Love this place! Everyone knows everything about books and are all super helpful.
We come to this bookstore each year when visiting Asheville but this year they won t let you come in unless you live in North Carolina! I had the vaccine months ago and love to buy books. I am not aware of any public health recommendation encouraging discrimination against non residents. Odd business move for an independent bookstore...
Great atmosphere for browsing. Grab a drink and snack. There is something here for everyone.
Cute little bookstore with lots of classical literature and a coffee shop would recommend it for reading
Great book store excellent coffee. I always make an effort to stop here when I am in Asheville.
Nice little bookstore with a large selection of books and unique gift options. If you get there on the right day at the right time you may catch a live reading.
I love browsing and finding little gems. The staff is always friendly and helpful.
Best bookstore in town. Barnes and Noble can suck it. They are very likely to have anything you want (amazingly large collection for such a small shop). It smells of coffee and books... what more do you want?
A great book selection along with a wonderful selection of gift items. Worth the trip.
How can a supposedly educated group who run this place allow themselves to become pawns of mindless disgusting religious hatred, based on lies distortions and totally false accounts of actions by terrorists in the middle east. No objective informed person could agree with the jew haters who distort everything in their aim of delegitimization of Israel, the only democratic society in the whole middle east, being subjected to attacks and abuse from degenerate haters.
A shocking choice by a supposedly responsible group. Shameful....... ENOUGH is enough,.....
Try reading up on actual history which any bookstore worth its salt would and should have done long ago and refused to allow the despicable haters of BDS anywhere near their premises.
I've always loved this little gem if an independent bookstore. Love the local selection and highlightsling the employee favorites.
A lot of classic titles, something for everyone. A lot of decent prices.
Haven't been to the cafe, but great staff, and staff reccomendations. Especially the sci fi recs.
The best bookstore I've ever been to and I've been to bookstores globally!
Great local bookstore with excellent visiting authors
How can so much inscribed wonder and joy be packed into a space that remains close and neighbourly, eschewing the book warehouse feel of chain stores?
Malaprops does it with tongue in cheek abandon, from the name to the witty banter that the staff will deploy, if you show the slightest hint of personality beyond that of a mere consumer drone.
Intelligent offerings, thought provoking displays, I've been here twice, loved it each time, spent more than I ought to, gleefully, and will damn well come here again.
And they have coffee...
Walk in and the smell of coffee and books is delicious. Love the variety of items, so much more than books.
As you can see from all of the posts, this bookstore has it all.
I just thought I would add that their hot chocolate is good, too.
I could never visit Asheville without paying a visit to my favorite quirky bookstore!
Make sure you check out the blind date with a book section.
Owner qas rude right when we arrived restricting Visitors from out of town in his store. I have spent much here yet never again.
Love the selections of books, staff is super helpful... Great atmosphere, must experience!
I love the location of this bookstore & how open they are to everybody who walks thru the door!
You can't go wrong with anything in Asheville. I love all the author meet and greets.
Great selection and enjoyable atmosphere. Employees are knowledgeable and friendly.
If you're in Asheville and you love to read, then make a beeline for Malaprop's! In a time where local bookstores are increasingly rare, how refreshing it is to walk into a store filled with printed books and more. Grab a cup of coffee and browse their extensive collection. Not sure what to read next? Then go on a "blind date with a book" by selecting a wrapped mystery book that contains a list of descriptors. That's how I found my most recent purchase, The Heart of the World, and am thoroughly enjoying it.
Fantastic atmosphere and great staff! Good place to find books for all ages and coffee or tea is also an option. New age and uplifting!
Always a joy to enter into Malaprop's!!! Friendly., very knowledgeable staff, great selection of books, good coffee and an extra selection of guest authors. Thank you for remaining an independent gem!!
Malaprops is a local staple in Asheville. If you love a good independent book store then you will love malaprops.
Cool book store with a local feel in the heart of the city of Asheville
Visiting Asheville again last month, went to shop at Malaprops with my wife. Not our first time there, we had shopped there on previous trips. We had already started out shopping on the street, keeping the tourist money flowing, supporting the local businesses, so we obviously had some shopping bags. My wife and I were picking out Christmas gifts for our family when a lady asked me for all of our bags. She said it was a store policy that she hold all of our things while we shopped. - To be clear - she could obviously see that we were spenders - already shopping and spending quite a bit of money at other stores nearby... My wife walked into the conversation and asked what the issue was so I said "she doesn't want me shopping in their store if I have a bag in my hand", thinking that the employee would clarify and redact the thought that we were trying to shoplift. (that's the way it felt) She said nothing - validating that she would rather me leave with my bags, so I did. I told my wife, "she doesn't want me in here with my bags so I am leaving". The lady let me leave - with my wallet. Lost sale for Malaprops and I will never return.
I understand that some stores have policies but this one hurts them I think. It certainly turned me off and made me feel like a suspected shoplifter. The store is in a very nice area of town too with mostly wealthy (I presume) shoppers from out of town.
Sorry but we wont be back. We'll spend our money where we feel welcome.
We remembered the store from a previous visit to Asheville, it didn't disappoint this time either. Eclectic mix of books, local fair, and comfortable setting. Can't imagine we won't visit anytime we're near.
