Went for trivia night, when we got there we found out they quit that. So just ordered and app and some drinks. During that time 3 other groups came in for the same thing but left as soon as they found out no trivia. Waiter said something and I told then "if you all quit that maybe you should post on social media bc that is the only reason we came". Just nothing memorable to make me go back anytime soon.

My second time here. Both times started off really good. The first time the waiter was non responsive. Allowed our food to sit and get cold. The food had been ready but he was just too lazy to do anything. The second time i ordered an omelette with fruit instead of hash and sides of bacon and avocado. My omelette arrived after my company of 4 finished eating and it had hash, no bacon, no avocado. We had also been brought an extra michelada we didn't order. They tried to charge us for the sides and the michelada.
2 stars because the bloody mary and micheladas are delicious.
Food was bland and cold. I had the steak and eggs. There were 4 in my group and it took 40 minutes to get our food. 3 of the 4 of us gor our food while 10 minutes later the 4th person got his food. Service sucked as well. Slow and not friendly. It's unfortunate because I really wanted to like this place. Looks cool and great outdoor seating. Only good thing was the music.
Disappointment. Do yourself a favor and read the other comments. I just glanced at the one "$" and saw a review from outside of Google saying they had the best hamburgers in town. Far. From. That. Maybe before the new management that has been previously said by other Googleites. Overpriced. Seems they are trying to be a speakeasy now than be a nice place to grab a bite to eat. Was not impressed with the burger.
Lowbrow has had a menu makeover with change in management. The atmosphere is more uppity and the menu is much shorter and much more expensive. The service was fine, nothing bad to say about that. I would suggest a name change to keep confusion away. I had the rigatoni bolognese and it tasted like they forgot to add any seasoning to the meat. My family ate their meals and found it to be mediocre. Not worth the price in my opinion. That being said, very pretty location, good service and decent drink selection.
Their chicken strips are delicious! We got one order with fries and one worth mashed potatoes. I personally prefer the mashed potatoes, but my husband and kids liked the fries. It's a laid back atmosphere and the kids loved playing with the old typewriter on our table. We will definitely be back!
Great location & the ambiance/decor is very Houston. Service for us was fine; we didn't feel rushed, which was great. The mild version of the spaghetti squash was way too spicy for me (I am admittedly a sissy when it comes to spicy food), but the catfish & brussels sprouts were both delicious. To their credit, they comped me for my meal since I couldn't eat it. Overall, it was a good experience and I'll probably go back at some point. As another reviewer mentioned, though, there are too many other restaurants in the area for this to become a regular haunt for me.
Chef Will Gilchriest makes delicious food and also seems to wear a lot of different hats, but all with a great attitude. The food is always amazing and priced competitively.
Just to preface- I'm reviewing this based on the brunch only. I haven't gone for lunch or dinner.
Anyways, the brunch is great. They have cheap carafes of mimosas (which instantly is a win in my book) and excellent food. My personal favorite is the eggs benedict, which comes on a biscuit instead of english muffin, which is a nice little twist. The only downside is that the service is pretty slow. The waiters are good, but the bar and kitchen are small, so they get backed up.
One thing to also note is that they are now owned by the Creek Group (Onion Creek, Cedar Creek, etc), which is the only reason I gave it another shot, and the management is now 100x better than when the FPH guy owned it.
Really great patio, set in a calm neighborhood by the menil collection, the appetizers and burgers are very good, a little pricey so it's more of an evening special event place, plenty of parking nearby
This place is nice and not too crowded in a little neighborhood. The atmosphere is nice and the waiters are nice as well. We only went to get drinks on a Sunday, but the speed of the service was lacking a little with menus taking longer than expected
Casual brunch spot that does not take advance reservations or large parties. I got a chicken spicy biscuit with a potato hash. It was good, but the service took too long to get menus and too long to wait. Also have to consider we went on peak brunch hour at 11-12. Sat in the patio, don't recommend it unless you're sitting near a fan in summer heat.
I've determined that there are two types of great burger places in Houston. There are those establishments that specialize in great burgers, and those who offer a great burger on their menu. Lowbrow falls into the latter category. And, with the lineage of the Eatsie Boys bunch, the expectations here were, indeed, high.
On Black Friday, Susan and I waltzed on over to Lowbrow. I knew I would try their "Juicy Lucy" (the great burger on a menu with salads, sandwiches, and other eclectic fare). I was sure Susan would go for the Kale Salad. But, I was wrong, and she opted for "Ms. Lucy" as did I.
The burgers were served. As I was taking photos of this masterpiece, Susan was cutting hers in half, commenting on how juicy the burger was. Then, all I heard was "THIS BURGER IS INCREDIBLE" from someone (SZR) who is not a regular burger fan as I am. So, I put down my I-phone, and took my first bite. And I never stopped biting/eating until the burger was no more. The flavors, and there were many, were absolutely delicious!
