Pros:The room was comparable size to other boutique hotels in the area. Decor & fixtures were posh, modern and clean. Cons:No parking, and the only ice machine was on the first floor "around the corner from the elevator"

Avoid this hotel!! There's drunken tramps sleeping on the ground outside. Rubbish views of the building wall next door, over priced snacks in the room...$5 for m&m's!! DEFINITELY NOT A 4* its really tired looking and theres a horrible musty smell throughout. Staff are very unhelpful, the woman on reception when we checked in had a bad attitude. The rooms have lights on sensors so if you need to go to the bathroom in the night you'll wake the whole room up! The bedding is cheap and nasty. Its thin and itchy amd sticks to your skin. There's no A.C. and you cant even put the ceiling fan on because its sounds like its about to fall off and hit you. Don't bother trying to sleep in because the maids start hoovering outside your room at 8am!! Won't be recommending this hotel to anyone!! Oh and its also in a smelly part of the neighbourhood....some people obviously like to pee in the streets! ie tramps!!

Reasonably priced, vintage charm in the bedroom, sparkling modernity in the bathroom. The lobby makes a strong first impression, bright and airy, and the rooms live up to it. No breakfast, but San Francisco is hardly lacking for coffee shops. I was happy with my choice.

Correct and nice hotel. It is well located. The staff is friendly and helps you in whatever you need. The only discomfort occurred with check out since the hiring of the nights we had done since booking and we were a good time until we showed that the fees and taxes were paid because they did not know how to check.

We stayed here for one night. The room and bathroom were very good, spacious and clean.
Warm welcome by Sam and Joan.
The luggage service is very convenient, we left our bags there before we got the room and when we returned it. We were able to enjoy the city hands free.

Stayed at Hotel Vertigo for my first time in San Francisco, and had an excellent experience. The hotel is clean and modern, yet pays homage to the history of the building and neighborhood. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend.

The hotel is located in the center, so that everything was well reached. Cable car on Market Street for example. The hotel is clean, the staff very friendly and the room purpose moderately. I felt comfortable.

Very nice hotel, we spent 3 pleasant nights, quiet and were able to rest from our long days of walking in San Francisco. The staff is nice and smiling and it is a very good point because it is far from being a generality in the United States! The decoration is neat and beautiful. In short, everything we expected. I recommend.

Located in a convenient area to visit Frisco without using public transport.
The neighborhood is close to some structures to help the homeless, which you will find everywhere in the city, frankly nobody has ever bothered us in the past 3 days.
Hotel is clean and theme of the famous Hitchcock film, has a small coffee break at the entrance.
Fast check-in desk and friendly, smiling young people.
Basic rooms, consistent price in August.
Fair cleaning, good sleep quality.

A great compact boutique hotel. Good location for Union Square and Market Street. A cab to the Harbourside is only $13. Rooms are not the largest but are very well appointed and the bed is comfortable. Hotel has ATM, vending machine, fitness suite, ice, etc. Staff are very friendly. Plenty of bars, convenience stores and eateries in the vicinity. A recommended place to stay.

So we decided to stay at a cute boutique hotel that has an Alfred Hitchcock connection? Ever heard of or watched the suspenseful movie, "Vertigo" which was filmed in 1958 with actor James Stewart (aka as George Bailey from the infamous movie" It's A Wonderful Life.")? Well, Hotel Vertigo made a cameo in the movie and it is notorious to many tourists from around the world. I absolutely love the bold orange decor throughout this unique and antique boutique hotel...

In one of my photos, you will see me with Fernando (Manager at Hotel Vertigo aka The Jolly Rancher Man), and Christina. Fernando greeted us instantaneously with superb customer service and resources. He also accommodated my fix of Watermelon Jolly Ranchers. I highly recommend a stay at Hotel Vertigo as it's centrally located in the Nob Hill neighborhood. I will be staying here once again when I return to Frisco!

A very big Thank You to the Hotel Vertigo Team!

We stayed there with their 2 Queen beds room for a week (Christmas holidays), the room is spacious even for 4 adults. The staff are all very friendly and I like the morning reception staff, that gentlemen really has a singing voice. Two corner stores at either end of the Hotel, there are also two Pizza places and a breakfast place nearby. Walking distance to Union square and if you are a walking person, Chinatown and Japantown are walkable.

