This place is awful. The last time I attended my mother was dying and I reached out to set up a support structure to help me through the process. I got in contact with trio (a service that's supposed to help people with disabilities navigate the collage experience) and had a counselor assigned to me and I talked to the teacher in the one class I was taking to let them know what was going on and that my mom would die during the semester. I was told that accommodations would be made for me, and all I needed to do was tell them what was going on. I stayed in regular contact with my counselor, until she started ghosting on my appointments, phone calls and emails right at the time of my mothers death, during finals. I also let the teacher know that I needed an extension on my final because there was too much going on for me to complete it at the moment. No one ever got back to me, and the teacher gave me an F. The people who swore that they'd help me did nothing when it came right down to it.

Good school, beautiful campus in a great location. Definitely a diverse student population due to it being downtown and less expensive. I received my AAS in accounting and had no problem finding a decent job in Milwaukee, WI. I felt like the program prepared me well and I never had problems with any of my instructors. MCTC may not hold your hand through the entire experience, but you are a grown adult in college and are expected to have the competency of such. If you do require that kind of attention, there are plenty of over priced diploma mill proprietary institutions that would be more than happy to take your money. I now attend Concordia University in pursuit of my BAS, almost all my credits transferred in so that will save me a decent amount of money. I would definitely recommend MCTC if you're okay with the diversity and the characters that come with being downtown.

The worst school there is in MN, they never answer their phone and if someone does he/she doesn't know how to answer your question. I have called many times and they say let me transfer to someone else and then they hang up on you after waiting for 30-45 mins on the phone? Not a very helpful people here. They care about the money not about the success of their students.

Go to another school. Just trying to register here is a nightmare. You don't want to deal with the incredibly unhelpful, hurried and condescending staff. My first abortive attempt at registering was to make an appointment with an advisor because their website is god-awful. I was sent with a pat on the head and told to just try harder online. My second attempt at getting help from staff was because of weird blocks they put on visiting students who try to register online. I tried calling....and again was told i have to do everything online. See a theme?

I ended up emailing either one person or multiple people, hard to tell except for the consistent impatiently condescending tone, and after several more misguided attempts just went in again.

What a mistake. The staff were harried and busy. I have no idea why it is so difficult to register here. The person who "dealt with" me (i wont say helped, because she didnt) was so unpleasant that she gave me the distinct impression that she simply didn't want to help and couldnt care less if i registered.

I ended up leaving with a bad taste in my mouth, so frustrated that I'm embarrassed to say i was on the verge of having the angry cries.

I scraped together the money to pay out of pocket. I'm polite and not unintelligent. I shower regularly and don't smell. Is asking for help registering for classes, or for the staff member to explain something i don't understand unreasonable? Isn't this a learning institution? Genuinely, I am baffled.

EDIT: I ended up taking the needed class because it's the only local school that offered it this semester. I can say that at least in this one freshman level class both the lecture professor and biology professor are excellent, professional and awesome. It is really a shame that the gatekeepers in the student services office are so horrible to deal with. I imagine a lot of people miss out on getting to be taught by good professors here.

The college has its ups and downs. Its a good school if things go smoothly, but its rare that happens.

The problems I ran into are:

- Bad at dealing with financial aid and pretty much any issue you have. They have about 3 people to deal with a school population of around 15,000. You'll be waiting hours just to talk to someone.
- You have to make sure that your financial aid comes through. They tried to give me less then half because they didn't process it right. This is a common thing.
- Student Senate is full of people that think they are better then you. They will talk down to you and act all high and mighty. If you start or join a club they make you fill out these elementary looking shoots that have statements like "good job", "Way to go!!!" to get funding.
- They change programs on people so the graduation requirements will make it so you don't graduate on time.
- Did I mention waiting? I waited over 10 hours in line and they still couldn't fix my problems with my I.D. number. It was a joke.
- Lazy staff that don't want to work towards getting things straightened.

