We drove 30 minutes just to come here and we had THE BEST CONCH FRITT IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! great service, great food, clean, and a great atmosphere. I highly recommend eating at Captain Jim s!
I was disappointed at first. I wanted crab legs and they didn't have any. Only had key lime pie because oven not working. Fine for me but no dessert my husband liked. ALTHOUGH my husband enjoyed blackened snapper and I had shrimp and grits. Even if you don't like grits ask for a sample of these. I hate grits but these ain't no ordinary grits...lol. They were actually good. So even though I didn't get what I originally went for, what I had was awesome!
Went there twice, love it, the food is plenty... and delicious!
Totally surprised when I walked through the door. Sharp place. Clean all over. Fresh hot food. Friendly staff.
We loved the old Captain Jim's and when craving Oysters for my late birthday lunch I was happy to find out that they reopened. Met the new owner and very pleasant. The staff was great, friendly and offered attentive service. We were happy that the food was also delicious. The oysters and stone crabs were fresh and delish. The crab cakes had plenty of crab, and the shrimp and grits were delish. We recommended a little more "south" to the shrimp and grits just for a little more flavor but overall we were happy and will return.
The new ownership has changed everything, watch out for sneaky girls in the front counter when ordering stone crabs, they will put small ones in the basket as they send them to be cracked in the kitchen, big surprise when you get home. Ask them to show them to you one by one before the crack them. That never happened with the previous owner, never!
Good food and service. The portion size a bit small for the price.
Love the hush puppies. Good seafood. Kind of pricey.
My boyfriend loved the place, Decent prices. I got the Boston Baked fish, Was fried then baked, was super soggy I ended up eating the fish out of the breading and throwing it away. I'm sure other dishes are better. No problem with any other food.
Awesome, giant crab cakes, prongs, beans and rice, good jazz music in the background. Just had a great time there at Captain Jim's seafood
Everything was delicious and fresh. We got the fried Mac&cheese , mahi mahi, fish tacos and the fish sandwich. Cute restaurant with a very friendly staff.
I went to Captain Jim's twice. My first experience was better than my second. First visit, I had the mussels, grouper and bread pudding. Everything was pretty good but the second visit was not at all. We had an order of bread before our meal. We receive what appeared to be burn buns, the mussels(the ones pictured are from my first visit) were overcooked and dried out & the scampi was bland/tasteless. Our server's service wasn't the best either. We ordered a slice of key lime pie which was $5.99 but she charged us $42 for a whole one and included the $15 for the mussels I sent back to the kitchen so we had to wait for that to be corrected. More than likely we won't return to this establishment because there are several other options in South Fl. to get better seafood & service.
My husband bought yellow fin sushi grade tuna from their fish market today at $15.99 a lb. I cooked it the same night (light marinade and flash seared) it was disgustingly fishy! It was off. I will not buy fish from there again.
Excellent Food quality and service. We came here from Baltimore MD for vacation. It was worth it. Thank you.
EXCELLENT FOOD at reasonable prices. I had the fillet yellowtail snapper and my friend had the shrimp sandwich..FANTASTIC
Food is ok but food is over priced. I was shocked when I got the bill. Not going back!
The SPECIAL tasting sea foods, you would have to travel all the way to Joe Stone Crab South Beach... Is served in Captain Jim on West Dixie and 129th street in the Beautiful City of North Miami... Ever since I discovered Captain Jim, I've had no reasons to travel to Joes... Not a competition for Joe Stone Crab, BUT A. PERFECT MATCH!
Nice update building and beautiful on the outside and inside and the food was fabulous
Just the kind of unpretentious spot I wanted to hit. I had the fish sandwich.
New Ownership
Another great seafood spot that's # 1 in North Miami
Tad pricey
Update to the owners reply: Being that I am jazz bass player, I know the difference between music and muzak sir...and you sure weren't playing Coltrane when I was in there. As far as the dining experience, I look forward to the Anthony Bourdain treatment the next time I go, where I will be happy to revise my rating.
Same price as several "higher-end" comparable places, but lacking the "higher-end" component, such as food preparation, ambience, etc. Not sure what the hype is besides the "freshness". Any restaurant that serves at this price, better at least have fresh fish. And I hope you enjoy elevator music, because the owner sure does.
Delicious!! Never thought I'd be so surprised by such amazing food without all the fancy surroundings and high prices. We'll be back!
Went today, 1/6, and they are still closed. Guess I'll try again next year.