The Hotel is a bit old but place is clean and I will stay there again if I visit SFO again. By the way, don't venture south of this hotel, you won't like it. North is pretty good, I think the area is called Noob Hill. There are some good restaurant there. Overall, this is a good place to stay.

Very old and dirty hotel. The cleaners are noisy from early morning, but they do not get a skid at hand. The lamps in the room do not work. It does not make the TV signal either. The bed is stone hard. The shelves in the bathroom are falling down. The price is everything, too high for what the mom gets for the money!

Very nice and elegant Hotel.... This Hotel has alot of history... Built in 1906...The movie "Vertigo" (1958) by the famous Alfred Hitchcock was filmed here... "Fernando & Sam had outstanding customer service" and we obtained this knowledge about this Hotel from the very informative Mr. Fernando

Hotel clean, nice and well located but no air conditioning and noisy heating with a single button on / off without thermostat. Too bad because it was cold in the room, the bay window in old single glazed and the floor was icy as much as the carpet tiles in the bathroom

It was a very clean, value for money hotel for San Francisco. You simply cannot expect cheap there. The location was quite central. The most important places (Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, etc.) were within walking distance.
The Vertigo has a certain flair, which is partly due to its age, but also because it "celebrates" its history.
A laundromat is practically next door.

The hotel interior and the room is decorated in a modern luxe way. That being said, the staff doesn't greet you unless spoken to and there is only one elevator in the building. It is 1920's slow. No matter which of the 8 floors your room is on, if you take the stairs, you'll probably make it up to your floor before it gets down to the lobby and back up. With regard to the room, while it was nicely decorated, it gave the impression of lipstick on a pig. The floors sloped and creaked, the drapes, walls and headboard all had stains or set in dirt. The AC unit didn't work and seemed to be from the 1970's. I was able to open the windows completely which let air in but also a straight plunge down to the interior courtyard. This concerned me as any curious kids could hurt themselves as the windows were less than 3 feet from the ground and they placed the chairs and desk by them. The bathroom was nice with its faux alligator floors and tub tiles, except for the long blonde hair I found on a hand towel. Overall, the hotel did what I needed which was provide a place to rest at night, but otherwise it seemed overpriced for all the little flaws.

Nice room and great location! Clean and comfortable. Plenty of space in the room for two people. Bed size is not a king but apparently nowadays all hotels pretend to have king while they haven't (I have a king at home, I perfectly know how it feels). Rooms should be more isolated, but overall is not a big deal. I definitely recommend it.

This was a lovely boutique hotel. If you're a fan of the movie Vertigo it's will be right up your alley. The location is on the edge of the trendy districts so the area around it is a little rougher but not a big issue. There's a cute breakfast place across the street and it's easy walking distance of public transit. It doesn't have the amenities like a pool that you might want if you're taking your kids but was the perfect place for my husband and I to celebrate our anniversary. The lack of air conditioning was no issue at all because of the mild climate, breezes through the window and excellent ceiling fans. Would stay again if back in the San Fran area.

Clean and tidy rooms, the "designer style" of the entire hotel does not have to suit everyone, overall, everything looks a bit dated.
Affordable for San Francisco, good central location, a cable car station is blocks away. Supermarket and cafes can be found in the immediate vicinity.

The price to stay here is very high for what it is. Luckily work paid for it. It is nice and in a good location but there isnt really anything that sets it apart from much cheaper places. If you can find a good deal book otherwise i would try to find something cheaper or fancier for the same price

The hotel was clean and on a good location, staff was nice.the room was a decent size, clean and with nice fixtures. The bed was NOT a queen. It was tiny, seemed smaller than a full/double, but I'm guessing that's what it was. I'm 5'10" and my feet were hanging off the end of the bed. It was also extremely hard. A new mattress and this place would easily be worth going back to.

Everything was as it should be. Helpful service, clean rooms, amazing decor, worth the price! I cannot describe how many times they help us find places to eat, call a cab so we wouldn't be late. They held our luggage for us while me and my friend explored one last time. I had a great experience and will return someday!

I read through lots of reviews and perhaps those with low ratings had an off experience or are used to ritzy hotels, but I find this place to be super cute (orange is my fav color -- see my water bottle?!), well located, and comfy. I'm a grad student and educator, so finding this with a discount was nice. The room is big and just an overall nice space. Fridge is a great addition too.

Folks at the front are really nice. Cafes and food spots on every block nearby and a nice stroll to Union Square. I'll update if anything bad happens (hehe), but I hope to be back!
