Love their butter chicken, mattar paneer, and their vegetable korma!
Love their butter chicken, mattar paneer, and their vegetable korma!
Great food, good ambience and quick service. We loved their paneer makhani, cheese naan and mango lassi is simply outstanding
Great food, with good indian spice to it. The drinks didnt hit the spot otherwise could have rated 4.5
awful. my family went to the lunch buffet at 1 pm and there were only two other tables there. the waiter pointed at the table we were to sit at. he never asked us if we wanted a beverage other than water. he never refilled the water either. He brought us one basket of bread and didn't ever come to check on our table the entire time we were there. the food was not hot. some dished were good but they needed to be microwaved and the yogurt sauce was so runny that it was like skim milk. I will never eat at this place again. maybe if the service was a little better I wouldn't feel so negative about it.
I stopped at this restaurant for the lunch buffet on a whim while driving from Roanoke to Washington DC. When I got home, I told my spouse it was the best Indian buffet that I'd ever had. . . and I meant it! The variety is impressive and included several vegetarian dishes that I'd never before encountered, a lovely mango pudding, and a wide range of meat-based dishes. It was very impressive!
Poor service, the Waiter takes forever to get around, the owner is very assure of himself about his food and couldn't recommended a particular dish stating all his food is great. The food tasted the same and the price was horriable. On top of that he added the 18% to the pull for tip when it was a party of 3. Go to Milan its down the street.
The food was plentiful and delicious. Our server, Inacio went above and beyond. As my 5 yr son said- 300,000 thumbs up!
Mmm MMM Indian Buffett. Ask for the naan, it's fresh and flaky and buttery and makes you wish you were coordinated enough to use it instead of a fork
This restaurant is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am in love with Maharaja!!! I took my friend here, after working out, and we were blown away at how delicious the food is (and healthy). We got the buffet option, and was not let down. Everything we had was sooooooo good. Had to take a plate to go!!!! And the staff were nice and professional. Will definitely be going back!!!
Pretty good indian food but my least favorite of the three indian restaurants just off of Seminole Trail.
Although there's no full time South Indian restaurant in Charlottesville, Maharaja has excellent North India cuisine lunch buffet selections, especially good for vegans too, because all of the curried side dishes in the vegetarian section that are vegan are labeled as such. My favorite day for lunch buffet is Sundays, when they also include one South India cuisine item, Masala Dosa with potato veggie filling and/or plain Dosa crepes (Sada Dosa) as well. Unfortunately, that's all for the southern cuisine...no rasam available, but they do have their own version of sambhar. Mulligatawny soup, salad, non vegan desserts and mixed hot pickles are included.
Not worth the price. There are other good asian/indian restaurants that have better food.
Person taking the order was pretty rude, but the food was great.
The ambience here is very calming, almost as if you are stepping into a wealthy home in India. The service is courteous and attentive, but not invasive in their approach. The atmosphere inclines one to stay for awhile, which is a good thing, as the food can take a bit of time to reach the table. Granted, taking the time to prepare the food is only part of the experience that they are trying to create here. Meals here are meant to be shared and experienced, not simply eaten and viewed as simple food. It is well worth the wait. Enjoy yourself here and let the many layers and textures of this cuisine take you out of the general rat race. I will be returning here as often as is possible. Definitely worth your time.
I've enjoyed many Indian cuisine restaurants and although this isn't the best that I've had, for this area, it was great! They have a broad menu with many options suited to any diet, or palatte. :-)
this restaraunt is small and although it is in seminole square and visible from 29 it is almost hard to find, but once you find it you will always return. If you are dinning late make sure you get there ats least 45 min before closing other wise you can only order take out. The service is not the fastest in the world but they even say in the menu that their method of service is to take it slow so you may enjoy your meal and the company you bring.( I suggest you bring guests the more different this you order the more you can try). All food is served family style so it is easy to share and even take home extras ( I am a big guy and I still take home leftovers often). As a member of the culinary community I say with confidence that this is the best indian food in Charlottsville ( apart from maybe some ones grandmothers house). you will never be disappointed.
Flavors galore. Delicious food. Price is on-point for the all you can eat buffet. It's a go-2 for my co-workers and I. Pamper yourself. Indulge. Be one with the Maharaja. Namaste.