Pros I encountered:

- Inspiring programs and people. 10-15% of the student body is homeless and a lot of people get out of poverty thanks to MCTC. They have incredible student organizations that are making a difference.
- Students that go places. I never have been to a college that has such inspiring individuals that are making a real impact.
- Ok programs. The program I was in was actually pretty good. The teachers care and they are willing to work with you.
- Once you get in things are descent but if you run across a problem get ready to call in a few days from work

This has to be the most unorganized institution I have ever come in contact with. Nobody has a clue when, where or what is going on. It bothers me that a school that teaches IT has a website and email system that is completely undependable. My daughter has spent many afternoons babysitting her email waiting for extremely important notifications that have never shown up.Instead receiving cancellations because she did not respond to emails that were never sent. They sound a little like this,

"Oh sorry we decided you're too late even if we never began. You're kicked out but not really. There were 20 hoops you were suppose to jump,19 you were successful with, you missed the one we were keeping secret and so you're out but not really. If you jump through all of the hoops again, while standing on one foot, before the clock runs out, with your finger up your nose, you can stay".

I've heard good things about St.paul next time they kick her out for missing an unscheduled class or email that never came or not marking attendance in a mandatory attendance class, we're headed over. I don't mind mistakes but it's not ok to hold a student responsible for the schools CONSTANT mistakes and shamefully inadequate administration.

WARNING don't take jenne cipar course she is the worst teacher on campus and will not pass you. She is a crook and deleted her ratemyprofessor profile. She is racist and treats you like you are retarded. You will take pop quizzes(she notifies you at the last minute when you will take quiz), in class d2l quiz and she will make sure you are constantly not cheating. She denies you to go to disability office. You have to arrive on time and not miss class or you will be dropped. She ignores your question in class. I will keep my post up here to ensure people are aware of her terrible behavior. She obviously hates her job and needs a new one

My experience with MCTC was downright awful. It wa...

My experience with MCTC was downright awful. It was so bad, that I took my daughter and we enrolled at Saint Paul College, a MUCH better school where staff actually go out of their way to help you.

The main reason I am writing this late review is to balance out some of the obviously FAKE 5 star reviews written by MCTC staff. I mean really people, when your reviewer only has one review under their belt and it is a glowing recommendation of your terrible school - it is a dead giveaway. Even more so when said reviewer blames the student body for all the shortcomings and praises staff for their knowledge... Which they do not posses.

My only real issue is that I no longer remember any names of anyone that "helped" us, because I sure would have liked to mention them here.

Now on with my review:
My daughter and I wasted an entire day trying to enroll here. That's right, I said trying. The staff is highly incompetent and lazy, and their sole purpose seems to be to misinform the students.

In the Student Services area, we asked the same question multiple times AND got different answers depending on who we spoke with. Really MCTC? Does anyone here actually know what is going on?
To make matters worse, one of the staff was having a (loud) personal phone call while a line of students waited to be helped.
But wait, there's more...
After being sent around department to department, and eventually finding the proper person to talk to about a waiver, we find out that said person is not there today and no one else can help us out...

Eventually we got to speak with an adviser... She was horrid. Not only was she not helpful or knowledgeable, she actually thought that it was perfectly fine to stuff her mouth while "helping" us.

This is when I got on my phone, googled colleges around the Twin Cities and off we went. If they won't make time to help us, why should we bother?

A side thought: MCTC was the only college that would not allow us to come in and apply on a Saturday, meaning that I had to take a day off work. Both IHCC and SPC were open on Saturday, but apparently at MCTC Student Services only work M-F (and with terrible hours). Doesn't surprise me, considering how awful my experience was, but that is just another thing to think about.

I hate this school. It was my first college and my siblings weren't much help in guiding me anywhere so I decided to attend MCTC since it was the closest and most convenient place to attend. I chose Culinary Arts as my major. My advisor was some lazy Vietnamese guy. He was NOT helpful at all, I asked other people about him and most of them said "I don't know why he isn't fired yet, he's useless". He couldn't even advise me on which generals to take. I took a required econ class (after having to ask my advisor multiple times, he probably got annoyed of me so he finally answered me back) and the teacher there didn't give a damn what you were doing. She just lectured with a power point till the end of class then assigned us reading pages in the text book. I found it annoying how she never bothered to interact with any of the students. I left that school after a semester.

