If you're down in Torquay and you don't visit this...

If you're down in Torquay and you don't visit this Cavern, then you're mad! This is one of the best places I've ever visited in the South West. Ok it's really come on over the years as it's now a Unesco world heritage site, but when I first visited 40 years ago there was hardly a thing there and you wouldn't have known it was there as it's surrounded by Flats n Houses.
You book onto a tour and your Guide gathers you round and takes you along the path through the caves. They give a really good basic history of the caves and the people that have lived there and those later that excavated and explored. There are some displays towards the end of the tour and they're easy to read and use for all.
On site the carpark is medium sized, then there's the cafe with a shop. Everything is well kept and clean, prices are reasonable and it's what you'd expect for Torquay.
Me n the Wife pulled up on our Motorcycles and there was nowhere for us to park, so I had a word with a staff member and she phoned through to the manager and asked where we could park, just don't park in the car bays and it's free for Bikes, Bonus! So yep just proves that it's well run and all are considered for a visit.
Give it a few years and I'll go back and do it all again, bloody pleasure to visit.

Very nicely executed tour of the caves. I'm an avid cave explorer and compared to my last experience in Spain this was absolutely perfect. Lit well and narrated even better. Must see and great time!

An outstanding natural wonder. This is a large and remarkable cave network. A great place to visit at all times of year. Very dark and enclosed however, so possibly not suitable for very young children. Most of the network is highly accessible, so the elderly or disabled may still be able to enjoy this attraction.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this amazing place! Considering we (me and my mum) only popped in to kill a bit of time before heading back to Kent, we enjoyed it way more than we thought we would. Our guide, Ursula, was very friendly, passionate and entertaining, and so knowledgeable. We came out an hour later awe inspired! Cannot recommend this tour, or Ursula the guide, highly enough. She really has got her best job the world, and it shows in her tours

Beautiful caves, Shame that you are only allowed to see so little of them. The "guided" tour is about 1 hr long and the guide we had on the day was informative Although his jokes were an acquired taste (pray he never does stand up). My biggest problem with this tour is just how little your actually going to see of the caves, The cave system is huge and has spectacular large open spaces but unfortunately these are not on the tour. I would love to see these caves completely opened up and without the guides there, Ideally the caves would be open to wander through with guides at special and significant places to answer any questions. All in all its a lovely place to visit just dont expect to be seeing the whole cave system as you will only see 15% of it.

What a great place to visit. We have been to a few caves but this had an excellent little addition in one of the caves...will save what it is for when you visit! Defo recommend. Our tour guide was Izzy, friendly, factual and throughly great guide. The exhibitions at the end was nice little touch. Food looked yummy in the cafe but price does reflect that.

It was fun, our kids enjoyed it, the tour guide definitely made it, he was very amiable and quite funny. The caves were interesting, but your only in their for about an hour. Outside there's a nature trail where you can spot stuff and build a den. Cafe sells nice food too. It was a good place to go on a rainy day, but definitely book online and save a few quid, parking can be tricky as the car park fills up quickly and you have to park on the rd.

Only managed about an hour and a half tops in the place. Wished there was more to see but our guide Ali was very informative and made it really worthwhile. Didn't get to see the outside area due to the rain. Saved a few pounds booking online that morning which made it a bit more value for money. All that history in one area - brill

Just had a lovely tour through the caves with Tom who was fantastic at making rocks interesting! They took social distancing and hygiene seriously which made it more comfortable from that aspect. It was great to learn about the long history of the caves from how nature made them, animals used them and humans blew them up with dynamite. Would definitely recommend as somewhere to visit during a trip to Torquay

Interesting place to visit if you re a local or a tourist. Tour was very informative and the guide was good and added to the experience. It would have been nice to be able to wander the caves by ourselves but understandably you can t as it s an obvious safety risk.

Went there to see with our boys, it was brilliant, the caves really make it feel that you're somewhere totally different, the elves were amazing and was class,
Really well organized
The mulled wine and mince pie is a nice touch for the adults.
The games the boys received we're spot on, they loved playing them when we got home.
A great afternoon and one I'd recommend to families.
Great atmosphere.

Total waste of time visiting. As instructed by the website as a single person I rang up to check about tours and was told there was plenty and that I wouldn't be able to book as a member of the TCCT. When I arrived the next afternoon was told as I was alone and no one had booked for 4 pm I would have to wait. Then at 4pm I was told I couldn't go. I was offered and accepted a ticket on the ghost tour as a replacement, which was then withdrawn by the management from what I can tell. Can't criticise the girl who served me but as a supporter of local business and the local countryside trust I can't recommend based on my experience. Not only that but I drove from Paignton so it cost me over an hour of my time and a couple of pounds in fuel.

My husband and I had a super Devon cream tea followed by a superb tour of the cavern by David. He made the history and Geology come alive and I would thoroughly recommend a trip here to enhance a holiday.

We went to the first ever showing at the cave cinema and would highly recommend it to anyone! It was a great experience, you're seated in deck chairs which is a brilliant idea so everyone gets a good view of the screen and the sound was great. Well done to whoever decided to introduce the cave cinema and I hope it will now become a regular event. We for sure will definitely be back!!!

About Kents Cavern Ltd

Kents Cavern Ltd: Discover the Wonders of Prehistoric Life

Kents Cavern is a prehistoric cave located in Torquay, Devon, England. It is one of the most important and well-known archaeological sites in Britain, with a history that dates back over 400 million years. The cave has been home to ancient humans for thousands of years and is now an award-winning visitor attraction that offers tours, a shop, cafe and visitor centre.

The History of Kents Cavern

The story of Kents Cavern begins over 400 million years ago when the area was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, layers of sediment built up on the seabed and eventually formed limestone rock. Around 2 million years ago during the Ice Age, glaciers advanced across northern Europe and caused sea levels to drop dramatically. As a result, rivers cut deep valleys into the limestone rock creating caves such as Kents Cavern.

The first evidence of human occupation at Kents Cavern dates back around 500,000 years ago during the Lower Palaeolithic period. Archaeological excavations have revealed stone tools made by early humans who used them for hunting and butchering animals.

During the Middle Palaeolithic period (around 250-40 thousand years ago), Neanderthals lived in Kents Cavern. They left behind evidence such as flint tools and animal bones which suggest they were skilled hunters who used fire to cook their food.

In more recent times (around 10 thousand years ago), people from Mesolithic times visited Kents Cavern to collect water from its underground streams which were believed to have healing properties.

Visiting Kents Cavern Today

Today visitors can explore this fascinating cave system on guided tours led by knowledgeable guides who will take you through narrow passageways lined with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years.

As you walk through these ancient chambers you will learn about how early humans lived here during different periods in history including how they hunted animals using stone tools or cooked food using fire pits inside the caves themselves!

In addition to guided tours there are also interactive exhibits at our visitor centre where visitors can learn more about prehistoric life including hands-on activities like flint knapping or making fire using traditional methods!

Our shop sells souvenirs such as fossils or replica stone tools while our cafe serves delicious locally sourced food including cream teas made with clotted cream from nearby farms!