Too bad that Royal India closed. Now there are only 3 and Maharaja is at the bottom of those 3. With so few places to choose Indian food in Charlottesville you'd think they'd pay more attention to things. First, as you enter Maharaja the patio, outside seating area and entrance way are filthy. Old leaves, wind-blown trash, and dirt are everywhere. Looks like it hasn't been swept in a year. And, the pile of dog poop on the edge of the lawn doesn't help. We first tried this place two years ago as we were just starting to appreciate Indian food. Since then we've dined at several others and now realize how below standard Maharaja is. The pictures they post look good - real good but they're deceiving. The inside looks worn, dirty and very dated. The food is mediocre compared to the other Charlottesville Indian restaurants we've enjoyed. Maharaja's buffet food seems like varying colors and textures of paste all about tasting the same. It' s still ok but nothing worth going out of your way for. The service sucks. I had to twice place our empty plates and used napkins on another table so we had room on ours. And I had to ask for fresh napkins. On a scale of one to 10 my wife and I give Maharaja a 3.
Maharaja Fine Indian Cuisine - great job! Delicious food and super easy online ordering system that gives an exact time the food will be ready, which it was. Upon arrival, I just called and they brought it right out to my car.
Nothing special about this restaurant. The food comes no where close to an authentic Indian taste but is not any different from most Indian restaurants in the area.
We don't live in VA any more, but when we did, we came here every 2 months. There are 3 Indian restaurants in Charlottesville. And this one is the best! Indian food is just awesome. Never had anything less than a great meal. Very nice looking on the inside, too. Decor is elegant.
Had the chicken Tikka masala, should have asked for more than medium spicy. Entree order was large enough for two people. Garlic naan was good too, and I can never complain about mango lassi.
As others have pointed out, the food is very Americanized and inconsistent. However, the other Indian Restaurants in Cville are worse.
One of my favorite restaurants, and a must when visiting Charlottesville.
The best Indian food in Charlottesville. The only Other place that's comes close is Milan and really that's only by virtue of their naan. Everyone should try the palak paneer.
Good food coupled with decent service! A bit on the pricey side but worth it if you re into Indian food.
I love this place so much, I have to come every time we visit Charlottesville. To the point where we make trips just to go here. This is the best Indian food I've ever had in my life.
Not very impressed. Chicken was dry. Curries were too sweet. Maybe I'm just spoiled eating home cooked Indian food and having been to India. Entrees between 13 and 17 dollars is over priced. Wouldn't eat here again. But staff was very friendly, nice decor.
I wanted to try this place solely based on both the good and bad reviews. And I have to say that my experience today enjoying the lunch buffet was a very good one. The food was super delicious as it was seasoned wonderfully and there was a nice variety. They had both a good variety of meat dishes as well as vegetable dishes to choose from. They also had a good variety of sauces, a nice lentil soup, fruit drinks and dessert that was included with the buffet. I was skeptical about the mango pudding at first and I really didn't taste the mango much in the first bite but after bite three the mango flavor was amazing. The rice pudding was equally delicious and not at all like your typical custard American rice pudding. It had a great infusion of creamy, spicy and nutty flavors. They home make both of those as well. The naan bread was brought fresh and hot to my table. I tried everything they had to offer on the buffet and ALL of it was great.
The wait staff was kind and courteous and the restaurant was decorated nicely and is clean. I definitely left here feeling very full and very satisfied. For the price of the lunch buffet what I got was well worth it. They also have a buy 7 get your 8th buffet free card. All you have to do is ask for one. I found out about the card from a regular customer of many years. He said that the quality and taste of the foods here are always amazing. I'll will be coming back to eat again for sure!
Amazing food and service! Well worth the hour drive to come eat here.
Nice place for dinner, specialty Indian cuisine. Try something different, some very nice food and welcoming people
Went there for the lunch buffet it was really good. Also loved the service
The food was amazing! If you like spicy, definitely go with the 'Indian Spice'. The portions are massive so plenty to take home and reheat the next day like I did. This was my husbands goat Madras and my chicken tikka masala reheated. Definitely plan on going back.
My husband and I love this place. Very authentic, tasty food. In addition, the staff are friendly and helpful.
I am sorry to say this was the worst Indian food I ever had. No salt, no flavor, where are all the spices that brings the flavor together. Why the food taste sweet? Someone in the kitchen don't know how to cook Indian food. I don't know when was the last time they cleaned the blinds.
Wonderful food, and the staff were incredibly kind!
Always delicious, terrific service, great atmosphere. The best Indian food in town, hands down!
Maharaja is the finest Indian restaurant in Charlottesville. Food is awesome and the service is friendly. A must stop for C-Ville residents.
We like the food and the people there. They seem to care about the quality. The dining room is certainly dated but the food and care more than make up for it.
I have eaten a few times here and am always impressed by how personable the staff are and at the quality of the food. If you understand Indian cuisine, you will appreciate Maharajah.
Good food. Good takeout. Prices higher like everywhere with COVID.
