I was down on my luck and was told they would help me out. They require you however to fill out a form saying you looked for work every day. Most people just lie and make things up.

I had a court appearance my third day there, and decided to be honest and on the form said I had been in court so could not look for work. Was called in to see a case worker, explained what I had done that day, gave them a printout from the court verifying that.

An hour later was told I had to leave, I could not stay because I did not look for work. So much for my being honest and going to court instead of just lying like everybody else did.

Several months later I decided to try and "pay it forward" when I got work and housing again by bringing in some of my old clothes (mostly suits and dress shirts that no longer fit) so others could use them. They refused the donation, and instead asked me to donate cash.

We tried to drop off a giant donation at 7:20 and we were VERY RUDELY turned away. Their website AND google maps list their closing time as 8pm and yet we still hear "we're closed" in an aggressive voice. Never going here again. Try to do a good deed instead of dropping everything at a thrift store that doesn't benefit homeless but looks like we are donating at goodwill instead. For an organization claiming to do good, we were sure treated badly. Change your closing time or fire that person who is treating people this way. Unbelievable.

I lived here for a while after serving our country and finding out my family had left the area. It was tough but it got me on my feet. I would go to Labor Ready and work then come here to sleep. Nice people, great start for this once lost soul.

LBRM has got to be one of the most put together rescue missions I've seen, they treat everyone with such sincere kindness, they feed the homeless and hungry great food and deserts, I've done volunteering here and I've never felt so welcomed at a facility in my life, a fabulous organization to donate to for a great cause.

While waiting quietly out front for a friend who was meeting with a caseworker inside the mission, a maintenance (?) person sweeping the sidewalk, asked, rhetorically to the 5-6 people waiting out front, "You know you're not supposed to be out here, right?" I am disabled and cannot stand for extended periods of time, so I was leaning up against a low wallI. I didn't answer him, nor did anyone else. Then he said directly to me, "Are you deaf too?" I was stunned a place which calls itself a "mission" would have people who were so disrespectful to other human beings, so bigoted in their perspective of homeless or deaf people. I stepped 1 foot away from the building onto the public sidewalk and sat down. He went inside, and I clearly heard him say to someone, "There's a guy out here causing trouble."
Another man came out and said to me, "If 'they' have to ask you more than once, 'they' will call the police." He spoke as though he was not affiliated with "them," but as neither had the courtesy to introduce himself or wore any kind of visible identification, they could have been clients, ministers or just two guys walking down the street.
I had heard horrifying stories about this place from people who refused to go back & didn't feel safe. Anyone off the street can come into dormitory areas & rifle through clients' belongings stolen. The majority of homeless people I've spoken to prefer to take their chances on the streets or in jail rather than this mission, a sad commentary. I suspected these might be exagerated stories I finally experienced first hand, and now understand the disdain & dismissive attitude - the retaliatory disrespect adopted by the mission's staff. I presume they apply for & secure grants, to the exclusion of other, safer, more welcoming & more deserving organizations. I know they solicit donations from the general public, and as a "church," likely receive tax-exempt status, meaning everyone pays to support this shabby & abysmally-run operation. I supported the Long Beach Rescue Mission in the past, but will no longer, until such time as it adopts a more positive, supportive & "Christian" approach to the disadvantaged & most vulnerable in our community. This mission gives Long Beach, Christians & society as a whole, a black eye. Shame on you, Long Beach Rescue Mission.

They do Good Works.

The New Life Program, the Staff, and Jesus Christ ...

The New Life Program, the Staff, and Jesus Christ saved my life!! 25 years addicted to alcohol, 6 secular rehabs, no more then one year of continual sobriety- I was destined to die of alcoholism!! I spent one year at the Lydia House under the Guidance of God and Ms. Tonya Hubbard. As promised, if I completed what I had started my life would be transformed. I am proud to say I will have 2 years sober October 5,2016. And I have been reunited with my twin daughters that I had lost for 8 years. I now have monthly visits with them in Northern CA! I do not have cravings, my Bible is my Sword, my sisters from the mission "still sober" are my accountability sisters in Christ. Thousands of dollars were spent in 20 years to get me sober but The Mission offered me the gift of sobriety for free!! We serve an amazing God!!
