The hotel opens up with a luxurious vibe as you enter and go up some stairs to the mezzanine lobby. Staff are very helpful and courteous, ballrooms for weddings are nicely sized and clean. Parking is trouble here, but the Union Square lot is walking distance away.
Never book hotels thru hotwire. I was given a room of size of king bed next to elevator. How can u rent this room!!
Stayed three nights and loved this historic old hotel. I had read some reviews of people being disappointed that the rooms were too small. I don t know where they ve been staying in hotels but the room was quite comfortable and the great thing about the hotel is the luxurious furnishings window treatments along with the Storico would trim all around the walls and floors beautiful mirrors the bathroom of course is very small because it s a one 100-year-old hotel but it s all new except for the bathtubs marble floors I can t say enough good about this hotel. Service excellent free wine party every afternoon from 5 to 6 PM. Is much wine if you want to drink free is amazing. The only negative I have is no free breakfast and the coffee they serve in the lobby in the morning I got the last cup at 9 AM and it really didn t taste very good however coffee is easy to fine anywhere overall I was thrilled and I paid less than $200 a night for this beautiful hotel

I was here for a day conference and did not stay at the hotel. The lobby area is fairly large for a San Francisco hotel, food was very good and the conference rooms are fairly big as well. The hotel does not some renovations.

Some good and some bad. Me and my wife stayed here for my friend's wedding for one night. So first the goods, the architecture of the lobby and the banquet hall is beautiful. The view from the starlight room on the top floor is amazing. The location can't be beat. It was a short walk (7 min) from the nearest BART station. The staffs are pretty accommodating.
Now the bad part, we stayed at 11th floor, as soon as we got out of the elevator and enter the hallway, we can suddenly sense this bad smell, it smells like either like a mildew or a old vacuum cleaner that hasn't changed the dust bag for months, that kind of smell. I know this is an very old building, but the smell is pretty offensive, please invest some air freshener for your hallway. Fortunately the air smell a bit nicer after entering to our own room.
You pay for location and not much more. Rooms don't have refrigerators or microwaves. If you can't use the elevator because of some event going on in the lobby, the stairs are narrow. Its in a great location though.

The billing is not accurate, They will put unnecessary charge on your credit card and will give you a chase around to get it refunded. The bartender is very rude (The dike looking girl) Bad experience. we pay so much for the room. The ceiling was leaking when we get to our room, they have to charge me me double because of their inconvenience
Lovely hotel. Great central location. The rooms where well maintained and quiet. The most friendly and helpful staff I have come across in years. They did a lovely job decorating for the holidays (what a amazing lobby!!). We missed the evening wine reception and they gave is a free glass later that night. I was expecting to pay a ton but the rates where extremely reasonable.

The hotel was a good price but this hotel really deserve a 2.5 stars. First the elevator issues, the elevator takes years to come ... And every time it's packed. The hotel is in a great location but the rooms really need to get renovated. The bathroom showers have low water pressure. The carpets are really dirty, I doubt it gets cleaned. The design of the rooms is extremely creepy, there's these photos hanged on the wall that make the room feel creepy. The smell of the bathroom (this could just be my room ) have a really foul smell. since I am not staying here for long, I think it is bearable but it really smells like a public bathroom that's never cleaned. The beds are extremely soft, your back might end up hurting. Overall if you want to sleep here for a few nights, it's not a bad deal. But anything over 3 nights, you might want to find another place.
I don't even want to give this place a 1 star. In one word: classless! Absolute disgrace to use this Historic hotel and employ the worst staff. Caroline and Alonso were the absolute worst. Unbelievable how they disregarded my complaint. After waiting 1 hour in a room that wasn't ours because ours wasn't ready...and then leaving our bags curbside the entire time on the CURB!! No apology. No phone call. I asked for my bags and had to dun down and get all 6 bags myself, a guest on the elevator had to help me... I will never stay here again. Even though I love the lobby area and the bar. I would NOT recommend this place!
Really enjoyed my stay here at the Drake. The accommodations were very very nice and the service was awesome.
Great location, near Union Square, and a great price on Hotwire. There is a free wine hour from 5 to 6. Only issue was that we had to ask for towels because they forgot to put some in our room; also we were given a queen sized bed which was a little smaller than we would have preferred.
This classy hotel was a real pleasure to stay at during a Conference at the Moscone Center. The area was well light and perfectly located. The trolley was accessible not far away and it was also a great departure point to visit the city. Inside, you'll find a reception area with a great looking restaurant. The rooms were disposed as to make you feel like you were at home with grandeur.
This is a great historic property. Incredible views. They had an elevator down on a holiday weekend which made for some lines and full elevators but overall gorgeous and great staff.
Den of thieves. Stole 30 cses of wine left in baggage area. Moved to lost and found and management after 90 days dank it.

