And I'm talking about the story. After all, it is important to know about the great people whose name the Synagogue bears. All the people of Kiev and guests of the city know the surname of Brodsky, well-known Kiev philanthropists.
I stumbled upon an interesting article by the author Staliy Il'evich.
Here, individual notes in abbreviated form, it may be informative.
The origin of many Jewish surnames in Ukraine is related to the place of residence of their founders. There are Berdichevsky, Zhytomyr, Vinnitsa, Umansky, Brodsky ... Brodsky - therefore, from Brod, a small town and a large shopping center in the pre-revolutionary Austro-Hungarian Galicia. Today Brody is the center of the Brody district in the east of the Lviv region.
There is no mention in any of the Soviet encyclopedic publications that a dynasty of major entrepreneurs and patrons of Brodsky originates from Brod. The answer was found in the Jewish encyclopedia of Brockhaus and Efron, from which it is known that around the XVI century, the Tvias Shore family gave the local Jewish community a number of well-known rabbis and public figures. One of them is Meire Shore, from which the surname Brodsky begins.

Meir was born in the family of Rabbi Alexander Tviasa-Shor. But he did not follow in the footsteps of his father and moved to the place Zlatopol of the Kiev province. In memory of the small homeland , he took the name Brodsky, leaving along with her his original, Shore. He was successfully engaged in commerce and 5 sons Osavil considerable inheritance. They used their father's capital successfully. But it was especially distinguished by financial abilities and charitable activities, broad enterprise, which earned the title of sugar king Israel Meirovich (Markovich) Brodsky.

After the death of his father and the division of property, he inherited a capital of 40 thousand rubles, with which he begins his sugar business.

Israel Markovich founds the Alexander Sugar Mills Association, the largest in the region with 13
sand and refineries. The main capital by the end of the 70s of the 19th century exceeded 9 million rubles.

Israel Markovich Brodsky was a financial genius and spent considerable money on charity.

The sons Lazarus and Leo expanded and developed the sugar work begun by the father. In addition to the sugar business, the Brodskys did business in the milling, brewing, and distillery industries.

The brothers' charitable activities surpassed the activities of their father.

So in the construction of the Polytechnic Institute Brodsky invested heavily. They created a Jewish school, where, in addition to general education, they studied professions as a locksmith, turner, and carpenter on the latest design machines from Germany and America. The famous Paton Electric Welding Institute started its activities there. With the money of Brodsky, the Trinity Folk House was built, now the Operetta Theater. Not far from each other, both brothers built two synagogue buildings - the choral (in the photo) Lazarevskaya and Lvovskaya - now non-existent, on the foundation of which the recently closed cinema Kinopanorama is located.
In those years there was not a single noticeable public project in which the Brodsky brothers would not take part - they unfastened considerable sums on improving the work of the first Kiev tram in Russia and on clearing the Kiev sewage system.

When Lazar Izrailevich passed away, the first covered Bessarabian market in the city was built on the bequeathed 500 thousand rubles.
And Lev Izrailevich ended his life in France in 1923.

God help you. May he exalt the people of Israel and bring salvation through the world to him. I wrote before that I was dissatisfied that I was not greeted warmly when trying to giur, but then all the nonsense and fleeting annoyance ... In my heart I wish you good. I hope I can realize my main dream - to find a teacher-kabbalist and to know the meaning of life sensually. But not in this country. With God!