The Cinema department at the MCTC is out of touch with the needs of their students. Most of the courses they offer in that department can be completed online. I earned a bachelor degree at the University of North Dakota several years before I began attending the MCTC. After working a normal job while creating short videos with my DSLR and learning all I could about Cinematography and lighting on my own, I decided I wanted a formal education in Cinematography and was thrilled that I could get one right here in the Twin Cities! I understood that the first year there would be slow to start but I was surprised to learn just how BASIC the Cinematography program was. Even with the facilities and equipment they have, they choose not to allow their students a focused hands-on learning experience. Again, you can learn most of what is taught at the MCTC Cinema department and the Cinematography program online or at an intensive Cinematography workshop. My time spent there as a student pursuing an education in Cinematography was costly and ultimately disappointing.

I am a current Early Education major and so far have loved my time at MCTC it is a process to get into school and possible to get in with a month before school starts but it takes patents getting to the school to do everything made it easier as well. I am now ASL Club vice President and involved in a lot of what's going on around the school

I hate this school. It is terrible. If you want a quality education do not go here. I highly recommend staying away from TON DUNCAN in the ITEC department. He is a sorry excuse for a professor, he is RUDE, INCONSIDERATE, INFLEXIBLE, and LAZY. Don't even waste your time.

I recall registering an extremely long time ago when I wasn't a student. Itbwas a nightmare getting you foot into the door, there isn't one on one assistance with it, its more of an lets sit you in a room with a large number of people and you pretty much figre it out yourself. Once started my classes I couldn't complain. The Dental Assistant program is amazing. :)

If you manage to bypass using an actual person to get into the classroom, this place is fantastic. The administrative side is lacking here. But, once you get into the classroom, the teachers are fantastic. I highly recommend this college for getting your generals at a fraction of the cost for a higher quality education.

This school is known for having teachers who bully their students and give bad grades for personal reasons. Teacher retaliation.... I have dealt with many rude professors who have tried to to embarrass me when when I asked a question in class like the other students would, but instead i was targeted and picked on which encourage the other students to pick on me. The teachers would constantly try to humiliate me in front of the class. And try to make me feel less important than the other students. I was actually yelled at by a professor in front of the classroom and blamed because my group did not show up for group presentations and I got yelled at while the rest in my group did not get yelled at. This is not the first time I have been a victim of professors taking their emotional baggage and dumping it on me. I am very uncomfortable and had to take several W (withdraw) out of my classes because of how uncomfortable I am just from being in the classroom and being bullied constantly. This is the worst school and worst experience I ever had. This school caused me so much stress and anxiety. The school is constantly full of homeless people and security guards do nothing about it. They pee in the hallways and the building constantly smells like pee. And they have mental health issues and I have been verbally attacked and threatened by them. Everyone that's is staffed at mctc should be fired I haven't met one nice decent person at all worst experience .

Unhelpful when it comes to building schedules for full time students. Does not care or try to help students understand which classes they need to take and why or how many credits they should be taking. Provides no information on how to pay for college to potential/incoming students. Incredibly slow at processing financial aid as well. Whoever is hiring staff should re-evaluate what the college stands for and what they want out of their employees because right now, MCTC is looking like a scam and that is unacceptable.

It's not the MCTC instructors or Advisors that make MCTC an horrible institution, it's certain students that are embarrassment to MCTC. Personally, I've had some really awesome instructors as well as received more than adequate service from the many the services at MCTC.

There are a couple of comments that I couldn't resist replying too. People should stop trying to apply for their pell grant two weeks prior to school starting and stop applying for your pell grant a week or two into the beginning of the semester. You are an idiot if you think your pell grant will be issued immediately, especially, if you don't allow enough time to process your application. At the latest you should at least have your pell grant submitted a month prior to the beginning of the semester.

BTW: stop asking work study students certain questions, in all fairness to the work study students, don't know the detail answers to certain questions. It's your job as a student to educate yourself and find the right person to answer your detail questions.

And another thing stop complaining because an MCTC advisor needs to take a lunch break. MCTC advisors work hard and they need to break too.

