What a massive venue, great for hosting events like the Chicago Auto Show. Navigating through these massive halls can be quite a challenge. I wish there were more directions posted, hence I'm taking away a star.

Massive conference with no obvious pedestrian access. I appreciate it is in America but surely walking isn't yet illegal. Pedestrian access to Solidiers Field (some kind of sports facility) from there to McCormick you end up walking on some road, disappointing.

This place is huge. Like bigger than my mind can fully digest. Clean, orderly and easy to navigate for the show I attended. Docking two stars because their pricing fleeces attendees more than an airport.

Huge convention center.

Huge convention center.
A little confusing with entry/ exit on all sides, just have to pay attention to where you need to exit, or it means walking a very long way around. Otherwise, it has adequate bathrooms, meeting rooms, eateries, ATM machines, etc....

The East Building / Lakeside Center is an awesome, imposing Modernist structure that just screams Chicago. I can appreciate it for that. Beyond that - don't get lost in McCormick Place, it's huge. Remember which garage you parked in.

They have the best setup for Basketball Tournaments! They need more food vendors in the establishment. My daughter sprained her ankle badly and the trainers didn't have the proper crutches for her. My husband had to carry her to the bus! Staff is good. Need more trash cans in the facility!

About McCormick Place Rooftop Garden

McCormick Place Rooftop Garden: A Green Oasis in the Heart of Chicago

McCormick Place is a name that resonates with anyone who has ever attended a convention or trade show in Chicago. As the largest and most flexible use convention center in North America, McCormick Place has hosted countless events over the years, from political conventions to auto shows to medical conferences. But what many people don't know is that McCormick Place is also home to one of the city's best-kept secrets: a stunning rooftop garden that offers visitors a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

The McCormick Place Rooftop Garden was created as part of an ambitious sustainability initiative launched by the convention center in 2007. The goal was to transform McCormick Place into a model for sustainable urban development, and one of the key components of this effort was the creation of an expansive green roof on top of one of its buildings.

Today, the McCormick Place Rooftop Garden covers more than 2.5 acres and features over 20,000 plants representing more than 100 species native to Illinois. The garden is divided into several distinct areas, each with its own unique character and purpose.

One section features raised beds filled with vegetables and herbs that are used by chefs at McCormick Place's restaurants. Another area showcases native prairie grasses and wildflowers, providing habitat for birds and insects while also helping to manage stormwater runoff.

Visitors can stroll along winding paths through lush gardens filled with colorful blooms or relax on benches overlooking Lake Michigan while taking in stunning views of downtown Chicago's skyline. Interpretive signs throughout the garden provide information about sustainable landscaping practices as well as details about specific plant species.

But perhaps what makes the McCormick Place Rooftop Garden truly special is its role as a living laboratory for sustainable design practices. The garden serves as a testing ground for new technologies such as green roofs, rain gardens, permeable pavement systems, and other innovative approaches to managing stormwater runoff.

In addition to providing an oasis for visitors seeking respite from city life, this green roof also helps reduce energy consumption within McCormick place by insulating against heat loss during winter months while reducing cooling costs during summer months through evapotranspiration processes which cools down surrounding air temperatures naturally without using any energy-intensive equipment like air conditioners or fans.

The rooftop garden has received numerous awards since it opened in 2008 including recognition from Green Roofs For Healthy Cities (GRHC) which named it "Green Roof Project Of The Year" award winner at their annual conference held in Boston back then; it has been featured on national television programs such as PBS' "Growing A Greener World" series; it even made headlines when former President Barack Obama visited during his time at office!

In conclusion,

The McCormick place rooftop garden stands out not only because it provides visitors with breathtaking views but also because it serves as an example for how cities can incorporate sustainable design practices into their infrastructure projects without sacrificing aesthetics or functionality.
It’s no wonder why this hidden gem continues attracting tourists worldwide who want nothing but peace amidst nature’s beauty!
