We come to this bookstore each year when visiting Asheville but this year they won t let you come in unless you live in North Carolina! I had the vaccine months ago and love to buy books. I am not aware of any public health recommendation encouraging discrimination against non residents. Odd business move for an independent bookstore...

Best bookstore in town. Barnes and Noble can suck it. They are very likely to have anything you want (amazingly large collection for such a small shop). It smells of coffee and books... what more do you want?

How can a supposedly educated group who run this place allow themselves to become pawns of mindless disgusting religious hatred, based on lies distortions and totally false accounts of actions by terrorists in the middle east. No objective informed person could agree with the jew haters who distort everything in their aim of delegitimization of Israel, the only democratic society in the whole middle east, being subjected to attacks and abuse from degenerate haters.
A shocking choice by a supposedly responsible group. Shameful....... ENOUGH is enough,.....
Try reading up on actual history which any bookstore worth its salt would and should have done long ago and refused to allow the despicable haters of BDS anywhere near their premises.

How can so much inscribed wonder and joy be packed into a space that remains close and neighbourly, eschewing the book warehouse feel of chain stores?

Malaprops does it with tongue in cheek abandon, from the name to the witty banter that the staff will deploy, if you show the slightest hint of personality beyond that of a mere consumer drone.

Intelligent offerings, thought provoking displays, I've been here twice, loved it each time, spent more than I ought to, gleefully, and will damn well come here again.

And they have coffee...

If you're in Asheville and you love to read, then make a beeline for Malaprop's! In a time where local bookstores are increasingly rare, how refreshing it is to walk into a store filled with printed books and more. Grab a cup of coffee and browse their extensive collection. Not sure what to read next? Then go on a "blind date with a book" by selecting a wrapped mystery book that contains a list of descriptors. That's how I found my most recent purchase, The Heart of the World, and am thoroughly enjoying it.

Visiting Asheville again last month, went to shop ...

Visiting Asheville again last month, went to shop at Malaprops with my wife. Not our first time there, we had shopped there on previous trips. We had already started out shopping on the street, keeping the tourist money flowing, supporting the local businesses, so we obviously had some shopping bags. My wife and I were picking out Christmas gifts for our family when a lady asked me for all of our bags. She said it was a store policy that she hold all of our things while we shopped. - To be clear - she could obviously see that we were spenders - already shopping and spending quite a bit of money at other stores nearby... My wife walked into the conversation and asked what the issue was so I said "she doesn't want me shopping in their store if I have a bag in my hand", thinking that the employee would clarify and redact the thought that we were trying to shoplift. (that's the way it felt) She said nothing - validating that she would rather me leave with my bags, so I did. I told my wife, "she doesn't want me in here with my bags so I am leaving". The lady let me leave - with my wallet. Lost sale for Malaprops and I will never return.

I understand that some stores have policies but this one hurts them I think. It certainly turned me off and made me feel like a suspected shoplifter. The store is in a very nice area of town too with mostly wealthy (I presume) shoppers from out of town.

Sorry but we wont be back. We'll spend our money where we feel welcome.

We remembered the store from a previous visit to Asheville, it didn't disappoint this time either. Eclectic mix of books, local fair, and comfortable setting. Can't imagine we won't visit anytime we're near.

Came here to try the Blind Date shelf - wasn't disappointed! Lots of good selections/sections including a large children's section. Didn't think the books were overpriced - priced what the book itself was priced, not above. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area.

Very friendly staff at the cafe and coffee drinks were yummy. Appreciated that they had a variety of milk/non-milk options. In addition to the books (obviously!), cute selection of gifts, cards, magnets, bumper stickers and kids' toys. Visited with a friend with a baby and we were a bit surprised that the washrooms didn't have a changing spot.

I had an incredibly special experience buying my son his birthday present! Erin took literally 20 minutes helping me order the perfect copy of a trilogy that I hope he will enjoy for the rest of his life. She made the experience meaningful to me. As a bonus, the atmosphere is always calm and comforting, they have an excellent selection both in- store and by special order, and obviously the customer service is superb. Thank you!

Great little bookstore with coffee shop. Had a quaint small town locally owned vibe. The space per customer flow was a bit small (even on a Tuesday afternoon) but the feel was quaint enough. I look forward to visiting again.

We've been here before but only stayed a few minutes (there was a lecture in the cafe and we were going to be talking) this time which felt-for me-like having the Gates of Heaven opened and then shut again. SO many books, several shelves of staff recommendations which are always helpful . One of those places that makes you really glad there is still such a thing as Indie Bookstores and that they are still surviving.

Malaprop's is everything I want in an indie bookstore. It's equal parts irreverent sass and expert inventory. The staff are super friendly and helpful when you're trying to remember the name of that one book that came out last summer with the purple cover written by that one person or when you're searching for a gift for your 9-year-old niece who just got into graphic novels and is obsessed with outer space and Rosie the Riveter. It's been hard to resist shopping in person during COVID, of course. But folks, I just called up and asked for a recommendation and they were SO HELPFUL. Plus, they ship literally wherever. Trust me, I asked. Denmark even. Seriously WHEREVER, people. I'm eager to return for author readings when everything's chill again. Lord knows how bad a fella wants to sit at Malaprop's and listen to Wiley Cash and Bobbie Ann Mason shoot the stuff about writing & life. The good news is, it looks like the cafe is installing some sorta street-side pick-up order window action. Prolly gonna grab a coffee there and sit down with a book at that weird statue out front and pretend life is normal with all my other street people. BTW, you gotta hold the toilet handle down for a couple seconds to totally flush in the gentlemen's.

This place is a dream. I spend HOURS in here every time I am in Asheville! Fantastic selection of books and gifts. Plenty of room to wander and to plop down with a few books. Precious children's section, too! It's everything a bookstore should be.

The selection of if books is great and the staff are super friendly. You walk in and you are treated with the warm smell if coffee and new books. Perhaps you'll walk in on an author speaking about their book, or perhaps you want a nice area to sit and do some work.