This place is garbage.

This place is garbage.

I tried to sign up for a program but the form I downloaded did not have all the information that the one they had at the college did.

As a result I could not get in.

I called ahead and made sure the forms were the same, and was told they were.

These people are morons! How can they let something like this happen?

staff neglect the students just after they registered you. Lack of communication and always short off staff in their financial office. no service for night students, and if you as a night student need a service, everywhere is closed after 4pm. This school is just wasting your money and time.

I completed the HVAC program here. It was an excellent experience. The staff can be hard on some of the students, but some of the students are not intelligent enough to do this career. If a student applies themself in this program they will be ready for employment. I have been in the trade six years, and currently make over $100,000 a year.

Since the merger in 1995 of Community Colleges with Technical Colleges in Minnesota this college has systematically destroyed most of the great technical programs it once offered. Yes, I'm bias, I taught "shop" classes here for over 20 years until in 2009 the 65 year old program I taught was closed.
Now the current Administration just continues to chop away at the heart of the technical education system Minnesota once excelled in.
Its sad to see how very few technical programs remain at this school.
They should drop the word "Technical" out of their name.

Friendly and helpful staff, many programs, and quiet places to study, and as of recent very accepting of online learning as well, perhaps one of the most flexable colleges out there.

Great school. Diverse and affordable. Great place for liberal pursuits. Lacking a bit in their science and mathematics departments though. They do not have a Computer Science track and their Mathematics department seems understaffed.

I graduated with an Associates degree years ago, and here s my take:

I enjoyed the diversity of so many students, and the support I got from them. It s easy to make friends there and it s easy to find that most have a lot in common with you. That said, for many students it was just a spot.

The educational quality was a mixed bag, with the adjunct professors being better teachers than those with tenure. I found the ones with tenure to be indifferent to the student body and uninspired professors. One particular professor was so rude to his students that several of them dropped the class, and he made derogatory comments he should have been reported on. I majored in the human services program, and I definitely believe the educational quality of that program was lackluster.

There are other community colleges out there that are much better in educational quality, but they don t have the same supports that diverse students need to thrive in college. Not the greatest school, but better at meeting the needs of diverse students.

Phenomenal teachers, excellent atmosphere to learn in. Justice, equity and fairness which encompasses EVERYONE is included in their pedagogical methods. They are extremely accommodating, and will do everything in their power to help their students succeed. Thank you, MCTC, for changing my life.

My boyfriend enrolled in 2 night classes fall 2018 to get some prereqs out of the way before going back to school for engineering. From the beginning we had problems with administration. Issues with getting ahold of people or emails back, working with people who had no idea what was going on, and people being straight up rude and unprofessional. If you work full time good luck! They do not help meet you halfway to meet outside of normal business hours for meetings about anything you need. The workload of 2 classes was impossible with a full time job and a commute - new lectures, readings, and assignments literally everyday. The drop date is the 5th day of the semester so don't miss it. We did miss it and completely withdrew after 6 business days of classes. The "partial refund" you are supposed to get is a complete joke. It's not a refund of what you paid at all but rather a prorated cost of what you owe for the semester. Don't get screwed by MCTC like we did! Take your hard-earned money elsewhere!

Horrible school. They couldn't care less about me as in individual, the financial aid office took money on my behalf and didn't even care when i went back because I was wrongly sent the bill. You get the run around with everything and no one, except for the occasional teacher, cares. Money is an unbelievably important factor when it comes to it's students, and politics run way too much. I'm still having to deal with the aftermath of the school, I wish someone would have warned me, as a minority, not to go here.

also, Financial aid hadn't came in until the end of the semester. it was way to late. No books and and impossible to do school work. they never want to talk to you unless you're bringing in more rev.

Very much a Get what you pay for kinda college. It s cheap, most classes are pretty easy to pass, but the most you can get is an associates degree, and a lot of the support staff isn t exactly thrilled about the job they have so if you re not pushing them to get what you want done they probably won t do it.

