I have never posted a complaint like this before, but unfortunately my wife and I had a terrible experience with this company that has compelled me to warn others to stay away.
We hired Kaaterskill back in January 2019 to help repair the damage caused by a water leak in our home in the Hudson Valley. The clear understanding was that they were going to shepherd us through the construction and perhaps make some additional improvements.
A few months down the trail, the person from Kaaterskill in charge of our project (let s call him Project Manager 1) informed us that he would like to hire someone who lived closer to our home to be there on a more regular basis, since he lived 1.5 hours away. Of course, Project Manager 1 never mentioned this to us when we hired him, and we were already $5,000 down the rabbit hole part of which was for the hourly rate he was charging to travel 3 hours to and from our home. We reluctantly agreed, with the understanding that (1) Project Manager 1 would hand-select the person, (2) Project Manager 1 would still be actively supervising the project, (3) Project Manager 1 would minimize double-billing and (4) we would ultimately be looking to Project Manager 1 for final signoff in respect of the work done. Project Manager 1 highly recommended someone (let s call him Project Manager 2) and assured us endlessly that all was going well.
Since this is a second home, we were not there to oversee the progress; however, in June my wife decided to spend a week at the house to make sure things were moving as we had been told. During that week, on a daily basis, one or more sub-contractors would arrive to meet with Project Manager 2; however, Project Manager 2 would never be there, because something came up . My wife then contacted Project Manager 2, who said that he could stop by at 5am the next morning, but that was the only time he could come. My wife agreed and woke up at 4:30am so she could meet Project Manager 2, yet again Project Manager 2 did not show, because something came up. I m not quite sure what can come up at 5am, but I would guess that it was the snooze button.
All the while, Project Manager 1 from Kaaterskill (who is supposed to be overseeing Project Manager 2 closely) has no idea what is going on. My wife contacted Project Manager 1 to complain, at which point we then learned that Project Manager 1 had never worked with Project Manager 2 before, even though he came so highly recommended. When we asked him whether he would be billing us for the time spent to find a replacement for Project Manager 2, without hesitation, he replied yes .
At this point, I was astounded. Project Manager 1 made a bad decision and had no intention to rectify it in a more appropriate manner. He was also comfortable billing us for his time to find a replacement when he did not have any more knowledge than we did as to who in the area would be best to use.
In addition, when we started receiving quotes for various items, they were coming in two to three times more than what he initially estimated when we first hired him.
It is now August, no work has actually occurred in our home, and we are over $10,000 in the hole on this project. I should probably mention that almost $1,000 of Project Manager 1 s invoiced timelines occurred prior to our delivery of the executed contract to him. It is not clear to me how anyone can validate that kind of billing, but Project Manager 1 seems to be standing by it.
To say that we are distraught about what has happened would be an understatement. I work in the service industry and could never get away with making such grave errors without making concessions to my client to make it up to them.
These people are unapologetic, arrogant and not looking out for your best interests. You would be significantly better served by someone else.
