed by it's more famous neighbour, this wonderful gallery is pure fun and informative. In particular the contemporary portraits are really interesting.
Being that I'm not British I couldn't really connect with the people on the portraits. We just needed to get out of the cold rain until dinner time.
Love it here, very informative, beautiful paintings
I'm not overly interested in art but really enjoyed just having a wander around
Went on 4th date with my now boyfriend, it is small enough to be able to take everything in without being overwhelmed. 1 hour to look around is enough.
Well worth an afternoon. Found the Victorian gallery less crowded than the contemporary one. Also wins big points for lots of benches scattered about the place.
Very interesting museum to know about recent history of the UK.
Been here so many times, whether for exhibitions or just to have a wander. This is my favourite gallery in London!
