It's really hard to express my gratitude to this institute, for the seemingly unimaginable ways it's helped me grow as an individual.

IIT Kanpur fundamentally stands for freedom, which is expressed in the ability of students to choose subjects that excites them, indulge in activities which interests them and find resonance amongst like minded individuals. The academic and co-curricular infrastructure caters from the mundane to the paranormal, and I can assert with confidence that any number of years won't suffice to absorb everything that this place has to offer.

Set in lush greenery and an architectural style which conflates the old pillars of education to the modern world, this place is a visual delight.

The food options are also plentiful with the OAT food court and CCD in the academic area if you get bored of the numerous canteens.

Pro-tip: If you do get an opportunity to visit this place, make sure you visit the iconic P. K. Kelkar library.

Great place to live, learn an visit. The gardens are a small paradise, people are nice and the faculties and institutes inside are great. If you are a foreigner don't trust the local water filter if you don't want to spend your next week on the toilet :-)

IIT Kanpur was established by an act of Parliament in 1959. The institute was started in December 1959 in a room in the Canteen Building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur. In 1963, the Institute moved to its present location, on the historic Grand Trunk Road near the village of Kalyanpur in Kanpur district. During the first ten years of its existence, IIT Kanpur benefited from the Kanpur Indo-American Programme, where a consortium of 9 US universities namely M.I.T, University of California Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Case Institute Of Technology and Purdue University helped set up the research laboratories and academic programmes. The first Director of the Institute was Dr. P. K. Kelkar (after whom the Central Library was renamed in 2003).