I used to go here years ago. It was a vibrant, busy, well stocked fish-market-to-table gem of unpretentious delight. The seating area has expanded and the market side has shriveled to barely five items. The food is not terrible, but presentation is hardly their concern. Sadly, it is just an overpriced, dreary, run down waste of time, now. The wait staff was attentive, at least.
The food does not meet price expectations. Taste is "ok". Not memorable or awesome. I would go there if I didn't have any other place. It is not expensive, it is just not THAT exquisite.
They remolded it but that is like lipstick on a pig. The food is alright but the staff is the worst.
Went here with my father to get lunch, wait staff where very rude, chef burned food. And caught attitudes and did not want to recook it. Owner is very racist worst experience very!
It was great the staff vn and the food was absolutely delicious don't miss out on this it's great you will love it.
Captain Jim's is certainly no longer the small seafood market with a few seats and modest menu that it used to be, but it's reinvented itself into a seafood restaurant serving fresh Florida-forward food with a Caribbean influence. They've done a great job with the renovation and created a formidable menu that can stand up to the best casual seafood restaurants in South Florida and the Keys. Their food embodies exactly what Florida seafood is all about. The fresh oysters were outstanding. The cracked conch was just phenomenal. I lived in the Bahamas for a period of time and have spent a lot of time there growing up and this cracked conch stands up to the best I've had and certainly are the best I've had in Florida. The lobster mac and cheese balls were excellent, we were pleasantly surprised. The fish is fresh off the boat and they offer mahi, grouper, hogfish, lobster, and shrimp, among others. I had the fried mahi sandwich which was lightly fried and bit less crispy that what I prefer but it was delicious. The service was attentive, friendly, and timely. The atmosphere has a uniquely Florida vibe and was spotless. They still have a small area with fresh seafood on ice for purchase. This is one of the few places left in South Florida serving fresh off-the-boat seafood in a casual atmosphere at a reasonable price. As a South Florida native, it's great to have a local seafood place that makes you feel like a local again and doesn't treat you like a tourist with tourist prices. Overall, a fantastic place for fresh seafood and I would enthusiastically recommend visiting.
First impressions are lasting impressions.... And this place made quite the first impression!!! This place is impeccable from the tables to the restrooms. The service here from the chef and the wait staff was great! Everyone greeted us with smiles on their faces and made us feel at home. Upon ordering our food, the plates came out quickly and the food was very fresh!!! I highly recommend things place and cannot wait to return!!!
This darn place is not even open. I drive an HR in a half in traffic and pull up to what looks like an abandoned rat infested dump. We we're so hungry our stomachs started to eat themselves and the dragons were coming out of the dungeons. We found another place a bit far away but it was great.
Food is tasty. Service is also good. However I do have to take off 3 stars for the value. 13.99 for like a total of 15 small mussels. 7.99 bowl of soup is the same size like a cup. Considering the location I do consider it an overpriced restaurant, especially when restaurant on ocean drive is serving bigger volume with the same price.
The food was great prices were good will come back if in Miami
Everything was super fresh and delicious. Had prawns with corn mash. The prawns were seasoned with a very tasty sauce. The corn mash is kept neutral. The tacos were also delicious.
The hush puppies were the best we ate on our 2.5 week tour. We recommend.
Great fresh Seafood, made from scratch soups. I. Am glad that they reopened.
Traveled an hour to get there, but it was closed for renovations. This was in July. I'm not saying the restaurant was bad, but the experience was. I was in Miami on business and lodging in N. Miami. While downtown, I asked my business associate for a good seafood restaurant in N. Miami. He recommended Captain Jim's. I went on line, and there was no indication it was closed for renovation. So I drove for an hour -- you know the traffic in Miami is slow -- and was disappointed when I arrived. So this rating does not reflect the quality of food. But for all businesses, it is good to keep your web presence updated with closures. If you're good, people will recommend you, and you don't want to disappoint customers.
A very clean and friendly environment, also the fish was fresh and tasteful.
Their mussels are fantastic. Hoping for good things to come with the new owners. Waiting patiently.
Be aware of these reviews. Note that after every one star rating there it is a 5 stars one. Very suspicious.
This place has very very horrible customer service , I will never visit this place again and will not recommend it.
Kinda pricey but awesome selection and quality wasn't bad.
Oh wow, keep up the good job guys! Try their fish of you have a chance to stop there.
An unbelievable dining experience!!! Absolutely delicious seafood!!! Our server Gabriel and Chef Keno provided remarkable service, making sure we enjoyed our meal!!! If your a lobster fan, you MUST dine on their unforgettable fried lobster!!! Will be our family dining destination for many lunches/dinners
This is one of the best seafood restaurants in South Florida. The seafood is always fresh and delicious, the servers are friendly and attentive, plus this is a very casual place. It still has some of that old Florida charm to it.
