As an author of police fiction, a retired policeman, a teacher of detective fiction, as well as a life long habitual reader devoted to it, my curiosity was aroused when I discovered "The American Police Novel", by Leroy Lad Panek on the web. I ordered a copy and was instantly intrigued by Panek's fascinating account of the evolution of police fiction and analysis of its components past and present. His book is not only of great value to anyone toiling in the genre but an endearing one to readers loyal to cop (both official and private) stories. It was pleasurable to discover that Panek's scholarly work, published a decade before my latest, "Love and Death in Silicon Valley", nevertheless, thoroughly and accurately described my four previous best selling cop novels. It leads me to confer the highest honor on an author, an examination of his other writing .
