Went on the tour today with my wife and 5 year old. Something for everyone with very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging tour guides and even a really nice cafe with plenty of seating to start/finish the tour with. NOT just a tourist trap and we'll worth a visit.

Loved the tour. interesting caves. nice cafe on site. however it's a small building and car park very small so ended up quite far down the road on street parking. so pick your day and timing well. If it wasn't for the parking would have given it 5 stars.

This is an excellent place to take children's, especially when the weather is wet or cold. If you ever get the chance to see The Butterfly Theatre Company perform Shakespeare in the caves then you should really take advantage of that. It's an awesome experience. You would be standing for the hour long performance as you follow the cast through the caves.

Fabulous experience of the guided cave tour, humourous and educational from the tour guide. Stunning scenery from either inside the Cafe or from outside the seated terrace area overlooking down into the Combe. Birds of prey happily lofting about close by or in the distance. Very peaceful and tranquil. Also a wooded trail although not ventured. Cafe offers a good menu with no fuss prices rounded to the pound.....no 99p's or 49p's. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing wasn't too much to ask for. Worth another visit!!!

Had a lovely few hours here. The group size we went round with was good. Cara, our tour guide was great, good sense of humour and very knowledgeable. We booked tickets online which saved money. You don't book a time so you can go whenever you want. We did the same with a cream tea and saved money on this too. The scones are OK, nothing special. There are a few fun things for younger children to do as well.

About Kents Cavern Ltd

Kents Cavern Ltd: Discover the Wonders of Prehistoric Life

Kents Cavern is a prehistoric cave located in Torquay, Devon, England. It is one of the most important and well-known archaeological sites in Britain, with a history that dates back over 400 million years. The cave has been home to ancient humans for thousands of years and is now an award-winning visitor attraction that offers tours, a shop, cafe and visitor centre.

The History of Kents Cavern

The story of Kents Cavern begins over 400 million years ago when the area was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, layers of sediment built up on the seabed and eventually formed limestone rock. Around 2 million years ago during the Ice Age, glaciers advanced across northern Europe and caused sea levels to drop dramatically. As a result, rivers cut deep valleys into the limestone rock creating caves such as Kents Cavern.

The first evidence of human occupation at Kents Cavern dates back around 500,000 years ago during the Lower Palaeolithic period. Archaeological excavations have revealed stone tools made by early humans who used them for hunting and butchering animals.

During the Middle Palaeolithic period (around 250-40 thousand years ago), Neanderthals lived in Kents Cavern. They left behind evidence such as flint tools and animal bones which suggest they were skilled hunters who used fire to cook their food.

In more recent times (around 10 thousand years ago), people from Mesolithic times visited Kents Cavern to collect water from its underground streams which were believed to have healing properties.

Visiting Kents Cavern Today

Today visitors can explore this fascinating cave system on guided tours led by knowledgeable guides who will take you through narrow passageways lined with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years.

As you walk through these ancient chambers you will learn about how early humans lived here during different periods in history including how they hunted animals using stone tools or cooked food using fire pits inside the caves themselves!

In addition to guided tours there are also interactive exhibits at our visitor centre where visitors can learn more about prehistoric life including hands-on activities like flint knapping or making fire using traditional methods!

Our shop sells souvenirs such as fossils or replica stone tools while our cafe serves delicious locally sourced food including cream teas made with clotted cream from nearby farms!
