Linda with works of the great masters of painting ... I could see the famous sunflowers of vincent van Gogh among others ... and all for free different from other famous galleries and museums etc.

So many artists so much to see and all for free though a suggested donation is asked but not mandatory.

As always, a captivating gallery. Filled with portraits of humanity, seen through the eyes of painters, photographers and sculptors. Ever changing, always something fresh and engaging to see. Lovely staff and a great cafe downstairs.

Free gallery, situated next to National Art Gallery. Good for solo visit, or with children. It does what it says on the tin.

Whenever I am in London I visit The National Portrait Gallery. This is much less known to the general public than The National Gallery, but both buildings are intertwined. They each have separate entrances. In The National Portrait Gallery you take a journey through the time of (as the name says) portraits. Ranging from a video clip of a sleeping David Beckham to the Portraits, Stationary portraits of the houses Tudor and Stuart. I think this is a pearl. It's best to decide yourself. If you don't like paintings and portraits, this is not for you.

Love this place. Really interesting film presentation and audio commentary about Monet's life. Facilities here are top notch. Excellent bookshop, range of cafes and restaurants.

Treasure trove of art with shifting special exhibitions.

Really enjoyed the visit to National Portrait Gallery.

Not only was it free, however, it was nice to see that a campaign was sponsored by a billion dollar company such as British Petroleum.

I do hope that large corporations will follow in their footsteps and encourage people to take up art and showcase this art to members of the public for free.

Brilliant collection with equally interesting exhibitions, all spanning a wide range of styles, themes and eras.

Good for a quick visit. Can get crowded with is small rooms & narrow paths.

One of my favourite Fine Art Museums in London, of course focussed on portraiture through the ages with excellent temporary exhibitions. As with most British Museums it is free, so always full of students sketching and tourists gazing at the wonders within. It has a lively bustling atmosphere and I have spent a lot of time here.

Visited the David Hockney exhhibition which was simply amazing.

Love this gallery. Beautiful building, great exhibitions, good book shop & very nice cafe. If I did have any criticism it'd be that I'd like the contemporary exhibition to be a lot bigger.

Went to see the Micheal Jackson exerbition was amazing

Fabulous! Not just great art, it's a walk through history. Fabulous way to spend part (or all!) of an afternoon.

Pre Raphaelite sisters exhibit is wonderful. So many connections. Models of famous portraits are revealed. Packed

As ever a wonder to walk around, plenty to see although a little too busy for my liking.

It is just an unbelievable repository of our history and culture. Should not be missed.

Never been before and wasn't disappointed... what a tremendous place

The Tudor gallery is very interesting with paintings of Elizabeth I and her coutiers. Also contemporary portraits including Ed Sheeran so something for everyone. Excellent visit.

Very interesting art and a great chronical of history. We toured the whole place. Well, at least the free part.

A nicely arranged collection of portraits showing leading figures in British history. The information about each person is extensive and well written. As a foreign visitor, I learned a lot of history.

Great works of art on display. People were sitting there honing their skills.

Very detailed exhibition that shows practically all of English history

A beautiful museum full of portraits of characters that have made history, not only from Great Britain, but from the whole world.
To fully enjoy it, it would be necessary to visit, with a guide in hand (or through Wikipedia) a room a day to fully understand who the characters are portrayed and their historiography.
What a tourist cannot do for obvious reasons .. and then run across the halls, taking a quick and distracted look at paintings and statues.

If you have children, it's a good idea to take them with notepads and pencils and let them sketch :)

Learn some amazing history through some amazing art

Fabulous gallery - free exhibitions as well as ones with admission prices. Could easily spend a morning or afternoon here.

Fabulous exhibition on Hilliard and Oliver Exquisite pictures

Unfortunately I can't rate it because I just passed it. But a visit is already tempting

Gorgeous building. And of course absolutely steeped in history. Wonderful exhibits.

Prefer it to the National Gallery as it's less crowded. The audio tour is excellent and great value for money as well.

Love Portrait Gallery, was going to gallery to find suitable drawing class for my daughter, unfortunately there was none available, apart from drop in session.

my favourite gallery of my trip to europe!!! absolutely amazing if you enjoy painting yourself- you can truly appreciate how masterful all of the works are.

the artworks in the gallery are divided into eras and you can walk through in chronological order. i loved the information given before entering each art era as it was easy for anyone to understand, and allowed everyone to draw meaning from the context of the artworks.

the BP portrait award exhibition was absolutely incredible. unfortunately i only got time to visit the free exhibitions however i wish i could have gone to cindy sherman.

Hadn't been for years but my partner expressed desire to go and we really enjoyed it. Best bit was meeting football legend Bobby Moore's daughter as she was checking the exhibition of photographs of her famous dad!

This is a great place and after forgotten about as it lies literally in the shadow of the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square. We popped in for a short visit to see some of the photographic exhibition and modern lives exhibits which were excellent. Heard that it is now closing for 3 years for a major refurb - hope it will be worth the wait

Went to see the Cindy Sherman exhibition - under 25s can get 5 pound tickets on a Friday.

Often overlooked in favor of the National Gallery, next door, this fascinating museum tells British development through portraits. There are pictures of kings, queens, poets, musicians, artists, thinkers, heroes and villains from all periods since the end of the 14th century.

The National Portrait Gallery, is a lovely museum to stroll around for a few hours. They have a broad collection of art, beautiful things from all over the world. Personally, I really liked all the paintings with animals and flowers, which they have a lot. Besides the art, the historical building of the museum is really impressive as well. The staff was very helpful and of course it is always nice that the museums here are free to enter. I would definitely recommend the portrait gallery if you re just in London for a few days.

Great gallery in central London. The huge permanent collection has thousands of famous paintings and the special exhibitions are often great. Check out the BP portrait competition when it is in to see the best in contemporary portraiture. The cafe is nice if over priced... don't miss the portrait of Catherine Middleton it is horrendous!

I love this place. It's huge. The atmosphere is almost mystical. It's relaxing and soothing almost. Great experience.

Great place a bit smaller than expected but a fun two hours none the less

went here with the kids and mother in law for my patners bday. it was lovley. he was given a free drink and a birthday plate with a lil cake on it. that was very nice of the staff. all staff was so welcoming. it has nice views of London. seated at the window or not

Beautiful museum with important paintings .. For art lovers the top .. And then it's free ... at the entrance they require an offer but it is optional ..

I only went to the Tudor department (I am very interested in Henry VIII) but it was great.
