Mujeres Latinas en Acción: Empowering Latinas through Culture and Advocacy
Mujeres Latinas en Acción (Mujeres) is a non-profit organization that has been serving the Latina community in Chicago for over 45 years. Founded in 1973, Mujeres has been empowering Latinas by providing services that reflect their values and culture, while also advocating for issues that make a difference in their lives.
As a bilingual/bicultural agency, Mujeres understands the unique challenges faced by Latina women. They provide a range of services to help them overcome these challenges and achieve their full potential. These services include counseling, legal assistance, education and job training programs, health education and advocacy.
One of the key strengths of Mujeres is its commitment to cultural competency. They recognize that culture plays an important role in shaping the experiences of Latina women and strive to provide culturally sensitive services that are tailored to meet their specific needs. This approach has helped them build strong relationships with the communities they serve.
Mujeres also serves as an advocate on issues affecting Latina women at both local and national levels. They work closely with policymakers to ensure that policies are inclusive of the needs of Latina women and advocate for changes where necessary.

Over the years, Mujeres has received numerous awards for its outstanding work in empowering Latinas. In 2019 alone they were recognized by several organizations including The Chicago Community Trust’s Acting Up Awards which honored them with $50k grant award; The National Association of Latino Arts & Cultures (NALAC) awarded them $10k grant award; The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence awarded them “Outstanding Community Partner” award; among others.