Centrally located, with an older feel. Room is a bit small but since the property isn't new I can slightly overlook that. (EDIT: WiFi was horrifically spotty & the worst water pressure in a shower ever, although that could be California water guidelines of some kind.) However, in its current condition, there is zero possibility of getting a 5 stars rating when the elevators run at glacial speed. Imagine being on the 10th floor or higher (we were) and having to wait approx 5 mins every time you want to go either up or down. I know how critical that sounds -- I really do -- but that takes a bite out of your vacation. You go up & down 4x (2 round trips each day), and that's really unacceptable not to mention well beyond what should be expected of the experience & charm of an older hotel / property. I'm going to regret hitting "submit" but someone needs to recognize how serious this is. It's not a simple oversight. (EDIT: Yes, there were signs posted saying they re being worked on, but we were there for 4 week days and saw no evidence of work.)
Being at the location is ideal if you want to have access to the heart of San Francisco. The rooms are great and have every thing you need for travel. Just bring your clothes and they have the rest.

Service is lacking for the price you pay to stay. Over 24 hours to get a blocked toliet fixed that was never fixed in our stay. $65 to park as paying hotel guest! No hot water in our entire our stay. Only just warm water. The most uncomfortable bed i have slept in.
The hotel design and decor is beautiful and elegant. There was a large middle-age and older crowd for a social holiday event lounging in the lobby/ bar just up the steroids from the door. It looked like a great time for older wine enthusiasts or socialites. The bar space next to the entrance was limited and unfortunately, a simple gin and tonic was quite pricey.
My family stayed here one night because my wife had work in San Francisco The next day and see made us easy. We grabbed a good price on Hotwire and since we arrived we liked it. The room was small but the workers were all very friendly and they had free drinks in the afternoon and free coffee in the morning. We would like to be able to stay here on another occasion.
This is the first place I ever saw anyone picketing. The workers were unhappy about their wages and the way they were treated. I joined in on the picketing for a picture.

For the price, I thought the Sir Frances Drake was pretty good. I think the rooms were clean, but not very modern. I stayed here for business so my company got a good hotel rate. Great location though- central to shopping, etc.

Small rooms, room service almost non existent. Outdoor hanger out twice for coffee in the morning and was never picked up. Even called and notified second day! No coffee in room! Ice machine didn't work on our floor! Won't be back

The lobby of this hotel and overall look is great! I love Kimpton hotels... Generally. The problem with this hotel for me is the rooms and bathrooms are small and I definitely didn't feel the Kimpton vibe I generally get. I've never stayed at this one before so I don't know if its because Kimpton got taken over by a larger company recently or if this one just is that way. I don't remember smelling the normal Kimpton smell or if it just because I wasn't paying attention. Overall it's a great hotel but just not up to the Kimpton standards in my opinion.
Do not stay here ! Terrible service at the front desk. Manager was no help! Booked two rooms two weeks in advanced and the hotel was overbooked so I was out of a room and I was told by the manager he will not wave the cancellation fee, to go find another hotel. What kind of a business are you running here. The concierge told me they were overbooked by 10 rooms. Terrible service I refuse to give them my money.

The location is great, right in the heart of things. The room itself is nice and well appointed. The bathroom though is small and cramped. There is not enough room just for basic toiletries while getting ready as there is nearly no counter space.