This is the worst experience I ve ever had with a college. I ve tried to be in contact with multiple staff members on moving forward in my application process and got no where. I was given many different answers to the same question. The staff seemed to just want to push me off to another person so they didn t have to deal with it. Absolutely horrible!!

Classmates have been hit or miss. Many are friendly and awesome, interested in discussing the subjects of education (for me it's programming and IT related) but then I've run into a few people who adamantly want to discuss social issues. The atmosphere is full of deep-seated racialized thinking, so be aware of that, even if you think you're going for something neutral.

Some of the staff are great. I definitely suggest the Python class with Maggie Mahan, which is one of the few reasons the school is even okay. Dr Pollock will also keep you very informed on any changes and upcoming happenings in his class, and it's probably the schools loss that he is retiring. Other classes have been either been exactly as expected, or disorganized enough to induce panic attacks many times, even at the beginning level.

Also beware, keep a close eye on your financial aid. If you return books, you may have to personally see to it that the money is actually refunded.

Im excited to start school here. I went to the bookstore to get my School ID the staff there were very nice and helpful. Plus with my ID or comes with all sorts of discounts. While signing up for everything online due to COVID-19 All of the sign-up was a breeze because the staff reaches out and make zoom meetings to help online and it makes sign-up much more bearable Thank You MCTC!

Wish I could give them zero stars. I previously had written a review and was asked to remove it by the school because I was actually telling the truth. I should not have removed it. It is no wonder the graduation rate is so low yet tuition is more than any other tech school in the area??? This school rapes you of your money, staff and certain instructors are incompetent with no desire to help students. I cannot stress enough to prospective students to seriously consider going elsewhere. I am currently a student, I have reached out to one of my instructors multiple times via his email and the online D2L discussion forums. Never reviewed a response except to inform me to drop myself out of the class. The time for my transfer will not come soon enough! I will be taking matters into the appropriate hands to get my money back!

I'm giving one star because I got a bad experience in MCTC. At first, I think its was a great school but the teacher and staff, they just care about themselves. There was one time that I was sick and I ask my sister to bring my take home math test to the teacher because she told us that she won't take late test after that day. However my sister help me bringing to her and but she decline it . She told my sister that she don't care unless I'm the one that bring it to her. Since I'm sick and can't give it to her, I receiving a low grade.
My sister told me that is not my fault, I do what I could but the teacher just being selfish.

Sometime people sick. Teacher sick too. They alway have a another teacher help them teach the class. Teacher become a loser and only care about money not the students.

When I first start school there a teacher don't allow students to use the restroom and if they do then they lose a point. So we the students had to hold it until 3 hour in that class. Also there one time, I go fix my
EServices, since I can't log in. I went to the computer room and ask a staff to help me. She told me that she will come after she finish talking on the phone. However, she been talking on the phone and loughing almost 40 min. I can't wait anymore so I ask her again. She yell at me and said, "does you not see that I still talking on the phone."

This is what I hate to become a student in MCTC. Just because I'm asian, it's doesn't mean that I'm not human. MCTC should become more responsible for their students not themselves, without the students teacher and staff are just nothing. Teacher should support their students, not to make them stuffering and struggle. Thank you. This is what of how I felt and just want to share. Hope Mctc can do better each year.

You get what you pay for. It's cheap and lets 16 year olds in. The professors intentionally waste half of class time going over the schedule so they won't have to do as much work. Some of the professors are simply racist, I'm not using that as American English where racist means jerk, I mean that in international English where racist means racist. With all that being said, I only had two professors give me unjust grades out of the 12 or so I had. The professors are of low quality and don't have all that much mastery of the material they are teaching. So why 4 stars? It fulfilled the function it was meant to have for me. I spent two years there, saved a bunch of money, then transferred to a better school. Don't think of MCTC as a place for education, think of it as a place to save money completing general education requirements that you aren't going to use much in your career anyways.

Currently in the process of signing up for spring classes-- spoke with a woman in student services who was just so rude to me it was baffling and hurtful. This was not a good first impression. It makes me nervous for what the future holds at this school. I won't state her name but just know if you were also spoken to in a negative manner you are not the only one.

