A good place to visit and great tour guide ( Simon ) would have loved to have more time in the caverns and maybe a little cheaper considering the tour was just under an hour long, we were only on a short break from Cornwall so we had to cram in a lot of places in our time in Torquay.

Spent a great afternoon here. Tour of caves was about an hour, and Alan, the guide was really informative, and included interesting bits for the kids. Our son can struggle with the dark, but managed it - kids 6 and above would enjoy it. Definitely worth a visit. Also woodland trail, nice cafe, and exhibition area. Staff all really friendly - Ursula was particularly kind to our son.

We have been here before. The caves are just excellent! This year though the guide was very good - Simon. He made it even better. We noticed the staff being very friendly too and putting themselves out for people . The kids enjoyed everything including the outside trial.. They also loved becoming members of the tribe and having their faces painted. We enjoyed the cream tea in the cafe - just loved the savoury version of it with cheese scones and pickle.

Is a nice place high up and have a lovely view. The photo I have is not of the inside but of the view. They have a tour on the other side of the caves history and artifacts from thousands of years ago. It is also a nice place to get afternoon tea.

Bern here twice now. It is a must if you are stopping near to Torquay and you haven't visited before. These are the best caves that I have seen in the UK. DO NOT pay to go to see Stumpcriss Caverns in Yorkshire! They are expensive and a tiny poor exhibition in comparison to Kents Caverns

Our guides ability to convey history and science effectively and adding a few jokes into the mix made this an excellent experience overall. The food (Chai Latte and Cake) was top notch too.
The only let down was activities advertised on website for kids either had no one around to engage with the kids or was so basic that the kids don't like it. The walking trail and searching for gems were a complete letdown. If they can sort this out, it will be a 5* experience.

Nice little trip into the caverns. Beautiful. Marred only by the fact that the Devon cream teas lacked a fruit scone option. Plain scones may be to some people's tastes but not mine. Not mine I say. I hope this can be sorted out for the benefit of future visitors. I may return myself in future should this be rectified promptly

Been a visit to this cave system. Its just as interesting a Cheddar gorge but on a smaller scale. Its nice to find out about who lived in Illsham valley 10's of thousands of years ago before some of the current famous residents. Relaxing tour. Not one you want to rush. Some outdoor gardens and scenic woodland walks nearby. Not far from the scenic Meadfoot beech road and famous landmark Thatcher Rock.

As a former Torbay resident, after about 25 years this was my first visit to Kents Cavern - it was a shame I hadn't seen it sooner! The caves have a fascinating story behind them and there is plenty to see and do for all ages. Our guide for the tour Michael was very thorough and entertaining to the mixed group we had, giving us lots of interesting facts and jokes along the way. Although I did not visit the restaurant it was clean and there appeared to be a good range of reasonably priced food and drink. 1 star is knocked off as parking is payable and the toilets appeared to be in need of an upgrade. Overall a very enjoyable visit and somewhere I'd recommend for all ages.

Fantastic. Loved hearing the history of the caves. Really interesting tour. Not good for small children though. Not really for under about 4 years old. Cold & dark in places. Not suitable for buggys although you can take them.

The caverns were well lit and the tour guide was interesting and knowledgeable. The tour itself lasted a full hour and took in plenty of interesting information and caves. The mascot of the caverns, Cavog the caveman, was great with the kids and posed for pics, occasionally chasing the adults and having fun which added to the charm of the place. The 'added extras' of the brass rubbing area, tribal mask decorating, fossil finding and woodland trail were great for our kids (3 and 5). We had 50% discount vouchers through the andrex puppy points promo which kept the cost down. There's a cafe on site which we didn't try but looked pretty busy. The staff were great with the kids.

A nice relaxed tour of the caves. The tour lasted around 45mins and felt a bit rushed is my only criticism. The tour guide was lovely and engaged the small crowd well . Sitting in the garden with a cider was a good start to the trip.

About Kents Cavern Ltd

Kents Cavern Ltd: Discover the Wonders of Prehistoric Life

Kents Cavern is a prehistoric cave located in Torquay, Devon, England. It is one of the most important and well-known archaeological sites in Britain, with a history that dates back over 400 million years. The cave has been home to ancient humans for thousands of years and is now an award-winning visitor attraction that offers tours, a shop, cafe and visitor centre.

The History of Kents Cavern

The story of Kents Cavern begins over 400 million years ago when the area was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, layers of sediment built up on the seabed and eventually formed limestone rock. Around 2 million years ago during the Ice Age, glaciers advanced across northern Europe and caused sea levels to drop dramatically. As a result, rivers cut deep valleys into the limestone rock creating caves such as Kents Cavern.

The first evidence of human occupation at Kents Cavern dates back around 500,000 years ago during the Lower Palaeolithic period. Archaeological excavations have revealed stone tools made by early humans who used them for hunting and butchering animals.

During the Middle Palaeolithic period (around 250-40 thousand years ago), Neanderthals lived in Kents Cavern. They left behind evidence such as flint tools and animal bones which suggest they were skilled hunters who used fire to cook their food.

In more recent times (around 10 thousand years ago), people from Mesolithic times visited Kents Cavern to collect water from its underground streams which were believed to have healing properties.

Visiting Kents Cavern Today

Today visitors can explore this fascinating cave system on guided tours led by knowledgeable guides who will take you through narrow passageways lined with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years.

As you walk through these ancient chambers you will learn about how early humans lived here during different periods in history including how they hunted animals using stone tools or cooked food using fire pits inside the caves themselves!

In addition to guided tours there are also interactive exhibits at our visitor centre where visitors can learn more about prehistoric life including hands-on activities like flint knapping or making fire using traditional methods!

Our shop sells souvenirs such as fossils or replica stone tools while our cafe serves delicious locally sourced food including cream teas made with clotted cream from nearby farms!