We had three separate tickets. Fish tacos were PHENOMENAL. absolutely delicious. We also got fish fingers and fish dip. The dip came with crackers, not tortilla chips, but was very VERY good. Third plate was lobster bisque, which didn't cater to any of my groups tastes, so I can't blame the restaurant. Service was fast and friendly, restaurant was clean. Will 100% be back for more!!!
Delicious and fresh food , lobster mac n cheese is to die for
Best seafood so fresh atmosphere and staff are cool
Place order with caution. We've made four orders from this restaurant in the past for the same item on the menu, but each time the food quantity and quality degraded over time. The salmon was significantly under cooked an the vegetables add-on was barely cooked and turned rock solid hard. **I understand things happen but its unacceptable when management appear to not care when a customer attempts to - politely - address the issue directly with restaurant. Luckily, doordash resolved the issuse on their behalf. One positive is just that the restaurant is quick with orders.
The grilled salmon with bed of spinach was amazing and the blackened mahi was great!!
Got my first meal here today during my break from school. I got a crab cake sandwich win fries. They personalized the sandwich and it was so fresh and amazing even by the time I got home. Prices are very reasonable and I ll definitely be back. As you can see I couldn t wait to have a bite before taking a picture.
First trip back with new owner, brunch was excellent, I recommend to all who like fresh fish
Probably one of the cleanest place I been to in Miami.
Waste of Money!
I took my wife here this past weekend since she is a seafood enthusiast and I have to say the food was awful and the service was just as terrible. I myself am not a huge fan of seafood but I dont mind trying a good fish sandwich, or at least watching my wife enjoy herself. In which she did not. The Fish on my sandwich had no flavor and it was heavily breaded. This food is for those that have never eaten a good seafood meal. I have to say so far Miami has been disappointing me on their seafood dishes. I have to come to find that spending a lot of money on meals in this city does not mean you are going to have a good meal. Just prepare yourself for the ambiance. Which I have to say this place had none, it was bland just like the food. I would suggest to save your money and not go, the food is awful, may have been good during another time however now that time has passed.
Best place in town for fresh fish and seafood. I love the crab salad! Wouldn't go anywhere else!
If I could leave no stars I would It sucks he has people that don t believe in speaking with from Haiti restaurant dirty hands to serving you your food he brings you fried food that saturated in oil and soggy and he s the one with an attitude god please Close it down Bring my daughter Raw Chicken tenders
The food was awesome the service was great. We will eat there again next time we are in town
Have eaten at Captain Jim's several times in the past two years. We love their shrimp and grits. If you are not a grit lover you would love their grits. I would normally say that. This time I had their conch fritters , which were very tasty and great. However, the shrimp and grits were not the same. Though the shrimps were good the grits were lumpy. It may have been because we were there around 9 pm or later and close at 10. They might have run out of grits. I will give them that benefit of the doubt. Our guests had cracked conch which were great. I will give the shrimp and grits another try at a more reasonable time of day and update this review. Just because I was disappointed with the grits, which used to be the best that I ever had and I am not a grit lover is not a reflection on the rest of the menu. Usally great seafood in a casual setting. Give the place a try.
The staff is very friendly, the prices are good, and the fish is amazingly fresh.
Really good menu with delicious eats. "Captain's tail" is the way to go
Food was excellent! Hidden gem of Florida! Service was great!
Was in miami decided to go seafood
This place is AMAZING ....THE KONCH FRITTERS THE MAUI WITH LEMON SAUCE IN CAPERS ..O GOSH MY MOUTH WAS YELLING DON'T STOP ..WOULD DEF EAT THERE AGIAN ... WISH THEY WERE CLOSER TO HOME ....IN THE OUR WAITRESS BARBARA WAS SUPER FANTASTIC AS WELL ...ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE MUSIC WAS PERFECT .....
Nothing to do with the restaurant you visited 3 years ago, better presence, worse food
Some of the best seafood by far for my visit today I had fried clams delicious
I originally gave captain Jim s 1 star and am writing to update my review since new management took effect. I went on a Sunday and had the crab cake Benedict, conch empanadas and fish dip. One word: WOW! The food was exquisite! The waitresses were wonderful, the chef came out to greet us and ask if our food was up to par- and it definitely was. And the new restaurant renovations came out lovely. I cannot recommend the new Captain Jim s enough. Absolutely delicious.
great casual seafood restaurant in north miami, also a fresh seafood market. i really like the raw oysters and lobster here
