Cannot say enough wonderful things about this family and the business that they run. Extremely knowledgable and very well respected in the saddleseat industry. Their expertise is second to none and their reputation is outstanding. Both of our daughters ride here and we board our one horse here as well. The care they give to the horses is top notch and the instruction the girls receive is outstanding.
I highly recommend you come and see Huntoon Stables for yourself if you are considering an equine sport for yourself or your child.

I really love Huntoon. I've been taking riding classes there for the past 3 or 4 years, and it's really amazing. The classes are great experiences, and everyone at the stables are really nice. It's a great place to learn to ride.

I attended the Waubonsee horsemanship class at this stable.
This is a small, family run barn and the people who run it are absolutely wonderful.
This barn teaches saddle seat - which is an offshoot of English but there are some differences. Its akin to driving a stick or automatic when you're used to the other kind of transmission. If you're used to traditional english, there will be a bit of adjusting. Hand position is different (higher) but there's some concepts that carry over to any discipline. (and frankly the saddles are the most comfortable saddle I've ever put my butt in). One of the cool things about saddle seat- is if you are looking for a discipline of riding that does not involve jumping- this is one of them. They also teach cart (hack?) driving.
I really enjoyed the class I took here- as it gave me a LOT more confidence in my private traditional english lessons- because since as part of the class, they taught me how to tack up, and the horse's tack I got involved a martingale and two sets of reins- in comparison regular english tack is super easy. The horse I got was also more peppy than any lesson horse i'd ever ridden so he and the class also helped me feel less nervous around horses that were "warmer" than I'm used to.
Many of their horses are rescues too. Which I found really neat.
They have a fall festival event too, where they have hand led horse rides and my kids even got to ride the horse I rode in class, which I found super neat because I'd tell them about "Nate the Great" and what we did when i got home after class.
Once my schedule opens up, i'll probably pick up the following horsemanship classes, (2 and 3) but with nursing school- it'll have to wait.
Also, it was wonderful to get my "kitty" fix- I know this sounds funny and why would I put this in a rating, but the barn cats are also super super friendly and interested in anyone who shows up and will solicit pets and attention if you're waiting before a class.

My daughter took lessons here through high school and college. They helped to make her the confident, successful woman she is. When she eventually moved away for her career and I stopped stopping by I felt like I lost the Huntoons as loving family members. Riding lessons aren't free but they are WAY cheaper than paying to fix your child who has strayed from the straight and narrow. Send them there to learn discipline and respect.