Troy Dvorak is a psychology instructor and referred to my documented mental health disability crisis as skipping class! While my three other instructors were patient, kind, and worked with me to succeed, Troy was insulting and degrading and dropped me from my class hurting my transfer to another school and my financial aid.

This review is about Heidi Aldes, a staff member of MCTC.

When she was working at St. Cloud State University, she was the Interim Director of LGBT Resources.. During which, she had a history of harassment and discrimination against some volunteers. She has a long history of racism, transphobia, ableism, and serophobia. She is okay with such people who are above her, but she will slaughter anyone who is below her.

There were several people of color who entered the office to express interest in volunteering. She harassed them continually to scare them away. There were also other volunteers who tried to team up with Multicultural Services to do events. She refused every time. She said many times that she had contacted them, but she lied.

Heidi also ridiculed an autistic individual who volunteered there. This individual had many years of experience as an activist and had done outstanding work, but that did not matter to Heidi. She constantly ignored this individual, treated him like he is incompetent, destroyed his reputation to other volunteers of LGBT Resources, and harassed him to the point of severing all ties with LGBT Resources.

Heidi also actively excluded transgender people from certain events. For example, she said that transgender people are not allowed to sit on stage on Guess the Straight Person (on-campus event often held at St. Cloud). She said it was because she did not want to confuse the audience members, but her overall mistreatment of transgender people says otherwise.

There was also a volunteer who had built coalitions between an on-campus HIV organization before Heidi was Interim Director. One of the first things she did upon being hired for that position was to sever the ties. One individual whom she perceived as HIV positive was harassed by Heidi. She refused to be anywhere near this individual in fear that she would catch HIV.

In addition, anybody who disagrees with Heidi Aldes on anything gets yelled at by her. The belief can be something as simple as red vs. orange. It got to the point to where people were afraid to speak their opinions to her. They also had to pretend to always agree with her. Anyone who ever disagreed with her would be screamed at and would start getting harassed by her often. This is not how to treat anybody!

I write this review because there are three volunteers from St. Cloud that I know of who had to seek professional therapy because of psychological damage done by Heidi. I hope that MCTC reads this review and remind themselves that tigers don't change their stripes.

I have had the best time as a student at MCTC. I find it hard to believe that anyone with self-motivation and the smallest amount of determination would not succeed with flying colors. All of the instructors have been most accessible and the financial aid people at Trio and other office staff as well as student advisers are always very helpful. Love the diversity!

Got to the computer lab 10 minutes before class to print off some material. Thought that would be sufficient... It took 15 minutes for the computer to log in, and then for the internet to open. I've had this happen multiple times. This was on a Friday when most people don't even have class, and no one is using the internet. How.... Are.... The.... Computers.... So.... Slow.....

Also everything said below about the office staff, and most of the professor's is true. You're better off going somewhere else. I've heard good things about St. Paul's community college.

This is basically a Self-Service Community & Techical College witg affordable tuition and classes. Most of the college experiences a student wants have to be sought out, but MCTC is a Minneapolis staple and diverse cultural melting pot with students of all ages. I studied for my A.S. in Business Management there.

Like other reviews mentioned, there is definitely ...

Like other reviews mentioned, there is definitely a variance in talent of teaching staff. Some instructors are seriously great. Others have a bit of a superiority complex, talk down to students, and/or can't be bothered to even show up on time to their lectures. I went for the dental assistant program and feel as though Ann Lensing should reconsider her decision to go into teaching. While she clearly knows her stuff, her teaching abilities aren't great. She tends towards condescension, rambles on incessantly, and just doesn't know how to teach. At the end of the day, this is still an affordable place to get your education and training down. But things like that can make a difference between a mediocre versus a good program.

Don't even bother once you get into the school all they want to do is take your money, if you accidentally fall under academic suspension don't worry you'll never ever get to come back anyway because they'll just ignore all of your attempts to come back, even if you have a valid solid reason with witnesses and understanding that you were unable to fill the things that you needed to do and you wanted to try to come back and actually you know go to school, instead they just keep sending you rejection letters because they don't care, they just want to take the next person's money your money doesn't matter, they Already have it