I think this is by far the best Indian restaurant in Charlottesville. It s family owned restaurant that puts care into their awesome food. The food is only tasty but my tummy feels good afterwards. Once I discovered this restaurant, I can t go to any other ones of its kind. Due to the virus outbreak, there is no lunch buffet but their takeout food is still wonderful. Highly recommend.
Food is subpar, service is even worse. Management makes no attempt to rectify mistakes. There are too many BETTER OPTIONS out there. This place will likely be closed within the year.
Ordered delivery from this place. Took 3+ hours. Management wouldn't rebate the delivery fee OR our tip, which we had pre-specified when we gave them our credit card.
It is heavenly to be able to eat from a buffet as a vegan! Fellow veggies reading this, go support these good people for having such a veggie-friendly buffet (and menu of course). I never imagined myself eating at a buffet after taking the green. Everything was delicious, and the service was so non-generic and friendly. My eating companion said the meat eaters side was also delicious. The buffet also has the perfect spicy level for someone like me who can't handle spicyness
I very liked it
. definitely will be back!
Excellent Service, Tasty Food

A tasty little gem tucked away in Downtown Charlottsville. Indian food on the road was a big bonus passing through the area,
Hands down the BEST Chicken Tikka Masala I ve EVER had! Wonderful service and so many choices on the lunch buffet. I will be back again.
This is hands down my most FAV Indian restaurant!! Great friendly service and the food is always delicious!!
Ordered delivery, the samosas were perfect and the order got to my house extremely fast.
Love Maharaja, food and service is excellent! I love going to the lunch buffet that has everything one could ever crave..A must stop!
Wonderful service. Delicous food. What more do you want?
The BEST Indian cuisine anywhere. Absolutely delicious. Friendly staff. You get a lot for your money. Try bnb it one time and you'll be hooked forever.
The food is always fresh and tastes great. We like the butter chicken very much.
Best Indian food in town. Hands down!
Plus, their wait staff is top notch (especially Ignacio) and their food is always quick and always great quality. Couldn't ask for more.
I am writing this review right now sitting in the Maharaja restaurant. What I had seen is worst than horrible
It's a buffet, I had some leftovers on my plate and i went for another round - To my shock, the chief server asked his assistance to take food back to the kitchen. I was like.. What?? How can you take it back to kitchen, its a leftover You should throw it. The food that is touched by me, tasted by me was taken back to kitchen to add it back as part of fill up. Never m gng to come to this place.
Donno how many people have touched my food before I swallow it. Yuckkkssss
Fabulous hospitality and excellent naan bread and butter chicken!
Consistently great food, excellent service, generous coupon offerings, and a quiet place to have a conversation while you eat keeps my family coming back again and again.
Ate here last night, and were blown away at how rich and good the sauces on everything were! Hands down the best Indian food we had ever had... and very nice people too. Will be back!
A wonderful buffet and friendly staff makes Maharaja one of the best lunch spots in c-ville!
I love this place and every time I go to Charlottesville I have to go here,it probably needs to be remodeled a little bit but the food is wonderful.
Fantastic food, excellent and friendly service, and recently renovated decor make for a superior dining experience! Best Indian food in town by a mile!
It is the best Indian food . I eat here at least once a week. Great service also!
Had lunch buffet, food was very good to this novice of Indian cuisine. Naan was freshly baked, warm soft, and delicious.
I highly recommend the reasonably-priced lunch buffet.
This is the premier take out option in Charlottesville. I'll be leaving this town I'm the summer and I know for certain that I will miss it.
It was the worst experience...service is really worst..Especially the owner has no manner to talk to their customers.....will never go again to this.....it was total waste of money
I am a Central Virginia native and UVA alumnus and I have been eating here on and off for over 20 years. There are many Indian and Indian-est restaurants that have come and gone over the years in Charlottesville but Maharaja has remained consistent. When I have a craving for Indian food, Maharaja is my destination of choice. The owners of Maharaja are much less pretentious than other newer Indian restaurants in Charlottesville. The ambience here always feels "comfortable". I will continue to patronize them as long as they remain open for business.
My friends recommended Maharaja for dinner and it did not disappoint!! Delicious food and great prices. The staff was so friendly and I will definitely be watching there again! The food was as delicious as it was pretty.
My two year old son loves Maharaja, this is a family place. They treat you so nice, I can say every time we come we come back home satisfied. We been coming for years because of its great quality food. Very affordable!!!!
The lunch buffet is excellent. They have a great variety of foods and they keep it full and fresh. They bring fresh naan right to your table and will keep refilling your basket. We will return.
Had chicken vindaloo bad Tikka masala. Flavourfull, spicy and tender. Great portion sizes and friendly service.
Will be coming back again!