Super great staff. Glad to see that local bookstores are doing well.
super lovely little place!! they had tons of books i had never even heard of. staff are really friendly, and theyre a super lgbt-friendly establishment, which is always nice to see!
One of my favorite places to go when I am in the Asheville area.
Great selection of books, delicious coffee too! Helpful staff
Came here to try the Blind Date shelf - wasn't disappointed! Lots of good selections/sections including a large children's section. Didn't think the books were overpriced - priced what the book itself was priced, not above. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area.
Very friendly staff at the cafe and coffee drinks were yummy. Appreciated that they had a variety of milk/non-milk options. In addition to the books (obviously!), cute selection of gifts, cards, magnets, bumper stickers and kids' toys. Visited with a friend with a baby and we were a bit surprised that the washrooms didn't have a changing spot.
I love the idea of this coffee shop/bookstore! The coffee also tasted delicious!
Great staff, wonderful book collection, excellent coffee and food!
So supportive of local authors . A real community atmosphere. Real appreciate all you are doing to assist in stopping the spread of covid. Great book collections. Clean, peaceful and welcoming atmosphere
I had an incredibly special experience buying my son his birthday present! Erin took literally 20 minutes helping me order the perfect copy of a trilogy that I hope he will enjoy for the rest of his life. She made the experience meaningful to me. As a bonus, the atmosphere is always calm and comforting, they have an excellent selection both in- store and by special order, and obviously the customer service is superb. Thank you!
We love this local bookstore! They have many author signings. We attended a busy author sign just recently and it was well organized. A perfect place to find your next favorite story!
Really interesting bookstore. Look out for the signed copies.
Always fun to sneak a peak in Malaprops to checkout what's on the booksellers' reading list and grab a cup of tea. A must-visit for the booklover in Asheville!
A must-visit whenever you're in Asheville. Great bookstore with a lovely cafe surrounded by a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Perfect place to pick up a book if you are in downtown Asheville, amazing selection and knowledgeable staff!
What a perfect bookstore. Friendly staff, a massive selection across genres, and fun surprises like the Blind Date With a Book shelf. If you're in Asheville, you've got to check this store out.
Great little bookstore with coffee shop. Had a quaint small town locally owned vibe. The space per customer flow was a bit small (even on a Tuesday afternoon) but the feel was quaint enough. I look forward to visiting again.
It's an icon. Do yourself a favor and go. Get that book you've been meaning to read for the past year and then get a blind date book as well.
We've been here before but only stayed a few minutes (there was a lecture in the cafe and we were going to be talking) this time which felt-for me-like having the Gates of Heaven opened and then shut again. SO many books, several shelves of staff recommendations which are always helpful . One of those places that makes you really glad there is still such a thing as Indie Bookstores and that they are still surviving.
Great local book store with coffee shop. Lots of personality with staff picks and blind date books. They have a wide variety of books. It makes it easy to shop local with such a large selection.
One of my all time favorite book shops. Wide variety of used and rare books.
A classic Downtown Asheville landmark and still excellent!
One special bookstore, gift shop, and cafe in Asheville. A must on the walking routine.
Needs some ac the place is like walking in to a furnace.
Great shop for chilling and books. It ressonates with me with the AVL vibe.
Great selection of new books. Wounderful advice and well mannered staff. Great location. Definitely worth checking out and supporting
Malaprop's is everything I want in an indie bookstore. It's equal parts irreverent sass and expert inventory. The staff are super friendly and helpful when you're trying to remember the name of that one book that came out last summer with the purple cover written by that one person or when you're searching for a gift for your 9-year-old niece who just got into graphic novels and is obsessed with outer space and Rosie the Riveter. It's been hard to resist shopping in person during COVID, of course. But folks, I just called up and asked for a recommendation and they were SO HELPFUL. Plus, they ship literally wherever. Trust me, I asked. Denmark even. Seriously WHEREVER, people. I'm eager to return for author readings when everything's chill again. Lord knows how bad a fella wants to sit at Malaprop's and listen to Wiley Cash and Bobbie Ann Mason shoot the stuff about writing & life. The good news is, it looks like the cafe is installing some sorta street-side pick-up order window action. Prolly gonna grab a coffee there and sit down with a book at that weird statue out front and pretend life is normal with all my other street people. BTW, you gotta hold the toilet handle down for a couple seconds to totally flush in the gentlemen's.
Great books, amazing and cozy environment. Good selection of books and novelties.
This was a cool place to go to. They have a large selection and the staff was super helpful. If I had to recommend anything it would be to buy their "blind date" books.
This place is a dream. I spend HOURS in here every time I am in Asheville! Fantastic selection of books and gifts. Plenty of room to wander and to plop down with a few books. Precious children's section, too! It's everything a bookstore should be.
Unknowingly I bought a book there. They charged me 150% over other stores. There is supporting local businesses that you expect to pay a little more and there is being ripped off.
I went for a book reading/signing and it was perfect
I found out that this is one of the original stores in the area. It was nice and pleasant the workers were very friendly and the prices were reasonably for a used book store.
Great place to spend a rainy day! Variety of books and gifts.
The selection of if books is great and the staff are super friendly. You walk in and you are treated with the warm smell if coffee and new books. Perhaps you'll walk in on an author speaking about their book, or perhaps you want a nice area to sit and do some work.
