It is an international airport away from the Saudi capital, Riyadh, about 15 km. It is the center of the national air transport system. Designed by the American Bureau of Architecture, Helmut, Opata and Kasabaum, it was opened in 1983 to be the largest airport in the world in terms of area, with an area of about 225 square kilometers, the airport bears the name of King Khalid bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.
There are 5 passenger lounges, including three indoor lounges (two operating lounges and one empty and not complementary for future use) and two international lounges connected by four connected buildings.Each of these three-lined lanes have a triangular base and a floor area of approximately 47,500 square meters. The length of each building of buildings connected between the halls to 168 m and the approximate area of 25,000 square meters and contains buildings on the moving tracks, restaurants, cafeterias and offices for airlines and government agencies and commercial markets. Opposite the lounges are three-story public parking, with a capacity for 8,000 cars and 3,600 rooftop cars.
Work is underway to expand and upgrade passenger terminal at the airport on several stages where the completion of the final project in 2038 and expects a capacity of 47 million passengers. The first phase of expansion and modernization includes the construction of the new passenger terminal 5 with a capacity of 12 million passengers expected to be completed by the end of 2015, followed by the rehabilitation and modernization of lounges 4 and 3 and then lounges 2 and 1 to become the total capacity of the first stage 35.5 million passengers by the end of the year 2020.
Terminal 5 is currently under construction with a capacity of 12 million passengers, followed by the expansion of Terminal 3 and 4 to accommodate 17.5 million domestic and international passengers, unlike Terminal 5 under construction and the existing Terminal 1 and 2. The airport will have a capacity of 35.5 million passengers during the first phase of the planned expansion in five years. This development ends at the end of 2017