Here's the burger - Fontina and jalapeno stuffed long horn beef patties, arugula, pickled shallots, crispy shallots. Imagine all those flavors at one time on your tongue. Add cheddar cheese and crispy flavorful bacon, and you have the masterpiece that is the Juicy Lucy. DID YOU READ THAT - Fontina and jalapeno STUFFED long horn beef patties!!! The Challah Buns (very popular these days) and hand cut (crispy with meaty tender middle) fries complete the picture. I cannot describe to you the euphoria I felt as I ate this burger - true happiness personified. I was in a "happy" place, and I've been there ever since. I think I found the way towards world-peace - the "Juicy Lucy" from Lowbrow! Go and enjoy one for yourself!
Quirky atmosphere with really good food. They play movies on their projector every once in a while. They started playing 10 hours of Nyan cat one time. Thankfully the sound was off.
The food is okay, but it's all about the vibe here. When it's nice outside, it's so much fun to sit outdoors and have a drink and a meal. The burger is good and so is the grilled cheese egg in a hole. If you're walking around the museum district, it's a nice place to stop for a bite.
This place does not serve brunch all day like it says it does, very few options as what to eat, terribly slow service. Went for a friend's birthday celebration and Jessica, our waitress, did a horrible job attending us. I ordered the steak, and after waiting 30 minutes, she sends another waitress to come tell me that there is no more steaks, 30 minutes!!! It took that long to figure out they didn't have steaks?? Anf then she couldn't even come tell me herself? It's not like it was that busy. I ended up being the last one in the group to eat, cause it still took another 20 minutes to bring me a chicken sandwich, their fastest plate to bring out. My wife then ordered a Coke/Pepsi and she never bothered bringing it to her. Not going there anymore.
I had the salmon plate and a frozen mojito, both of which I was talking Into by my excellent server. I don't think I came up for air until it was gone. What an excellent entree and drink! I highly recommend checking this place out.
The mimosas are good but the service was kinda slow. There were only a few tables so it's not like it was busy at all. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and the TVs outside were on infomercials. Surely there was something better on...Like football perhaps?
This was literally the worst service I've had in such a long time. I came here last night for my birthday celebration. The food was horrible, the service was mediocre, and the waiter was rude. The vibe of LowBrow is cool- but the overall experience is not worth it.
My family + friends + alcohol saved the night, but I would not return.
Cool place inside when its not packed full of people. The burgers are good and beer is cold. The patio is nice to hang out on and people watch when the weather cooperates.
You know that commercial you see with the amazing pictures of amazing food and you get there and it's horrible.. That pic was from here. Absolutely amazing
Stopped by this place for Saturday brunch. The mimosas are a tad bit more than average but was decent. The space inside is great and offers spacious booths for friends. I ordered off their brunch menu and had the chicken and waffles. The waffle came in a fantastic Texas shape. One of the best waffles I've had in a long while. The chicken on the other hand was bland and not to my liking. However their ejjeh dish more than made up for the poorly seasoned chicken. It is honestly one of my favorite brunch dishes ever. The omelet was fluffy with plenty of flavor. The leeks kept the dish moist and delicious. The potatoes that came with the dish were also seasoned to perfection. All in all great food but could use more specialty cocktails and seasoning on their chicken wings. They do however service Bravado spice sauces which were amazing. I had the pineapple hot sauce and the blueberry--both are worth a try if you enjoy spicy sauces.
I gathered some of my girls to check this place out, they have some good beer selections, and the burger wasn't bad either. Its a small place but its perfect if you're looking for a small relaxing spot. Oh also on mondays they have a pizza and beer pitcher deal for only $20!!
We met our family there for brunch around 11am. Parking is hard to find, but they offer valet. Service was a bit slow and spotty. Had to continually ask for coffee refills. They had a DJ for the brunch crowd which made it virtually impossible to have a conversation without shouting. A DJ for brunch? Really? Food quality was spotty as well. I ordered the biscuit Benedict as did my daughter in law. I had one almost hard boiled egg and the other was fine. My daughter in law had 2 over done eggs and had to send them back. The rest of the orders were fine. My biggest complaint as was our entire table was the music was so loud. Multiple people asked for the volume to be lowered and was told they can't do that. I may never go back due to the loud club level music. It really was very annoying.
New management changed everything great about lowbrow.
Used to be my favorite place in town with a great menu and awesome atmosphere, now a fine dining experience. Really needs a name change to avoid confusion about the place.
I've been here twice and both times the service has been terrible. We received our food one hour after we ordered. The biscuits were cold and hard, the fried chicken was overly breaded. I'm so disappointed. The Lazy Daisy drink was pretty delicious.
