If you are interested in art and history, this place is a must. Remember that the portraits are witnesses of that time and that they say much more than they show. I suggest reading a bit about the portrait genre in order to better appreciate the exhibition and avoid seeing hundreds of paintings that all look the same, they are not

An excellent gallery right in the centre of London. A great range of portraits from classic through to modern and it s absolutely worth visiting during the summer when the year s Portrait Award winners are displayed.

Pre raphaelite sisters exhibition is excellent showing how the muse were so much more and the sisters did it for themselves. Of course a visit to the gallery cannot be taken without a visit upstairs to meet all of those names we know so well.

Really can't rate this anything other than 5 stars - and I'm not even massively interested in art. Completely free entry and an great selection of paintings over the last few centuries

I like the combination of free and not free access to the various exhibits. The free ones encourage me to go in but then, when I'm hooked, I'll pay to go into one of the special exhibits which are usually worth paying for.

London's museums are free. Only this invites us to meet them. But they are also very interesting and beautiful.
The National Portrait Gallery is an excellent museum to enjoy the art of portraiture.

Can't believe I've not been here before. Absolutely wonderful display. Like all the older galleries it is in a beautiful building and it is nicely laid out. Fun to wander through 20th century and try recognizing people.

A penetrating meditation on humans and portraiture. The parade of faces and gazes is hard to shake from the memory. A one-of-a-kind museum experience. A worthy destination for visitors to London and locals alike.

(Sadly, not open Christmas Eve, as Google might have you believe.)

National Portrait Gallery is an art gallery in London, St Martin's Place, which opened its doors in 1856.
The gallery is designed for portraits of important personalities from the history of Britain, sheltering, besides paintings, a large number of photographs, sculptures, drawings and caricatures. The National Gallery is worth seeing from all points of view if you pass through central London!

Regularly pop in here to stock up on their fantastic postcards of various iconic inspirational people, past & present...I'd like to see more movie star cards, there's a few here but there are so many more they could add...
At the top of the stairs in the gallery there's a small portrait of Mary Seacole...see the plaque outside her home in Soho Square...and her (now restored) grave at Kensal Green...

It's amazing to be so close to the works you know from books. They are impressive live, although they surprise with most sizes. Who would have thought that the most famous portrait of Henry VIII is about A3 size. It would fit into a photocopier;)

It was amazing to experience those works of art one had seen in books. Really impressive. On the other hand, however - who would have thought that the most famous Henry VIII portrait could fit a photocopier.

It is next to the National Gallery, slightly set back from the square. In a sense, it is a "branch" of the National Gallery. The difference is that this museum focuses on portraits, so if we want to know what face the fourth Duchess of Northumberland did or how long the whiskers of the Archduke of Gloucester were, we'll find out here. In the end, it is better to go there with a minimum of idea of what to see or you risk getting bored by too many too similar faces. However, the rooms are well organized and the paintings are carefully commented. A ride, maybe faster than the National one, it's worth doing

Intriguing collection of art. Always something new to see. I was there for the art class which was amazing. It was a hot day and they sold drinks drinks at the entrance. It will be good to make it clear that drinks could not be taken. Other than than a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

This is a part of the nation's history captured in paintings and print. The gallery is well organised. We are lucky to have a place like this where it's free to enter. Generous people keep this vibrant p ace going. Each donates according to their means. A must see for all.

After having visited the National Portrait Gallery, I've come to realise that I've been missing out by not doing things like this more often. This was an extremely enjoyable experience and I can't emphasise enough the amount of appreciation for art and history that I came out of it with.

This place combines portraits within over 800 years period! I love English history, and it is such a pleasure to visit places like National Portrait Gallery where you can see original paintings of great monarchs (including amazing picture of Elizabeth II with her dog), famous women, beloved and beheaded wives, important historic scenes and events and admire the modern artists' works! You can spend hours in this place and get such a great inspiration! Do secure some time for this gallery when visiting London

The National Gallery located in Trafalgar Scuare square is very interesting. The first thing to note about the few museums in the world that does not charge to visit it, with the exception of certain and few spouses like the painter Sorolla the day I visited the museum. Highlight great works of Spanish, Italian, Dutch art ......., Rembrant, Goya, Caravagio, Murillo..el Greco.
A pleasure to explore its rooms.

There are some excellent exhibitions here, which we've been to over the years. We were here to see the Pre-Raphaelite Sisters exhibition, which was great and very eye-opening. It can be difficult to see the text on the wall, sometimes, due to people standing in the way and it felt as though some of the staff didn't actually want to be there. There are free exhibitions here, as well, though.