Discovered this place years ago, and it remained my favorite place for a phenomenal, black bean burger. Went there recently and everything has changed! So if you're into the Heights/ Montrose type joint, this is no loner for you . It now has a Uptown/River Oaks feel. Yuck. They always suck the life and soul out of things. If I wanted a boring and subpar place to hangout and eat, I'd visit those areas. So I guess the Empire or the Lannister's strike again...
Lowbrow is a great place to drink a beer, especially on the patio, especially especially since they always have several Houston brews on tap. I have also had the chicken fried black bean burger (genius idea) and the kale Caesar salad both were delicious. Minus one star (it would be minus 1.5 if I could) for the service. Most of the servers seem like they either have too many tables or just really don't care. Last time I came here, I wanted to order food but only got a menu after waving down 3 servers... so I just finished my beer and paid the check. I like this place, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without adding "but the service kind of sucks."
Sooo good, I really like their chicken biscuit and grilled cheese that they have for brunch. Also the pozole is the best! Dunking grilled cheese in that is next level amazing. I haven't gone here outside of brunch though, but it doesn't get busy until maybe noon so you can find a place to sit easily inside and out during those times brunch is served.
They have valet parking, which is ridiculous, and they have their parking lot down the road blocked with cones during brunch for some reason, so you're left with parking in the street (which is fine if you get there really early). The parking lot is tiny, and valet is there likely to maximize the space.. but it seems unnecessary and I don't feel like having someone drive my car if it's only in front of the place or just down the block.
Was a beautiful day and we sat outside, the service was good but a little slow. The burgers were okay. The parking is tight. I loved the fries and the spicy mayo/ketchup that was suppose to be for the burger I think.
Since when did Low Brow become so High Brow? I miss the Juicy Lucy and reasonable prices. Great if you are looking for something a little more refined, but say goodbye to the divey local watering hole of old.
I have given this place a few tries now and just like every other reviews have mentioned, the service is pretty darn slow. I was recently there for lunch and a bit of day drinking with friends, I got myself a pitcher to share with everyone and somehow they forgot about it until I asked again about 12 minutes later and only then they brought the beer to our table. This goes the same for the food, my friends each other a burger and a sandwich. We were pretty much the only other table at the establishment but yet it took a good while for the food to come out.
Now the rant is out of the way, there are still some goods about this neighborhood bar / restaurant that's in a good corner spot. For one they have a decent selection of beer and food. But the price is a bit high for what I would pay when I could get it cheaper elsewhere. Now the food is good but nothing near the price they are charging. The interior decor and seating is really clean and nice. But the service still needs to be worked on. Maybe that's how this place will ever be, slow to the max?
Staff went above and beyond to accommodate a large group. We went on a Sunday for brunch, the food was fun and tasty. They had a Dj playing just the right music at the right volume. Really hip spot
Lowbrow has been a go to spot for me for the last few years until recently. The menu has been upgraded along with the cost. Some of the best menu items have been removed including the yummy Juicy Lucy. Last time we went the new management were in the process of changing the decor and the menu. All the unique features that I loved are gone from the interesting record collection hanging on the wall to the awesome Houston wallpaper. Not sure I will return anytime soon. Not sure I want to spend $15 for a cheeseburger.
Okay, so I never leave reviews online but my experience at Lowbrow was horrible enough to compel me to do so. Dan was our server and I don't remember ever being waited on by someone as condescending or slow as he was. At the end of our meal, I asked if it was possible to get separate checks, knowing that some establishments don't do split checks, and he proceeded to look at me as if I had three heads while speaking to me like I was 4. I then had to explain to him that I am in the industry and there is no need to talk to me like I'm stupid. On top of the rude service, he charged me twice for my sandwich, and was supposed to split the check three ways but didn't do the math right. It was an overall frustrating experience, and as a server I'm very lenient because I understand there are a million things that can throw a kink in your shift, but there was no excuse for this guy.
Definitely is taking a turn for the worse since it's inception. Apparently they are trying to "revamp" the place by making the menu more expensive and the vibe less unique. The food wasn't as good the last time we went, and the wait staff were having to scramble to keep up with the bumbling kitchen and bar, definitely not like I had ever seen Lowbrow before the "new management" took over. I am not a restaurateur, nor can I call myself an experienced critic of food in anyway, but I've lived in Houston for a long time (in the loop I mean, from the Houston area though) , and it was refreshing to see place like Lowbrow pop up when it did, serving food most of us could afford and local beer, with a fun environment that definitely fit the vibe of what Montrose used to be. Although I am severely disappointed to see the direction that Lowbrow is taking, it somewhat is indicative of how Montrose is changing, the accessible but unique places are being replaced by the expensive and bland. To the new management, I sincerely hope you do well, but you won't do it with my support, as far as I am concerned, you are now part of the savage wave of white-washed, boring, yuppie culture that has almost completely taking over Montrose. You can keep your $20 cheeseburgers, $8+ beers, and uninteresting vibe, I'll go find a new neighborhood to go hang out in.
